Thread for the beginners

Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises. Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up.

Do not forget to PLEASE RESIZE and crop your images before uploading them. 1kpx is fine.

→ → → → Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," Read the f*cking sticky, it's there for a reason: >>1579290 → → → → →

Questions go in the QUESTION THREAD
This is for posting studies & getting critique.

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're a baddie.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless. (hint: post a cute anime girl if you would like replies)

Respect those giving you advice and if you s*ck know that you'll never make it™.

"Keys to Drawing" is pretty good for me. I tried Loomis, tried DotRSoB, but only in drawabox, video tutorials of Proko and that chink guy and that book I saw no bullshit.

I'm so tired of people misunderstanding what symbol drawing is

It's not just you not drawing what you see but what you think you see, it's also thinking of certain parts of a drawing as separate elements. People that symbol make the mistake of drawing a thick outline for their eyes, lips and noses for example. Even a photocopied eye can look symbol-drawn when you modify the edges a little.

>>
>>2365751
Looking good so far. I like the face especially.

Some discrepancies I noticed are the size of the boobs. You made yours much larger. Not a big deal though.

What's more concerning is the muscle connecting the model's right arm to the chest. It looks a little too prominent.
>>
>>2365777

You don't draw what you see. She is bend a lot more and leans more to the left. She's a lot thinner, on your drawing one can't even see the ribs and anyway, proportions are fucked so she looks more stout than she is in reality.

Neck should be tense and to the front, in your position she looks relaxed. Also some minor details like angle hands made is a bit too big.

IMO biggest problem - main line of the gesture drawing going from thigh, on the contour of the buttcheek and whole spine. This line is fucked and kills the drawing.

This line places her leg too high (on the photo there's nearly straight, flat line going from the place where buttcheek is squeezed on the surface), make her lean backwards and generally fucks up posture.

Last but not least, head isn't tilted as it should be. See the neck lines.

tl;dr Draw it again, this time take 40 minutes instead of 20.
>>
>>2365751

Again as in >>2365812 - you draw her too relaxed. She is tense. She leans forward pushing her chest and at the same time makes extreme bend pushing her ass to the back. She also tenses her neck, it is tilted and pushed forward as much as she can.

Also again, you made her a bitter too big, but maybe it's your interpretation.

You are a bit better than that guy >>2365812 since you noticed that flat line where the buttcheek meets surface. Again though, it's on the wrong angle and there's too sharp change of the line out of the box. Line should be smooth and pushed a lot further into the leg and further down.

May be that the values are too uniform?

Some advice I would give is to make the tall grass more like large masses of the grass versus individually rendered ones, as the human mind will do most of the work for you.

Also, I think you rendered the clouds too much, and they distract from the mountains, which are pretty nice by the way.

Last thing I can think of is to make the first portion of the beach the foreground, and the rear part in the midground with the ocean. Also, with the foreground beach blocking that little part in between the two.

Just to sum it up, don't worry about the little portions, and focus your efforts on the center of focus (the mountains in this case), also maybe brighten the mountains so they draw the eye better.

If you're interested, search up F. E. Church, I think you can pick up some valuable ideas from him.

Keep on working at it man, you're on your way.

She is much skinnier in the photo

I think one of the problems that /ic/ has is that they rely too much on what they know about the human form and don't concentrate on reproducing the photo.
That's how you expand your knowlege about form and lighting. I think reproducing a photo is much harder than "interpreting" and stylizing it.

You learn a lot more from it as well. There is merit to recording exactly what you see

One of the most stupid, most offensive things I read on this board is people criticizing others as "human photocopy machines"

It obviously comes from people who don't know shit about art and, worringly, need to spread that ignorance around.

Don't fall for the meme

How the hell do you draw things in relation to each other? I'm having an especially hard time with faces. I feel like I can draw each facial landmark well enough (an eye, the nose, the mouth), but drawing them in relation is fucking impossible. Feels like a 15 puzzle, balancing relative size and location. How do you guys do it? I'm trying now to draw primitive shapes in place of the landmarks and position/scale THOSE before moving into detail, but even that's proving difficult.

Nobody said it was easy. That's how you do it in general, you use simple shapes first and try to construct it before adding detail. Learn some general ratios of the positions and adjust those.

Mainly, do a lot of life drawing, you just have to get alot of experience and it will make it easier. You will start to instinctively know where to put things and where stuff is out of place.

