Questions go in the QUESTION THREAD
This is for posting studys & getting critique.
>Thread study: I dont fucking know. More animals?
TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - there are many studies left unreplied, which is bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.
Old thread: >>2322786
Linked the wrong thread, whoopsies
here's the old one: >>2320096
any help/comment appreciated
>>2324088
there's a lot going on here! you've got a bunch of gestures of animals and of people, some character illustrations, an eye, some rendering, etc... to post something so scattered like this and then just say "any help appreciated" doesn't seem very practical or efficient! being vague with what you're practicing and what you want critiqued begs for vague responses, like "loomis" or "read the sticky," so make an effort to be specific in the future.
>>2324073
How to get better???
>>2324095
Thank you for responding, i think my major question would be shading its something i ve been experimenting lately and i dont feel comfortable doing it yet, i will post specific drawings in the furture too
Some simple birds.
Guess I'l give the lizard a go with some more effort. Wish me ganbatte senpais
Then again..
I already draw this excersise from 'right side of brain' this really help me to understant how to draw?
>>2324124
This is the third time you asked and you already got an answer. Look back at the previous thread.
So I'm practicing seeing the flow in gestures. My old gestures used to have the problem of drawing the contour more so I was recommended to watch some lectures on the gesture and this is the result. Can I get a critique if I did these gestures correctly?
Alright, how's this?
>>2324178
It looks really nice. I like the details you added on for his and you can really see the form of the lizard. The only thing that looks odd is the eye since it seems bigger than the original. But other was I like it.
Anyone else learning art so they can draw friends for themselves?
>>2324101
study form
Hi I drew this. I based it on another drawing not on real life caused id figure it'd be easier and a good stepping stone before drawing from actual real life. I'll post the drawing i based it on in a second.
I would greatly appreciate feedback, I feel really lost and in dire need of a teacher. (I'm trying to get one but they all seem to be on vacation for christmas.)
>>2324211
>>2324101
I would recommend starting with way simpler subjects.
>>2324135
I didn´t find the previus thread & sorry I dont read the answer.. :C
My attempt at the lizard. Any critique on it?
>>2324242
bad proportions
>>2324211
looks like you are just copying shapes without analyzing what you are looking at. the angular shape of the glass doesnt line up for example
>>2324178
its okay. still have to look at proportions, the head is especially bad.
>>2324166
i dont understand the point of gesture drawing
>>2324124
it is suppose to help you view and draw shapes objectively rather than drawing the information that your brain thinks it knows about the object
>>2324106
cute
>>2324101
draw skeletons first. Take your time, your drawing looks rushed
>>2324088

