Previous Thread: >>2348885

Bring us your roughs, your storyboards, your pencil tests etc. Talk about industry, schools, the hopelessness of it all, how we all gonna make it etc.

If you're gonna post animation that isn't yours give source or state that it isn't yours.

Keep shitposting to a minimum. Don't feed the trolls.

What kind of computers do you guys have/recommend? I'm getting a new one specifically for animation and I'm not sure what to get.

Are all-in-ones ok? I don't have much space for a tower with my current setup
>>
I don't think you need anything specific except if you plan to do 3D.
>>
>>2378863
2d stuff doesn't really require a lot of power, RAM is probably the most important, you should probably have at least 8GB. I use an old mac pro and it runs everything fine.

If we're talking 3D then you need to start worrying about power.

I have a question for everyone

For school, what's a good portfolio? I'm going for animation but was told my portfolio doesn't have to be entirely related to that since I'm going there to learn it and don't have much basis in it yet myself. Lots of read-knowledge, nothing applied and I only have eight days to get this together.

Would character designs be acceptable if they're polished? Character turn arounds? Should I make some sequential art to show what understanding I do have of it now?

Or should it be all studies, still lifes, figure drawings?

Right now i currently have a painting I did, a digital portrait in my style rather than realism, and a bunch of gesture and figure drawings to work with.

I haven't been drawing for a few years because of depression but I finally shook out of that funk and decided to start fresh by going to school and take classes since obviously learning all on my own hasn't been working out.

But I'm kind of at a loss of what to add. The guidelines I've been given are "between 5-10 pieces" and was told by the counselor that it could be a range of mediums.

Which is why I'm having trouble. With such a large amount of options I don't know what to do.

there are plenty of artists who don't need pic related, and have been developing their application portfolio for months.

you are fucked, just give up. the world does not need an abundance of artists, and the amount of money you invest in art school will be better off flushed down the toilet. if you cannot muster up the drive and passion to study on your own, who says classes will help?

just trying to be honest with you.

Does anyone know if there are any good books or videos covering how to rig a decent character in Toonboom? Everything I can find either isn't in depth enough, or leans to much on the digital side with the characters coming out like something from Johnny Test or Total Drama Island. It seems that nothing really covers a good mix of combining traditional and digital elements to make character rigs like those in Gumball and Wonder Over Yonder.

Also not fucked :) I have most of the pieces done already but the last few I wasn't sure about.

That's the exact same problem i've had finding tutorials for it (and one that covered multi angles/drawing swaps, there were no tutorials), so i've had to figure it all out over the past 2 months. But now that i know how to it's super simple to make, i'm thinking of just doing some tutorials because there's nothing on youtubet o do 3/4 of the stuff in this rig alone.

If it helps, you should look at Sheridan's animation portfolio requirements. Its requirements got a mix of life drawing, character turnarounds, environments, and storyboarding, and probably more which I can't remember.
Also:

More in-depth descriptions and suggestions from Sheridan students on how to approach the Sheridan portfolio, and potentially any other school's portfolio.

But yeah, the school you're looking at may have different requirements and preferences so try to google and see if you can find accepted students' applications and works.

Those are decent for building simple characters that face one direction, he also shows off a few neat tricks with rigging the mouth and eyes, but when it comes to the more complex things, say having the character face different views but keeping the movement consistent in the various parts while changing the view, he only lightly touches on it and doesn't tell you how to rig it that way. I'm going through the official toonboom videos again to see if they are any good. I remember them being pretty mediocre, but maybe I'll pick up on something new.

>>

You can buy its a pile of garbage and movie clips dont play if you do native export. Newgrounds made an app just for that reason to convert swf to video called Swivel:
https://www.newgrounds.com/wiki/creator-resources/flash-resources/swivel
>>
>>2380289
Yep his tutorals are really good, but they worked with only one angle (well two with the back view, but it was more of like a z-shift flip than a complete turn).

Also if you look at his other tutorials with the bunny he talks about how he only uses pencil now and how he was using brush in the old tutorials and how you don't really wanna use brush for rig building (hes completely right about that too, i started out only using brush as well before i realized why you use pencil).
>>
>>2380289
About this guy, he says something about pressing the play button can crash computers because it renders everything as it plays. Is that true? If I get toonboom would I have to scrub through the timeline like he does?
>>
>>2381220
Hes using a 4 year old version of harmony, i've been using 12 and it hasn't really crashed during a render (however, you should have autosave on or save a lot regardless).

The play render button renders the actual frames and plays it like it would a final composition, normally you just scrub through timeline like you would in flash or use < > keys to scrub through every frame.

Is it better to animate straight on, or to plan out the keys first and use that as like a guide when you're working?
>>
>>2382722
for "unpredictable", "physical" stuff like fire, it's best to animate forwards. (What would the keyframes of fire even look like? they would have no resemblance to eachother, so it wouldn't help you in any way)

For most other stuff it's usually considered better to keyframe/block it first, although there are some people who just animate body motion forwards and such as well, I think

If you look on the left in the image here, you can see the keyframes of a walk cycle. The finished cycle is gonna be 13 frames, but he starts out with the two most important ones - the beginning and the end. Then he gets the middle frame (because it's not just a straight motion), and then the ones in between the middle and the beginning and end. At this point, he's basically made his walk cycle, it's just a bit choppy - he has all the frames that define the motion and he can tell his trained monkey inbetweener to fill out the blanks.

Lessening the distance between the highest and lowest frame can make the dog look calmer, as there's less motion. Maybe that's more the idleness you're looking for? Hope it helps!

