This is for posting studys & getting critique.

>Thread study: Aaaand, back to animals it is! This one should be rather simplew since its pretty much a front view so there is no tilt to fuck up

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - there are many studies left unreplied, which is bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

did you color fill it on the same layer? there are theses awkward white spots here and there. Also, and you've probably heard this a lot, but you're chicken scratching the lines on the ellipsis it seems. Remember, straight lines push away from the body, ellipsis pull toward. it makes your straight lines straighter and your curves a little more accurate. If i were you I would have taken the line work, put it on another layer, increased the brush size and inked it to remove the scratching

other then that, there's a certain potential in this, if you were to take some extra steps and polish, you could have something vibrant and fun
>>
>>2292313
vilpuu is good, try adding on anatomy and perspective to your study, it'll help balance out the areas of proportion
>>

loomis is a good book and have great references but sometimes it's not very didactic, you should try hampton's book, he doesn't have a very realistic drawings but it's easy to understand how he aproach the construction of the head.

I'm actually curious to understand how he simplified those faces. It's obvious, outside the focal point, he did very simple structure before hand, then went into shading. However, I wonder how the image looked before the shading.

Anyone know by any chance?

>>

always think of the lines throughout the image, as in, the top corner of the mouth should be equal on the right and left, also youre super accentuating some forms and ignoring others, really look carefully at the shapes and their relationship to each other in angles and size.

I'm having a lot of trouble with this. It's been 3 days and I don't feel like I entirely get it.
I'm not going to stop, but do most people do this part for every drawing of a face? Or do they just think about it? I feel like the steps just before this are more practical. I am still going to try. I have done a little over 60 of them and I am still bad so I need to do many more... right?
>>
>>2292784
Most people just imagine how it would look under their drawing. It's good to know the parts of a skull so you would understand the structure of the head better, things like planes and so on can do magic when it comes to describing form and volume.
Those aren't bad, try to do a shaded study of one so you would grasp the structure even better and I think you'll be good to continue with practicing other stuff.

Good luck!

Be careful not to just carbon copy the Loomis faces or you're missing the point of the exercises.
The idea is to understand construction of forms/shapes, not draw gentlemen with round noses and pipes.
Try doing what he's doing from different angles using the same principle of using simple shapes to create something.

It's not great, but it's an exercise for a reason. You need to be more deliberate with the lines you're putting down, they're too scratchy at the moment.
Try doing the first three exercises from Bert Dodson's key's to drawing, then give it another shot. I've done that particular exercise a bunch of times, and getting the line proportions right is still a problem, so keep at it.

My drawings are always bad because I'm terrible at proportion. I am grinding on human figures because they're interesting to draw and I can use the 8 head height rule to practice with. I know I have much more practice to do, but is there anything that stands out in general that I should pay attention to in the future?
>>
>>2293456
My reference.
>>
>>2293456

Looks to me like you're just contour drawing. I say you should start looking into construction. I'm sure you've seen examples of people drawing mannequins with basic shapes like cylinders.
When I was trying to get better at drawing people I found after I practiced construction a bit a lot of basic anatomy how to make things look more three dimensional just snapped into place for me.
>>
>>2293482
I've looked into that before, but I have difficulty figuring out the shapes/sizes of my constructions, especially when working from the chest to the hips. I'm bad at judging 3D shapes. Assigning curvy objects like a chest to simple shapes is a pain. I understand the basic idea on why it's done, but my execution is weak. Guess it's just a matter of practice.

What's the best way to approach water behind rocks? Trying to go about using the Peter Han method, this is difficult.
>>
>>2293505

It is. I recommend practising it anyway, I think you'll improve faster that way than just trying to do contour drawings.
When I was figuring it out I watched Mike Hampton's figure drawing videos. I forget where I found them so you might have less luck getting your hands on them, but he has an 8 week course called analytical figure drawing around somewhere where he goes through basic anatomy and how to construct it.
>>
>>2293456
Like other anon said, you're jumping the gun to quickly. Don't worry about getting it right the first time through, do underdrawings and work from there. Proportions aren't as big an issue as gesture. I'd say do more underdrawings, and really understand the forms you're trying to convey. It'll give your sketch some depth.