>>2324274
your lines are shitty chicken scratches, especially the curves. You'll improve your understanding of spherical forms if you keep practicing them, but your lines will stay shit unless you start learning to loosen your grip and using your entire arm and shoulder to draw. Make your lines longer, more confident and purposeful, and make as few of them as you can. Sort of like >>2324166 but they're not the best example.
I suspect that the size of your tablet's drawing surface or the resolution of your canvas is stifling you. You'd be doing yourself a favour if you practice traditionally instead with large pieces of paper
>>2324269
>>2324257
kill yourself
>>2324276
oh ok
yeah my tablet's a fucking postage stamp. but i don't have a camera, so when i upload for critique i use a tablet. i do practice traditionally tho. are my spheres okay though?
>>2324276
is this an improvement?
Fucking shadows, how do they work?
Seriously, it actualy looked less shit before I added the shading.
>>2324335
the lines improved, can't say the same about the figure itself.
Just fuck my shit up
>>2324475
stop tracing, stop symbol drawing (eyelashes) tuke breaks everything
>>2324381
redline lottery
youre symbol drawing, go read the sticky. You can shade if you dont know what youre shading obviously.
>>2324516
>tracing
But I'm not, I just copied my best from a reference. I've been criticized for relying too much on references and that I am guilty of but not tracing. (Though someone in the porn thread did say they thought it looked traced).
I am guilty of symbol drawing. What is tukes? And how do you just "stop symbol drawing"?
>>2324522
to stop symbol drawing either bloc in everything, look intensely at every angle or construct everything out of forms.
>>2324527
How would you go about blocking out something as small as eyelashes?
>>2324528
block them all together. Kinda like in anime they use a thicker top part of the eye as a symbol of more eyelashes.
>>2324530
Ah, I see.
>>2324530
Maybe an example without the hair covering the eye lashes would be better.
>>2324073
I keep starting and erasing this study. I can't get the shape of the lizard's head right or its perspective. Is it a rectangle or circle? How the hell do I start this?
imaginative composition.
exhausted myself practicing anatony, trying backgrounds now,any advice?
working on this flat toned shading style kinda thing
I got wrecked but I might as well post it anyway.
>>2324536
theyre literally all the same. The reason why we darken the top is two-fold, less light because of eyelashes, and eyelashes. the stylization goes accross litterally everything.
>>2324516
while im at it let me precise that the fact that the two eyes arent the same height ( as they should be) is just an accident from going too fast, actually i should have posted that redline its just completely shitty.
Some turned out better than others. Business as usual I suppose.
How is my figure drawing?
Whoops, forgot to resize
>>2324601
scratchy, and you polish too much because of it.
when drawing lines try and focus by letting out a slow exhale when drawing larger lines.
and loosen up a bit m8
(also your leg anatomy is pretty bad)
>Working on Hampton's videos
>Week 1 is fun. Simply gestures
>Do said homework, move onto week 2.
>Literally throws everything about anatomy into your face
Hampton doesn't fuck around. Shit, there was so much in week 2, gotta re-watch that lecture.
>>2324581
No need for that, I got it.
Back to the sticky once again.
I'm learning perspective so....Super Mario.
Is figure drawing one of the most fun things to do /ic/? I haven't even done any proper propotions/anatomy/whateverthefuck studying yet I am having soo much fun doing it, despite shit results.
>>2324891
Where do you take your references from?
Trying to work on gesture/construction, not as focused on proportion/copying. Critiques very welcome
>>2325001
Rotated
no references , and it probably shows
>>2325002
No clue what you think you're doing to that head. Try drawing the spine.
>>2325006
oh yeah, the head and left arm are still from the gesture and are pretty inaccurate. Looking out for the spine is a good tip though, thanks.
>>2324891
That's a good sign! I find that the difference between someone who has the potential to go professional and someone who's destined to be a hobbyist is that a professional actually enjoys doing drills and studies and the like. And even if you only plan to be a hobbyist, at least you'll be a pretty good one!
At the beginning, worrying about specific anatomy isn't too important, but it's good to at least try and nail the proportions and to capture the gesture of the pose. Keep on keeping on, dude.

i can vouch for the other 3 so i assume hes just as competent. Look. I hate minorities just as much as the next guy. By far and large they are lesser people. That doesnt stop some from being really good and some of ours from being really shit. Take Ukraine for instance, they dont even count as white people anymore. So drop your old fashioned racism and be more flexible within your hate, man. You probably appreciate some minorities that are anonymously posting. All this hate of course, doesnt include asians, who are by far and large slightly better than the white population.

>tell me everything you see wrong
Okay here goes
>feet are too oversimplified which generally reads to most people as lazy or lack of confidence drawing the area
>If pants are loose like that they're going to sag around the sides especially with suspenders
>Right hand looks like it is in his pants not the pocket which I am assuming you meant. This can be changed with the pants being a little higher and the hand facing more outward of the body
>Straps are uneven and look flat
>The hat is a little too low and the rendering on the side is weird, like the hair is coming the cap or the cap is concealed behind the hair which makes no sense. Even with wild unruly hair the cap will always sit over the hair and there will always be a visible.
>Eyebrows seem to float rather than have a potion on the face. They are the center of expressive emotion, draw them with purpose.
>Ear also sticks out a little far and too high. The tops of the ears end at the same height with the eyes

>>2325478
What pens do you use? The line quality is a little erratic.
>>2325477
this concept has potential, but you need to redraw it with better forms before coloring it next time
>>2325492
Do you use the details or "ornate pattern shit" to represent any symbolism. or is it just filler? No problem either way jw. You should try out some knotwork, the end result would be pretty cool. I have a PDF about it if you want.
>>2324106
How do I into construction lines? I feel like my figures are stiff and lifeless with them, but i cant draw from imagination without them

