The face is kind of out of place with how clearly defined it is compared to everything else. Bring the same attention at least to the closest objects to the viewer and the shape of the body; the torso is a bit ambiguous blending into the background. Overall a good composition.

you can probably tell I'm no real authority, but from looking at it I could give some suggestions:

1. The lighting looks strange, but I think that is because of the eraser cleanup. I would guess that the original shapes made the light look better, in which case I would recommend doing the practice on one layer with a painted background, so you can more organically correct the forms.

2. Now, you clearly demonstrate you have an understanding of how value works, i.e. hilight, midtone and shadow are all where they should be, but the issue I think is that you aren't thinking as geometrically as you should if that makes sense. Because of the structure, value doesn't "drape" as it should. The way I would fix this is, as example, for the pear, just make it 2 well rounded spheres first, to get a good grip on the light, then work on the contour.

Not sure if that's great advice, but I hope it does help.

Just keep studying, try to draw bigger and learn more techniques for drawing heads than just loomis heads (If you've learned that yet.)
Also drawing a neck or at least the start of the neck is important as it keeps your picture from looking less like just a floating head and more like the start of a person.

>>

>>
>>2313853
Just work on your fundamentals. I would say start with proportions. the eyes are too far apart. Think about the anatomy under the clothes. and think about how the cap will fit on his head. Good luck.

>>
>>2313863
you forgot to mention it's a total copy of another image(and a shit one at that). what the fuck can you possibly want from posting here? how to get better at copying other peoples drawings?
>>
>>2313876
I used a reference, but I didn't trace if that's what you mean. Like I said, I'm new, and I've heard that drawing from reference can be a good way to improve drawing skills. Didn't realize that doing that was against the rules, sorry.
>>
just fuck my shit up senpai
>>
>>2313879
you copied it. you posted it. don't do that. draw from reference to learn, not to make out that something you did was yours. please read the sticky for your own good (we want to help you)
>>
>>2313891
Ohh, I didn't realize that. Sorry! Can I still use references for poses though? Or pre existing characters if I draw them in a different pose? Like I said, I'm new here, so I'm not up to date on all the faux pas of this board.
>>
>>2313897
not just on this bord but for putting art out in general. yeah you can use references for poses, but if you're using someone else's art it's only polite to ask if you can use it, and then mention them when you post.

if you're doing pre-existing characters but a different pose you don't need to ask, just mention that it is fan art and/or mention the original creator of the character

also never copy the drawings line for line if you're using someone else's art as a reference (unless it's a drawing that you want to learn from , but those should never see the light of day) , just use it to inform you're drawing.
>>
>>2313904
Thanks. I absolutely suck at drawing from imagination, so imma poke my head in that Fun With a Pencil book for a while

wish me luck

Started this morning and finished the last 3-4 pages in the last couple hours. Was studying, refining some things for a drawing a started and wanted to finish, but felt like I was lacking some knowledge, hence the arms as well.
>>
>>2314184
For 5 min studies those are really good. I suppose you could stand to loosen up a bit more. Some of the joints in your images (knees especially) look a bit poorly drawn, but I imagine if that has more to do with your time limit than drawing ability.
>>
>>2314142
You mention you've been learning construction but I'm seeing very little of it in your drawing. Perhaps focus on the construction of each facial feature before constructing an entire head. Your noses and eyes in particular are lacking in form and look very flat.

Thanks for the response, that's good advice. I guess I've been having issues because I make a construction, set up the guidelines and it looks okay, it just doesn't quite look like the subject. So then I end up drawing contours. I guess I just need to construct more accurately?

>>2314933
I think painting with a slant has messed up your sense of what should be vertical. Trees grow vertically, people stand vertically.
Shadows and highlights do not necessarily come from brighter versions of the same color, rather often they will go into shades of yellow (depending on the light source) for highlights, and shades of blue (depending on color of objects giving backlighting) for the shadows.
I think if the picture were greyscale you would seem to have a good variety of brightnesses placed well throughout it.

I went through a similar thing anon. Just take it easy on yourself for a while, draw some low pressure things like this. It looks really nice, it would be a shame if you gave it up entirely. No formal schooling, but I do watch a fair amount of videos by artists who know their stuff. Generally, when I see good art, I pick out what I like about it and try to incorporate it into my later work.

You should be careful with areas where two lines in different planes meet like on the hairband. From the way you drew it, I would assume the hair is supposed to go in front of the hairband, but it looks like the hairband covers it.

I'm learning how to render by painting over lineworks made by other people - those were quick 10 minutes studies.

Tips about rendering (cast shadows, values, contrast) are welcomed.
>>
>>2315712
too small beans sorry :)
>>
>>2315834
you might be onto something!
>>
>>2315834
You're just doing pillow shading because you don't know the forms you're representing. You're going to still need to know the anatomy to be able to truly render effectively, just vaguely going over everything with a soft brush will only get you so far. Knowing the forms will help you know where to place hard and soft edges and cast shadows and occlusion. Right now the lineart is still doing most of the heavy lifting in these. I'd recommend grabbing reference if you're going to try this, and studying the different types of shadows and highlights. ctrlpaint.com has some good videos on the "anatomy" of a shadow you should look into.

Not him, but that's not pillow shading. Usually it is frowned upon to not know what the hell you're talking about.
>>
>>2315859
>You're just doing pillow shading because you don't know the forms you're representing. You're going to still need to know the anatomy to be able to truly render effectively,

First of all, that's not pillow shading.
Secondly, the dude obviously knows his shit. The anatomy is fine.
Finally, you can go fuck yourself with such a far-reaching critique.
>>
>>2315655
Looking good. I like the shark.
>>
>>2315834
Normally a good shading adds to the work. Yours mostly subtract. Your directional lighting is better than your shapes.
>>
>>2315888
Bullshit
>>
>>2315883
(not any of these people btw) So it isn't pillow shading but he does have a point. The lineart (which is by other artists) is doing most of the work here. If you hid the lineart layer, would the forms still be readable?

But anyway it's just a short study. You could learn something from this but using references from real life will still teach you more.

It's pretty much the definition of pillow shading. The shadows just go all over the place without regard to places where the form actually should be catching light, and the shading is just all in the center of the forms in an attempt to simulate light and bounce light. There's no edge control whatsoever. The anatomy of the lineart is fine but you obviously missed the part where he said he didn't draw any of those, he's just shading over them. So if you really feel there's no need to know the shape of something to be able to effectively use shadows to describe its shape, I can't possibly contest that.
>>2315966
Here anon, I made an example of what I mean about using rendering to show where light is hitting, define the forms, and add volume. It's rough, but hopefully it gets the idea across.

Fucking hell, godamn. I wasn't gonna ask what it was because I figured you didn't want to talk about it but wow. That's fucked up. I mean seriously, what kind of fucking parent tells their own kid to kill themself, shit. Anyway there are definitely jobs you can get drawing creatures, or even just regular animals. It might be worth going to some kind of school if you can get a setup where you can move out and live on campus. If not, I guess I'd suggest looking for part time work or maybe drawing furry shit. You actually can make a lot of money drawing non sexual or fetishy furry stuff for people, but you have to be pretty good and willing to do OC's. There are options anon. I know that can be hard to believe, I have to remind myself of it more often than I would like to but, there are people with way less to offer this world who get by fine, and more opportunities than a lot of people realize, so I just try to stay mindful of that and keep moving forward.