>>
>>2293605
Yeah I figured the colors were too fucked to continue with so I started working in values.
Thanks for the tip, I'll try lightening the water in areas where the plants aren't so crowded.
>>
>>2293585
You might try experimenting with taking a light marker (10 or 20% grey) and do the gesture drawing or underdrawing with that first, then do the linework overtop that. Just a different way of approaching things and may mean you can do more efficient and nicer linework without it looking scratchy or having pen construction lines that look bad.

They're pretty good overall though, not sure what I can suggest. The transition from lights to shadows is very abrupt, maybe try taking a lighter grade of marker and having an intermediate step so it transitions smoother. You'll need to work quickly while the marker is still wet for it to be a nice transition, so it could take some practice.

I also think it looks bad the way you fade off the incompletion with the stool and the head and cast shadow on the ground. I would try to get it a complete shape rather than fading to messy strokes. Another thing you can try is hinting at some background. Since markers are good for quick tone block-in you can indicate if there is a pattern of light and dark behind the model where maybe there would be some nice contrast in some areas or the model might fade into shadow with the background in other places. It will help with leading the eye, composition, and value relativity and contrast. This isn't marker but it should give an idea of what I mean: http://static1.squarespace.com/static/534ecc56e4b076631492738c/5359949be4b0f7c14f4c2996/5359949de4b0e4fde0885025/1398379686443/chillin_large.jpg

One thing I've always been jealous of some beginners - they're not afraid to try different concepts or different compositions. I just drew the same things over and over in the same scene and now (still as a beginner) I am able to draw things a little better but my composition is awful
>>
>>2292355
It's very "mushy." I'm assuming those are mountains or some sort of rocky/sand formations. Try using references to learn about how different mountains/rocks/sand can look, and try not to blend as much. In terms of composition, I can tell that the yellow pyramid and sun are the focal area so that's good if that's what you were going for.
>>
>>2293709
I kinda like the idea of having a painting space. I like how you draw hair. A shame about the robbery mate.
>>
>>2293012
I've seen people who draw for years and still are worse than you, so you're doing fine. But I would definitely work on consistency and form. The hands are (no offense) really bad. They look rushed. You may want to concentrate hands a bit more, because even professional art can be fudged up by bad hand anatomy, and hands are probably some of the hardest parts of a human to draw.

Another thing is symmetry. I'm not sure if it's intentional, but the eye on the right is a slight bit too high up. Nothing major, but just something to watch out for.
>>
>>2293709
You've definitely got some skill, and you really should get back into it.

Heres the thing though: Don't throw out your old shit. Even if you hate to look at it and it makes you cringe, you can compare to your old stuff to see just how far along you've come.

That definitely makes me feel more inspired to keep going.
>>
>>2293732
where should I start though? I have no clue where to begin.
>>
>>2293754
Definitely doesn't look like you'd be starting. You seem to already be pretty good.

I'm still a beginner, so I still have issues with where to begin.

Best I can say is to do what inspires you, and what frustrates you the most.

Draw what you like, but also draw what you don't feel comfortable drawing.

If you can't draw female faces? Force yourself to draw female faces.

Think of what you most avoid drawing, and make it happen.

Nothing like needing to draw something and being unable to because you avoided drawing it.

I really avoided drawing feet for a long time, but all it did was hold me back, so I started to draw nothing but feet for a few hours, and I broke the shell.

From this, figure out what's wrong. From what you've drawn, I think you may wish to work on form and symmetry a bit more, but your shading is pretty fucking great.
>>
>>2292738

Last time I posed in one of the other boards someone suggested expanding my perspective, so I went back to Loomis to study moving the body in perspective. To weld the idea in I've been practicing poses and making sure to try and apply it. So far I've gotten to a method like this. 1 to make the box and sketch the mannequin in before 2.A moving the body parts into position and then 2.B blocking in body parts while trying to account for the space each block takes up and how it affects what's next to it, and then 3 adding in lines(Assuming I was finishing it. Does it sound like a good way to apply the method or is there an easier method anyone can think of? Been doing this for a while before I try to learn about light, to make sure that I'm learning the new method and applying it so I don't just drop it later.

This might be more of a technical question.

I'm using Manga Studio and there is a rectangle tool. I have set the side ratios so that it will always draw a perfect square.

Manga Studio has a feature that lets things snap to perspective rulers, like this one point perspective I've made. When I snap the perfect square to be in perspective, it comes out seriously distorted like in pic related.