>>2324073
Gestures
Next I work on confident lines
>>2325503
The pens I was using don't say, but I imagine around 18mm and 25mm. I've been working on trying to keep a still hand and be more concise with each line. Working on it.
>>2325507
There are a lot of details between the two of them that are specific to my life or the events in it, but aside from maybe one or two things it's just filler.
I really want to learn how to draw, but i have literally no skill, like none at all. The sticky isnt much help to be honest as i want an easier progression.
How did you guys who started with nothing get going?
>>2324166
Drawing gestures is meant to draw what you see and capture the motion, nothing else really matters as long as you can tell what they're doing it a good start
>>2324276
you don't know what chicken scratch, read the sticky and learn about art before using terms improperly.
And saying "Shit" multiples times in one sentence doesn't make you sounds cool just like you don't know what you're talking about
>>2325652
Draw stuff. Draw shapes, animals, people, trees, litterally anything you can see, drawing it will make you better.
>>2325659
>it's studying not copying
I'm trying to learn how to select color and value better so copying is valuable to me as long as I don't use the color picker.
>>2325664
You sound dense. You can use reference without it being copying. And you just said you're studying color and value. Personally I think the painting looks better than the original photo.
Now draw another lizard. It would be a shame if a painting was overworked and began to look bad. Hey I even found one for ya.
>>2325670
>You can use reference without it being copying.
I know, the point is that not all studies are made equal and not every study where you copy a reference is a waste of time. It depends on your goal.
But thanks for the lizard maybe I'll give it a go later tonight, if I don't get too drunk with new year's eve stuff.

>Now, if you notice, i think my vertical are much better than my horizontal lines, does anyone know why this would be the case?
Your hand will always have angles that are more comfortable than others. Learn to adjust your paper (or if digitally rotate the document) to get the best motion if the motion is awkward.
>>2325823
okay then! i wanted to be sure it wasn't a lack of skill or anything.

regularly try to apply your studies of fundamentals in wider contexts. Understanding basic shapes is easy to apply to doing things like construction.

I am a total beginner...how can I be better
As soon as im about to upload a picture i realzie how off it looks. Im so frustrated now, i actually thought this looked ok for the past 1 1/2 hours. I just can't ever make stuff look right.
Crits are welcome but here is some stuff i noticed already:
-Values are off (in part because of the camera, i promise)
-Proportions are off (nose and ear are too big)
-Face is too wide
-the hat is not in perspective
Anything more before i kill myself?
>>2324101
My advice would be to look at different pictures of women or men or whoever/whatever you're drawing in different poses and make sure you don't forget to draw an outline. OutlInes are your friend, trust me. I just split up human anot my into different simple shapes and guide them with lines. Pic related, I kept my outlines for this picture. If you look closely at the lighter shaded lines I turned a full human body into simple shapes and traced along those shapes and added lines to show movement, which direction an arm or a leg is going.
>>2326581
>Anything more before i kill myself?
Look up how great artists drew things, it makes things a lot easier, trust me.
>>2326186
this one is good I love him
>>2326579
Try to focus on laying you proportions correctly before you actually fill in features. Have a single, clear light source. Don't smudge your paper with your finger
>>2326581
This is really nice construction but I think it's held back by the way you can't make out a light source. Looks flat, you know? Also the lips point downward on (the face's) right side. As for proportions I can't tell because I don't know your reference. Look into values a little more and you'rd be really good.
>>2326425
>What am I doing wrong?
You put an I where the A should be.
What are good exersises to get into constructing figures?
I can draw spheres, boxes and there kind of things and maybe even know a bit about 3d ish stuff but still cant grasp the whole construction thing. I read a bit of the theoretical things about it but it hadnt made click yet, so im hoping to find something more practical to get into it.
>>2326180
im not throwing around buzzwords, legit have a hard time seeing that head. not sure if back of front ,etc.
>>2326179
its not about the line art, you simply didnt do construction.but answering your question literally, dropping down lines may help.
some real beginner work on babbu's first tablet
excuse the dogshit lines, I'm trying out a whole bunch of stuff to find a decent primary brush setting for simple linework - it doesn't help that my tablet's not resting on a secure plane
Any comments or critiques? I think I'm missing something really important drawing heads.
>>2326723
What tablet did you get / what program are you using? It looks like you have absolutely no pressure sensitivity.

