Just 2 more days then we're on to week #3? (Friday and Saturday submissions are both counted as week #2?)
>>2361694
We need a comment/critique function on the site asap. Theres so much potential for that place. I'm ready to ditch /ic/ for good and set up camp with lavaflake.
>>2361732
I'll make some extra lewd tomorrow to make up for it.
I still think that these therads should be a sticky, I mean it's the most dynamic thing on this board
>>2361737
I don't think dividing the community is a good idea. It's only been two weeks, let's not go ahead of ourselves.
I draw every day but never like one individual drawing, just keep working on the same piece until it's finished.
>>2361737
I'm not that crazy about a comment section, but it would be nice if we got a commendable blog/commentary section that you fill yourself. Like you know, a few words about the piece you drew, what was giving you trouble, what were you aiming for etc.
>>2361737
It was said last thread, "No", if you want critiques post in the goddamn drawthread, if you want to circlejerk go to deviantart.
>>2361756
Putting a description on each piece is different to letting people post comments on them, I can get behind letting the uploader append a short description on their pieces, if only to link to refs or whatever rather than having to stick them on the piece itself.
>>2361762
I agree totally, so far this shit works pretty well, some "big" changes would definitely ruin the whole tranquility that it now has.
You should be very careful about the expansion of the site.
also, gj
What this site needs is microtransactions. Where are my goddamn cosmetics Lavaflake?
We need Team Forza and 23:30 stickers and a whole heap of other shit I'm too tired to think of.
i spent the night reworking the site infrastructure so it's now caught up with web2.0 standards and it's possible to start implementing the good features. i also trimmed away 95% of the junk template files and restructured the file system which means I won't have to worry about growing pains in the future.
with that said, before I start implementing all the cool new features i need to get the report system up and running as well as the moderation tools to support it. for example anything to do with changing/updating submissions from behind the scenes involves manual changes in the database, saving the image file then resizing it in photoshop and FTPing it to the server. it's one of those things where spending a couple hours now to make these tools will save me hours every week.
>>2361737
>>2361762
It's been pretty back and forth on whether there should be comments and if there are then how they should be handled. same goes with being able to title/describe submissions. will the descriptions be informative or used to make excuses/another place to link to their patreon (please support my loomis studies)
>>2361767
Yeah changes will be slow regardless of what happens since it's a part time solo project. The main focus of the site will always be to encourage and reward participation. People want more and someday there will be more but it'll come slowly

I like this idea a lot. Even better if you can't see who left the comment. Identities and publicity are what creates drama and circlejerking, so with both of those aspects removed people would have no reason to comment unless they had something constructive to say, or genuinely like the piece enough to tell the artist.
>>2361989
comments in either case, anonymous or not, will create drama, especially if people start shitting on someone over and over again
it's pointless if we can talk in these threads about it instead
>>2361939
5 SCOOPS CMON WHATEVER IT TAKES
>>2361992
Good point, I didn't think of the possibility of one person shitposting on all of someone's submissions even without community encouragement. I guess if someone really wants critique, they can post their name here and just ask.
Why can't we just do critique... here? In this thread?
>>2362005
people are afraid of the mean hacker 4chinz, anonymous post let you be real/mean while names kinda make you nicer? i dont know.
>>2362005
that's what I was thinking, or the drawthread
>>2362005
there's already the other threads on the board for critiques. if it's going to be on ic then may as well use one of them
>>2362007
But the draw thread is slow.. These threads blaze by and we're all commonly motivated.
I think it wouldn't be bad to cultivate our own critique environment. As long as we can keep the circle jerking to a minimum, we can make this community even better than what we have right now.
>>2362008
But LAS is different

>>2362011
I think one type of critique that is possible with this as opposed to the draw thread is more of an "overall critique", since we are posting work we are doing everyday, it's easier to point out consistent mistakes as opposed something that went wrong with a singular image.
ups I missed a deadline, guess I'm out.
>>2361880

>>2362212
Isnt there a buffer for that? If you skip a day, you can upload two submissions the next day to make up for it
>>2362216
you still lose a token
>>2362220
Then again its hard to monitor if those messages are critique, could they be moderated somehow?
>>2362226
I don't get why not having a messaging system, public or otherwise, is such a bad thing. It's not like people can't talk shit or compliment people on these threads. If anything, having a name associated with you would get people to play nice
>>2362230
Then the whole of 4chan is not a good idea
>>2361786
Just make it so comments are only visible to the op. It'll discourage shitposting and improve the site.
2h until week 2 entry closes
>>2362270
It's usually not a good idea because it means there have to be people to moderate, and that brings in more human error, trust issues and other hassle which takes away from actually developing the site, I'd rather if users got the option to make their Email public on the profile page so if someone wants to contact them for whatever reason they can communicate that way.