This looks nothing like a perfect square to me, even if it is supposed to be in perspective. Am I missing something here?
>>
>>2293836
Try moving it farther away. Last time I checked, the closer you are to the vanishing point the more distortion comes into play.
>>
>>2293840

Doesn't work, there must be some problem with Manga studio because this makes no sense.

The problem is that you have no idea how perspective works and you randomly put down some guides thinking the software will do your job. Read a book.
>>

>randomly put down guide lines

literally chose the option that says "one point perspective", then moved the horizon and vanishing point.

Read a book and learn how perspective works. You moved shit around with 0 understanding of what you were doing.

You guys ever have one of those moments where you take a break for a few days, come back, and feel like you can only draw shit? I looked at stuff I was doing a week ago and it's not better than now but suddenly I feel like I finally can see whats wrong with my drawings and how I can improve. So much better than sucking and not knowing how to improve even if I still just suck.

yeah the idea was to capture the gestures and practice proportions with lots of quick drawings before i start going slower and doing more detailed gestures, but yes my lines were all over the place and even drawing, many times i felt lost looking for the right line.

just keep going

I spent my whole holiday vacations alone trying to figure it out on my tablet and at the end of two weeks I was just beginning to get it. I would recommend trying to focus on understanding what makes a nose, eye and mouth look like they're facing a certain angle rather than the whole head.

Pick a nose with large sides/nostrils and try to figure out how the farther nostril is shaped to show that it is indeed the farthest, how the central part of the nose hides it and all that.

get your guidelines in, when a face shifts downwards all the features go towards the bottom so that nose was too high, the other was lacking basic proportion, anyway, just a cheap redline.

"Flat" seems to be the most recurring crit. There's actually no intended shading on that, but the mess could contribute to an illusion of shading I guess. Should I set up planar lines on the chest/waist/head placeholders? I'll sketch up a quick placeholder to show how I start.

I've been lurking around a bit and people here and in other art sites I find keep on saying that I should stop stylizing until I get all anatomy and perspective down but.

When do I get to fuck around and have fun?

Not saying I'd completely stop doing studies but how do I balance studying and doing stuff I enjoy?

Or perhaps I'm looking at this whole thing wrong.

Help.
>>
>>2294761
>how do I balance studying and doing stuff I enjoy?
For most beginners, you just need mileage. So it's important to just DRAW.

If drawing what you like helps get you mileage, then draw your animus and your mechs to get your pencil on paper. Eventually you will get to a point when you realize that your faces are weak, your poses are stiff, and you will want to grind to improve in these areas to make your drawings better.

Also, don't just draw without critically analyzing your work. It's important to create a feedback loop for yourself and study your weakest parts every day.
>>
>>2294603
Alright, thank you for answering at all.

still do stuff to have fun, but do the studies, anatomy and stuff more. you can still do stylised shit, it just wont be as good as if you knew anatomy, but that dosen't mean no fun.

I'll let you in on a gem of insight. When you keep doing anatomical/perspective studies you want to get to the point of eventually becoming good enough to do 1:1 copies. It is boring but once you hit that benchmark, the fun starts happening.

You've probably heard/read people say that you need to 'Push' the form. What they mean is that once you can do 1:1 you become more aware that because they're copies, they're 'Stiff' and have no life. This is where 'Pushing' the form comes in. You see a person hunched over, when you draw that person you REALLY try to show that person hunched over by exaggerating the line, which comes at the cost of likeness. This is when you start going beyond the reference, trading in the likeness of a pose into making it more realistic.

Little by little as you keep altering your own drawing in order to REALLY show what the body is doing, you're now developing your own style and more importantly, drawing from your own imagination. A little more curved line here, a little more exaggerated shape there, all these little changes are not at all the exact lines/shapes you're trying to copy but your own design sensibilities coming out from your own head.

You start having fun really pushing poses as far as you can while still being readable and clear as to what your poses are doing. Before you know it your own drawings will look completely different than the references but still convey exactly what the pose is communicating.