>>2326736
Make sure your drivers are installed correctly and see if you can get your pen pressure to adjust either size or opacity. Unless you're going for a very particular look everything you draw will look bad without pen pressure. I've never used Krita so I can't advise on brushes, though. Sai is pretty nice as babby's first digital art platform.
Also remember anonymous, expensive software is no obstacle to an ambitious man with an internet connection.

don't do this to me anon
I bruise easily
>>2326751
don't worry about him, he hasn't shut up in days.
C&C please
>>2326766
Mouth is too small as well as the nose.
>>2326766
youre focusing too hard on some features and completely undermining others (big eyes small nose)
Also dont post pictures this big ever again.
Id recommend you do some face studies.
>>2326768
>youre focusing too hard on some features and completely undermining others (big eyes small nose)
Have you never heard of stylization?
>>2326755
ah
posting a new sketch with updated drivers, apparently I had the pen wrong. still no pressure sensitivity, need to look through Krita's options because my tablet is definitely supposed to support it
threw technique to the wind and just let loose for a little
>>2326776
Do you have parkinsons or something? Slow your roll man, those are messy lines even for someone new to tablets.
>>2326803
>IT'S JUST A STYLE BRO JUST A STYLE
Fuck off and read vilppu
>>2326783
tablet isn't on any solid surface, I'm just holding it for now - am on a dogshit laptop and don't have much space to work with
these were mostly just to find a brush for linework
>>2326811
I'm not making excuses. That is not a style I frequently use, but the proportions were intentional. There's no reason to point out what I did on purpose
Now YOU fuck off, faggot
>>2326766
No detail on neck looks kinda weird, though I'm a beginner as well, so don't take my word for it.
>>2326826
Thanks for the advice ;)
>>2326814
not the same anon but
a.) if you ask for criticism expect criticism even for things you like in the drawing. what do you even want concrit on?
b.)you can't expect everyone to understand the specific stylistic choices you used whether on purpose or not
c.) Even if something is done intentionally it doesn't necessarily translate into a successful drawing.
>>2326828
I expected suggestions like 'you should contrast more', 'pay more attention to the shading', 'improve the eyeballs', 'be careful with simmetry', not shit like 'lol eyes too big read loomis xD'
it was obvious I made a choice for stylization, and 'something done intentionally doesn't necessarily translate into a successful drawing' was the reason that I asked for criticism
pff whateaver, not gonna even answer anymore
>>2326849
>not shit like 'lol eyes too big read loomis xD'
But nobody ever said that. They said
>youre focusing too hard on some features and completely undermining others (big eyes small nose)
>Mouth is too small as well as the nose
They were just trying to put in their criticism (something you asked for) on your work. You got immediately defensive. Not to mention your choice of stylization is not as obvious as you think it is.
>>2325670
why am i having such a hard time posting?
>>2326766
kek
middleschool level at best
Sticky for you

Stylization thread will say the exact same thing. It's NOT a style. Whether I can convince you now or youll figure it out later in your journey will hinge completely on whether or not i can convey it visually. So this is my try to get you to see the error of your thoughts.
PS: you belong in the beginner thread since you aren't thecnically proficient. You will recieve nothing but mockery in the alternative thread.
This is because the shape of the eye allows for it to be bigger in comparison to yours. Also, your being too realistic ( or trying to) imagine if someone put a photo and just made the eyes bigger and the nose smaller, that would look terrible. Basically with great rendering thats what your style would achieve,
>>2326812
Here's another sketch with more layers, trying to actually establish the skeleton and all that, plus I got my tablet onto a semi-solid surface so the lines aren't so Michael J. Fox
Sorry if this is considered over-posting for the thread, not an /ic/ veteran by any means
>>2326891
blog?
>>2326891
>that missingno dick
oh god
better check what eraser I'm using
>>2326894
that's the least of your worries
What should I draw to practice?
>>2326904
hands. gesture. value study.
Look at prokos gesture tutorial. learn form and apply.
>>2325670
I really struggled on that little fucker for some reason.
>>2326904
Lizards.
>>2326904
Everything you want to learn to draw and more. Generally drawing from life/photo, but otherwise every conceivable thing you try to put on paper, do it.
>>2326903
well obviously otherwise I wouldn't be posting in the _beginner_ thread
did you have something to actually contribute, or...?
>>2326883
>>2326766
This is corrected by only playing with size.
>>2326917
So much better
>>2326883
Speaking of beginners, when do you stop being a beginner? I feel like I've treading water in the beginner stage for some time now.
>>2326918
I honestly want this guy to reply and apologize to everyone.
>>2326920
Apologize for what?
>>2326921
for being an ass that can't take criticism in a thread full of a lot more people who are starving for criticism
>>2326917
>corrected
>turned your deliberately exaggerated proportions into more realistic sized ones because I like things that way
>taught nothing