Me again, currently trying to draw from a ref, lots of drawing what I see, overlaying reference, and then tracing the ref to fix what I fucked up. Super frustrating, don't really feel like I'm doing anything difficult, but maybe it'll help me learn?

Anyway, now that I've basically traced the image, why doesn't his facial expression match the reference? I really can't pinpoint any differences. I'm probably not looking close enough.

Study the shapes of how the body works. And then look closer. Separate it to individual parts if you must. Then look at how they connect, bone structures etc. This is a fundamental you need to know if you're going to do anything to do with any humanoid structure. And there isn't one thing that's a priority. Eventually you should learn it all and more knowledge is better then no knowledge.

A lot of people suggest to turn figures upside down when you're a beginner to train yourself to draw with your eyes and get proper values and such. However, let's say one was drawing something like an orange and had a hard time getting the values and testure down. Would inverting the colors generally provide a similar effect to flipping a picture of a person upside down?
>>
>>2367093
Probably not? It's more likely to make what you're learning useless. I don't think many people struggle with "symbol coloring".

Drawing is great because I can do it anywhere, it doesn't make noise and I really like doing it, even if it doesn't get me laid.

>>
>>2367479

An hour isn't very long for a 'serious draw'

It also depends on what you're trying to improve. Doing lots of sketches will familiarize you with a subject faster than doing one carefully rendered piece, but if you want to learn how to carefully render then obviously doing a lot of sketchy drawings will only get you so far.
>>
>>2367479

Is this bait?

Two hours a day every day would be hobbyist tier, an hour 3 times a week is fucking nothing. Sitting down for less than an hour isn't even a warm up. This isn't try hard bullshit either, this is just straight up how it is.

If you want real improvement you should be practicing and studying for several hours every day. Ideally you would be drawing every day for 6-8 hours. Maybe more if you could manage it.

If you can manage to draw 4 hours a day at least, that would be decent, but what you've got there isn't going to get you anywhere.
>>
>>2367515

What exactly do you classify as 'real improvement'? Can you provide examples?

You need to put in a ridiculous number of hours to get good enough to make it. If you aren't putting in the time of a full time job, you're falling behind your peers, and you're not going to be able to find work. Feel free to treat it as a hobby, but if you're asking how to improve the answer is always going to be "a fucking lot of drawing"
>>
>>2367479
Who's that semen demon? Also, you should be drawing more than 3 hours a week.
>>
>>2367479
10000/3 = 3333
3333/52 = 64 years

It will take you roughly 64 years to git gud

If you however pull 55 hour weeks like you need to

10000/55 = 182
182/52 = 3.5 years

That's how you improve mato

Typically they'll tell you that you should be filling a sketchbook a month. They'll say you don't have to if you're working professionally, because then you're already drawing enough.

It's about a lot more factors than "hurr draw over 9000 hours every day." That said, someone with a desire to be a professional should definitely be drawing every day. But there's a point where you stop really learning all that much, and it's around 4 hours. Past that, you're giving yourself mileage, which is important, sure.

TL;DR: Draw every day, fill a sketchbook every month, self-criticize and evaluate what you've drawn. Continue with this for some years and you will be good.

Hey faggot, you're a faggot.

I'm a professional. I worked professionally as a freelancer and in a studio as a concept artist. If you aren't painting at least 40 hours a week you are never going to improve fast. Your work just won't be good enough.

But keep posting anime meme pictures and complain about shiposters (hypocrisy).

Or save everyone the trouble and kill yourself.
>>
>>2367912
you don't even need sketchbooks. I haven't drawn in a sketchbook since 2009. I used a wacom graphire 4x5 for 10 years. Even my first studio job I brought in my own graphire because I don't like the bigger intuos tablets.

But then they got me a cintiq in 2011 and spoiled me forever. I bought a yiynova msp19ru which is pretty amazing for the money.

Sketchbooks are overrated is what I'm trying to say.

as someone who's putting in 5 hours a day minimum erryday at the moment (moving up to 6 next month, then 7 then 8), the improvement you see is in the understanding of fundamentals mostly in the beginning. e.g. i've been spending the past 2 months focusing on the human figure, trying to work out anatomy and construction, so those are the things i've seen improvement in. check out the progress thread if you want examples.

Hi guys, I'm new to this board and I'm tired of my drawing problems.
I draw since I'm 3 but I never really had teachings.