No where in the OP description does it say, "Here is a free program", it only has links with general descriptions like "Stuff you might find useful". Unless you expect people to enter every link they read in a description just in case there might be a pirated program attached.

Ehh i guess? If you're coming from flash or know animation in general it's not radically diffierent. The changes are you have to think of each layer as a technical symbol, and that each one has overlayer/line/color/underlayer, and to use pegs instead of animating on the drawing.

Is copying (not tracing) other animations a good way to improve your sense of timing, weight, etc?
>>
What animated movies are recommended for inspiration and studying?
>>
>>2388616
it's a good way to study how the animator approached timing, spacing, etc, as long as you're thinking about that stuff actively and not just blindly copying. like think why did they make this part on 3s rather than 2s, why did the hips move so much horizontally from this frame to the next, stuff like that. make sure you study real life as well though

>>2388723
I mean it depends what you like so it's subjective. I'm mostly into western stuff so I can't give Japanese recs beyond what I've seen (not that much). In terms of animation quality check out:

3d:
Tangled (exaggerated animation that still feels really believable, especially pay attention to how characters use very few poses but those poses are strong and communicate ideas effectively)
Wreck-it Ralph (a lot of creativity and skill in blending the different styles of the characters)
HTTYD2 (good acting and very well animated fighting / midair stuff)

2d:
The Illusionist (genuinely animated realism at the highest level)
Aladdin (for exagerrated animation that doesn't go into looney tunes territory)
Prince of Egypt (less exaggerated but a smoother style - the acting is really good especially)
Only Yesterday (slice of life/regular stuff that's animated really well, since I feel well animated action is easy to find in Japan anyway)
>>

>>

The original was just a normal animation with color and all. I made this one to try to understand how the animator timed it. Didn't really feel like drawing it all out since that wasn't what I was focusing on.
>>
>>2389175
I'm not sure what that nip is saying, but if you want to animate a life-like character, just rotating the head to the side like that is going to look like you'rre just screwing the head off of a mannequin.

Try adding this to your in-betweens to make her more lifelike:
Tilt her head slightly down on the way around.
Have her blink as she turns her head.
>>

>where is it located/are you working from home?
In SEA. More and more works are being outsourced to here because there's not enough animator in Japan.

>and hows the pay?
I don't know about the pay since I haven't started working yet. Just planned to apply for the job.
I heard it wasn't good tho, just as one would expect from an entry position in an industry known for treating their workers like slaves.

But hey, I guess it's not as bad as being an inbetweener in Japan because it's not expensive to live here.
Once I have enough skill and experience to become a key animator, I'm moving to Japan.

>Just curious but are you the guy who made the thread about wanting to move to Japan to be an animator?
No, I never made a thread here.

>Why do you want to work in Japan or Korea if you know it's pretty much slave labor?
Where else can you really work as a serious 2D animator?
2D animation in France seems sporadic and the US is full of Flash/Toonboom tween cartoon.

>Are you trying to learn the language?
I know basic Japanese but not enough to communicate IRL.
I hope to be proficient enough to work there 3 years.

>How are you preparing for the move?
I'm not really preparing anything, aside from learning the language.
Getting a working permit will be tough but I'll have to try my best.
I have a bachelor's degree but it's not animation-related so it might not help...

Yeah! I noticed that after I finished it and felt like I really need to do a lot more drawings with this character turning his head to actually figure out the way I should do his hair. Right here, I was kind of going based on just a front view - side view which I now realize don't make sense when transitioning.

>>2388429
Good! Outside of the main three, quite a few characters have been scrapped or re-written. It's mostly something I've been developing on the side as stress-relief and since I have full-time work now, I don't have tons of time to work on it. But I figure it's good to have three or four developed pitches in your sack if you plan to get around in animation industry, in the chance you get an opportunity to pitch to someone.

Anyone who wants to move to Japan just to animate is literally a fucking moron or possibly a masochist. 2D animation work is practically dead in America but at least you can just translate those skills to other departments, like storyboarding or character design. Much better to just switch departments than be a slave.
>>
>>2392414
You should see how the average animation "rough sketch". Should give you an idea how much you'll need to learn before animating.
>>
>>2393196
Not everyone here is an American, friend.
For me, moving to Japan is easier than trying to get an animation job in the States.
>>
>>2393288
>For me, moving to Japan is easier than trying to get an animation job in the States.
That's my point. I find it better to have to switch over to storyboarding and not have an animation job and get paid somewhat well than to animate in Japan and get paid shit. Sure you're animating which is your passion or whatever, but there's a limit. If you're unable to live while satisfying your passion, you gotta make compromises.
>>
>>2393311
By an animation job I mean any animation-related job in general, storyboarding included.
Hell, I probably can't get any job in America at all, let alone animation.

And if you're skilled enough to be a storyboard or character artist in America, chances you will be paid well enough to live comfortably in Japan anyway.
It's the young inexperienced inbetweeners who can't draw fast enough that are suffering from the low pay.
>>

>>
>>2394816
Probably getting that animation done, depending on how long it is. If you haven't completed a full animation with story you'll soon find out how really time consuming it is. Anything you might not have practiced will take a while to have it read properly and get the timing to work well for the audience. Also make sure to save often.

You've never done an animation before so I'd suggest doing several small ones before attempting a big one. You'll learn more, get better faster and it won't be disheartening when you're months in with little done.

Is character design not included in "animation as a whole"? I though animation as a whole meant everything: animation, design, the atmosphere, the sound etc.