Is anyone here proficient with gestures?
Can someone tell me what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong? I understand what a gesture should accomplish from Vilppu and Proko, simply capture the flow, mass and action of a pose, but I'm not sure if I'm actually getting better or worse and how to correct my strategic mindset to better improve the execution. Much more than "a-ha!" moments I find vast spaces of "what in the fuck am I even doing?"

Guys, is there any chance to become as good as a guy that goes to an artschool?
I mean with hard practice and all that has anyone made it on their own?
Please tell me it's possible.
>>2362747
yes dude its technically possible, that does NOT mean it will be easy. mark my words, you will become your worst enemy.
>>2362747
Yes, of course. Most artschools are a waste of time anyways.
>>2362747
I go to a foreign fine arts college and I've learned almost 90% by myself. First year really opened my eyes to composition and perception though
Most works are shit, most teachers are shit, most people are stuck in their comfort zone forever, some kids even in 5th year are still drawing their deviantart animu
Even then it's the best place to find people who can give you a honest, accurate, useful critique. Out of 50 teachers I think at least 3-4 can do so, and out of my 200 classmates there's about 5-10 that are extremely talented and -most important- very fruitful, always investigating and trying out new stuff. It's no surprise that after all these years they cut off from the rest. For some reason they have me in high regards too.
But anyways as I was saying, it's useful but you have to make it work, if you make the most out of it of course it'll be a thousand times more effective than doodling on your tablet hoping for a good critique on /ic/
The first and most important thing is that you have to learn to say 'I don't like this' and 'this is wrong' to your own drawings, if you achieve this you can be great by yourself, but a second opinion can do wonders
>>2362747
The only thing it's good for is forcing you to actually work instead of slacking off, and having experienced people nearby you can ask questions and get critique from. Otherwise my biggest regret in life was doing a useless creative degree.
Every resource you need to git good is available online and probably better than a school. As long as you actually make an active effort pursue art completely and properly then you're better off 'self-taught'. Fuck art school, wouldn't do it again even if it was free.
>>2362747
The thing some others might not mention is that artschool is good for networking. The few friends out of the dozens I know that graduated from artschools got jobs because their teachers hooked them up.
>>2362816
Networking is actually the only thing I don't need help with since I know everyone in those circles in my country.
But thanks.
You should probably remove the "Follow/Favorite Users" bullet from the task list, LavaFlake. Since you've implemented it already.
>>2362747
I went to artschool, I was lazy, my work doesn't stand out among LAS entries.
Disgustingly I was actually one of the better in my year though, because they don't teach drawing on most fine art courses, most people in my year can only make conceptual work.
Art school is just being NEET with a sense of direction and an excuse, it's still all on you to actually use it.
I need to be drawing but I'm depressed as fuck.
>>2362936
>not channeling your depression into beautiful art
cmon anon step it up
>>2362937
I'm trying. I think I'm better at channeling anger.
>>2362747
I'm in the same boat as this guy >>2362920 Have my BA and everything but my shit looks amateur. Art school doesn't teach you how to draw. The give you a year of the most basic of fundies and the rest is all frosting and courses on how to best follow prompts when you do get jobs.
You're better off taking that 4 years off and doing self study. It'll be cheaper too.
>>2362957
In my defense I was in no way part of that conversation.
>>2362937
>not channeling your hatred into your studies
Pleb tier advice, how do you expect to become a Sith lord of drawing with that attitude.
Apparently I'm also good at channeling my hunger. I've started drawing but now my stomach is growling. I hope I still feel motivated after I eat a quick snack, I like how this picture is going so far.

>>2362451
Yours are clean and economic i'd say.
The problem with gesture is that it is very much subjective to the artists who drew it. I think right now you should test it by adding basic forms to the gesture and see if it works or not and then get back to it in 2-3 days.
>Much more than "a-ha!" moments I find vast spaces of "what in the fuck am I even doing?"
Your development is in that "what the fuck am i even doing?" moment.
mfw i wake up, sit down to draw and realize that i cant draw anything without reference
>>2363242
I promise you can, you just haven't decided what you want to draw.
>>2363242
Work on construction. Start with simple blocks and form them like you would if you were working with clay or a similar traditional sculpting medium. That's probably what helped me the most from moving asway from just copying references. It's easy to say you know construction, you construct your way up towards the ref, but you also know where everything will be beforehand because it's right there in the ref. When you're working on your own it's important to work heavier through construction.
That's just how it was for me anyways - maybe you'll find some help in trying to adapt my thinking.

>>2363382
yep, if you get eliminated then you're kicked out of all active challenges. if you update then it keeps you in all active challenges. this system is to allow new people to join and let the eliminated back in.
there will be topic challenges coming up in the future where you have to draw the suggested topic everyday or be eliminated and they should see a higher turnover rate than the LAS. getting eliminated from one of those won't kick you out of the LAS, as long as you keep submitting.

As for adding basic forms, I guess I should start doing form studies along side my gestures and when comfortable with the concept, I'll start taking the next steps to start fleshing out.
Thanks a bunch, guys!