>abstract tl:dr
When you were learning how to write you had to copy letters over and over and over again until the shapes you made looked like the letters you were trying to learn, which is boring. After learning the basic shape of a letter, you eventually started changing how the letter looked until you liked it (Or got lazy, didn't practice enough and made a shape that barely passed as a letter) Your handwriting is your own, you learned the letters but how it looks was entirely up to your own imagination.
>>
>>2292725
In relation to this actually, how long did it take most of you to get through this stage of drawing (symbol drawing) as an absolute beginner?
>>
>>2293712
Proportions on the head of the left guy are kinda fucked, his head looks squashed. I think that thing on the right side is a guy with a gas mask operating some kind device, can't tell because of the picture quality. I think you should read some things on figure drawing and try to get the proportions right before attempting to move to such difficult foreshortened poses. Take this with a grain of salt tho, I ain't even better than you
>>
>>2294873

It took me a couple of months, though I still fuck up now and then and draw really symbol-looking eyes.
I think the biggest factor in helping me kick it for the most part was when I started doing construction from basic shapes, though. It got my brain to click about looking at things as three dimensional forms.
>>
Is there such a thing as symbol drawing constructively?
>>
>>2294900

Well, "symbol drawing" refers to drawing what your subconscious thinks you should draw instead of what you actually want to draw, so it's always counter-productive.

You can imitate symbols on purpose, to make something recognizable, as often is the case in cartoons and other forms of exaggerated drawing.

you know it, boss

>>2295665
it was the hardest part
>>

Please someone help me find it. It's not even deja vu at this point, I've seen it. It's a real picture of someone that I saw someone poorly draw a long time ago on the internet. Tinyeye doesn't work, but I swear it's real and this guy stole it. I wouldn't make three consecutive posts otherwise.
>>
>>2295651
Next time don't bother with the scribbles shading. It is not describing the form properly nor the value. I would also draw the whole figure instead of just a part of it.

Be careful of the angles too. You found a vertical line in the photo that extends from the pit of the neck through the belly button and to the crotch. It's great that you saw this! But in your drawing the pit of the neck isn't really drawn properly to line up with it, and the crotch is misaligned too. And then if you look at the leg on the right (her left) in the photo it extends down from the crotch nearly vertically but slightly away. In yours it is angled the opposite direction.

Be careful too over going over the same lines (outline) too many times. You are going over like 5 times and it is making the linework very thick which gives makes it less precise.

Well picasso fucking sucked as an artist, that's why I didn't recognize him. He was never worth anything to me

He was better than you, fucking pleb.
>>
>>2295674
And you're an asshole. No wonder it looked bad, it was picasso. God what a terrible artist, why was he famous (is? I doubt he's still alive) All he did was draw shapes and knew nothing.
>>
>>2295677
OBVIOUS BAIT
ignore this pleb
>>
>>2295676
That's a nice painting. I bet picasso didn't paint it. And no, I don't draw stupid fucking cartoons with eyes on their foreheads.
>>
>>2295679
Listen, I'm not baiting. I don't know much about famous artists, but I respect the work of any artist besides Picasso. I really don't like Picasso. Sure, he invented cubism or whatever, but I don't think his art style requires any fucking talent. I would instead call it dedication. Dedication to a shitty art style that only hipsters like. Fuck, why can't I have an opinion without being called a troll
>>
>>2295670
>shading not describing form
yeah you're right

>crotch is misaligned
FUCK! how did I not notice this

thanks for taking a look at this, greatly appreciated
>>
>>2295637
could you elaborate on that more?
>>
>>2295568
Sorry for me being an attention-whore, but what do you think about this pic, guys?
I mean it definitely is not OK, just now i've noticed that one of his eyes is slightly off, and, after some adjustment, overall turn of the head became obviously insufficient with whole face being flat.
But I'm tired, and not sure if it really true or just me being compulsive.

Is drawing non-nude figures bad for studies?

i've found that knowing what's under the clothes helps you understand how they hang on the human body. also fabric is a monster (at least for me)

be more sure with your lines, your very chicken scratchy, beyond that, the design is interesting enough if not generic (skinny rich man). Also, you could look into gesture to add more life to the pose if you really wanted to

why does it look so much better with some random photoshop filter? How do I go about adding texture and depth to the base drawing? Like the filter does but manually.

keep drawing and copying stuff
this isn't the worst animu I've seen so you're getting there, keep going

but work on line control more, don't chicken scratch
try to draw 1 line instead of multiple small lines
to practice drawing lines, check out drawabox tutorials on google (the first lesson)