My problems are:
-My perspective is pretty bad, so my landscapes, vehicles and other stuff are bad
-I can't draw materials properly (wood, metal etc...)
and the worst one:

It seems that I can ONLY DRAW by imagination.
I'm shit at copying a tree and drawing it etc...
I tried but I'm never satisfied with the result and I hate copying stuffs. I only like to create characters and monsters, and yet, I know I have to draw real things to improve at doing so.
What should I do ?

I think I'm pretty good at proportions, my problems revolves onto the fact that I can't shadow things realisticly for shit, and it makes my drawings either too 2D or too graphic.

I'll upload drawings when I can, don't hesitate to shit on my drawings I really need help.

the mandibular is too far back is what i'm saying and the reason your mandible are too far back is because your basic construction, the circle and cross, is wrong on most of your heads (last one is fine)
make your vertical straight at the bottom
>>
>>2368544
Ah, ok! Thanks
>>
>>2368156

1. it doesn't take too much skill to draw from reference, and theres quite a few mistakes, e.g in the right eye being diagonal and looking lie a front facing eye, shading on the bags of the eyes aren't showing volume, the nose doesn't seem all that 3 dimensional, there are lines above the left eye that get confused for the brow line, side profile part of the face looks really flat. also the beard could be hiding inaccuracies in the construction. it's all just general facial construction that you pick up from doing a lot of portraits

overall it's a good study, but 2 hours seems like way too much for someone who understands facial structure. if you keep doing portraits like these, your speed will quickly improve an't it might take 15-30 minutes to do something like this with shading. then it's the problem of doing faces from your imagination, which really demonstrates that you fully understand what you're drawing

First time trying oil painting. I have a long way to go, but since it's my first time I guess it's okay?

Did another one
I noticed I change too much the tonalization of the colors, but I preferred to keep it like that because it looks more chaotic
Not as expected, but I think it's better than the last one

I'm trying to redeem myself a little. I know the proportions are a little better, but my lines are still sketchy as hell.

>>2368873
you have almost the form, but your lines suck

Have you considered doing actual studies instead of constantly posting these doodles?

So, I tried doing the study, and I can tell some value, color and structure is off, but does it look okay?

very decent for a beginner thread
>>

You need contrast in your paintings to give a sense of depth. With the colours and values placed haphazardly, the image becomes flat, there is no logic to it. Work on using colour and value to create a sense of distance in your ocean. Try doing a study of an actual ocean, observe how colour and light affects the scene in terms of describing changes in distance.

I just started drawing. I drew my hand because it was a exercise in the book I'm reading. What's wrong with it and how can I improve?
>>
>>2369090

keep reading the book and keep drawing hands

it's flat. you need a sense of form
>>
>>2369090

Is it the Keys to Drawing hand exercise? Don't worry about getting it perfect, the exercise is just meant to build your observational skills. If you wanted to improve it you would have to study value, construction, hand anatomy, you would need to draw more accurately, more patiently, cleaner, etc. Hands are pretty tough. Try doing the exercise a few more times, and move on to the next one.

You can always be more patient though, that's a tough thing to learn when you're just starting out. One thing, you really shouldn't scribble around on your picture like that. You're probably trying to apply value to it, but it doesn't really work like that, it's just another whole thing you're going to have to study on it's own to figure out the theory and application. Just try to keep your lines clean, draw slow and patient, and if you really want to add tone to your drawings, start practicing hatching.

sometimes, not very often, i do them in ballpoint pen and paper, but i don't post

Great, thanks for taking the time to give me feedback. For my next study I'll focus on being more accurate.

Can someone explain to me how to get this superimposing lines thing to work.

I cannot stop my hand from shaking off of the line.

I feel pretty hopeless right now.
>>
>>2369137

Good stuff man, keep it up
>>
>>2369284
Practice practice practice. Also don't move your wrist, only your arm.
>>
>>2369284

If you're shaking/wobbling you're going too slow. There's a specific speed and arm movement to it, not too fast, not too slow, you ghost over your line until you feel like you've got it lined up, then you just follow through in one quick, but not too quick stroke. You want it to be just fast enough so that the line is clean, but you don't lose control of the pen.
>>
>>2369284
If you're wobbling you aren't going sanic enough

If you're fraying you're going too sanic

Expect to do both for a long time
>>
>>2369284
Try tapping the two points with your pen, back and forth to get the muscle memory down until you feel confident enough to do it in one swift stroke.

Two hours. Didn't have time to fully render it again...

I'm not sure if I should be spending less time and doing more studies, or if it is actually helping to spend this much time on one.

really great work! i would work on the distinction of the jawline though. also the left hip seems a little wonky to me considering her legs are crossed (??)
