Questions go in the QUESTION THREAD
This is for posting studys & getting critique.

>Thread study: Try not to get lost in the complex texture, if you arent confident enough, just try to draw the head/body in general, it can be a fast sketch, the key is just not having your stuff look flat overall.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - there are many studies left unreplied, which is bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

[Reposting this because I fucked it up at the end of the last thread]

Usually a lurker, stumbled upon the head study thread, and after reviewing some of the materials that were posted there, I took at stab at my first head.

Should I continue my artistic ventures? It felt fun.

(And I know, fuck the rendering until I get the basics. I was just messing around with it.)
>>
>>2285044
>Should I continue my artistic ventures? It felt fun.
Yes and don't worry about what anybody else says yet. Just draw, keep drawing, and keep trying to learn. Focus on quantity over quality right now, don't get too hung up over when you make mistakes, and just keep drawing.
>>
>>2285044
>Should I continue my artistic ventures?
no, just kill yourself, unless you resize your image next time
>>
Holy fuck why always these animal shits? Fuck animals. I hope the chinese start eating chameleons. Here is a picture of a human for study.
>>
>>2285087
because its assumed that you are drawing pages and pages of humans every day already, so there is no need to have yet another one in the beginner threads. also its supposed to take people like you out of your comfort zone
>>
>>2285087
There is the Study Thread for that
>>
>>2285096
So apparently the "human form so complex" thing is just a meme and artists study human form for YEARS just to troll people and stay in their comfort zone. Nobody fucking draws these shitty pictures. Not too long ago the beginner threads always had one normal fucking picture for people to draw. Tons of people drew it because it was a normal portrait or a figure that they would be drawing anyway and you could compare your work to other people. Now you kikes post these retarded pictures that maybe 3 people are going to draw because nobody cares about the subject.

I'd much rather have animal studies in the OP than human shit every time.
There's no fucking shortage of resources for human references.
>>
Is the Art Academy series a good start for someone who wants to get back into drawing?
>>
>>2285114
Google "chameleons" you kike. It's not about shortage of resources but having a picture that BEGINNERS will draw. Last 5 or so threads were mostly animal references and some trees, maybe 4 people actually drew that shit, so what's the point?
>>
>>2285121
This. I just started drawing and these past few OPs have been pretty daunting. A car, weird-ass shaped animals, Kind of hard to start with these.
>>
>>2285145
humans are way harder
>>
>>2285145

Get out of your comfort zone. That alone is a skill, so dont get stressed out if your pic isnt the way you want it. If you could get everything new down in one try you wouldnt be human, you'd be a photocopier

Where can I sell my paintings in person? I live near NYC but I have no idea what to do (it would be a 30 minute bus ride on a good day from where I live). I have a few pieces ranging in size from 9 x 12 in. to 24 x 36 or 24 x 48. I tried a local "art show" but it ended up being this family event with local bands, some food, and a small wall of 5 different "artists" including myself. I was hoping for more of a gallery tier thing but it was not even on par with a flea market.

Any advice? Should I try selling online? Painting is the only thing that helps with the emotional instability. I don't know where to start, 19 years old, poor, and no friends. Parents aren't fond of the idea and hate it when I get paint on the walls and floor, going to be cleaning that tomorrow. Were moving to a smaller one bedroom apartment (five people) in NY by December 1st.

I assume that's from a reference. Post that too. I am a beginner as well, so take this with a grain of salt. Maybe it will help.

Try to break everything down into lines, always measure angles and lengths. Hold your pencil up to the ref and then the drawing with one eye closed. Is the angle the same? Is the length the same? Use Negative space, especially for eyes. It makes it easier to get the ratio of the whites to the iris down. You've drawn the eyes way larger than they would be, and I made that mistake a lot in the past too.

Another tip to see differences is look between your ref and your drawing rapidly.

Form is defined by changes in value. Learning to see value as you've learned to see lines in Bettys book will help you a lot. I found I symbol drew a lot when I got overwhelmed by a values or couldn't really understand them.

I hope that helps.

How you get such clean lines?
>>
>>2285660
Draw in quick, successive strokes. Don't scrawl and spend 5 hours drawing a single line. The more time you spend doing that, the more squiggly it gets.

Use the natural curve of your wrist to make smooth curves as well. Practice moar.
>>
>>2285630
Looks lanky, doesnt feel like is standing in space. Look up anatomy in your case women anatomy references and compare it to your drawing and you would spot the mistakes. When you are starting as a beginner steer away from drawing from imagination cause it comes out looking shitty but rather use references so you have something to compare it too, instead of making it up as you go. Redo and this time look at references if you dint know how somehting looks like.
>>
>>2285655

Im not the guy who said he would redline you but I'll give you some of my advice.

Your cleaned up version is actually worse than your rough version. You were on the right track using a 3d shape to form the nose, and then you completely flattened it. You also lost all your line weights. You need to remember/ learn the very basic proportions of the face. For example, in your image you start with a circle. If you start with a circle, you divide the circle in half and the bottom of the face is another half circle down, then you chop off the sides of the circle. Just from looking at your construction, the circle is not divided in the middle (too low) and the chin is not carried down another half length of the circle, and you left on the sides of the circle, leaving you with a VERY wide face. You should be able to fit one eye length between the eyes, and just another half eye length to the side of the face on either side. The bend in the jaw to the chin is often even with the mouth or below, not right below the ears. Eyebrows are low on men and high on women, yours are too high, too arched, and stick out too far past the eye to be male eyebrow. Very simple proportional stuff. Ears are pretty much flat against the head, they don't stick out that much. Usually they are more like long rectangles than the typical ear shape you are drawing (this is also showing that you are symbol drawing).

Keep drawing you got a long way to go. Maybe watch some proko videos on the face? You NEED to learn proportion.

>>
>>2285692

Eyes should be wider apart. Use a reference and re-draw the eyes because they're awful. Either go realistic with the thing or look at some stylized eyes and study how people actually stylize them. They're not lemons with big lines around them.

Your nose is too low, it should end halfway between the brow and chin. Get rid of the lines coming down from his eyebrows.

Mouths don't look like that, and you can only get away with that in a really simplistic style. Like the eyes, take a look at some references.

The whole general shape of the head is wonky, but you're probably going for some anime shit so whatever. You'd be better off studying real skull shapes.

Honestly, you should just work on realistic studies for a while, it would help you a lot more than this.

What's wrong? Are you anxious? Stop being so timid. Try to have some fun. If you're hung up because you're going to post it just tell yourself that you're not showing anyone and it's private study (which I recommend). Do quick studies and draw a little smaller. You really shouldn't focus on one thing over a few days. You're not going to learn jack shit that way. Draw a bunch head-shaped circles on a piece of paper, bisect ala loomis method, and draw in the features. Break down what you may be doing wrong then do it again without making these same mistakes.

on top right face: bottom of jaw/chin is too thin, so rather than looking like he's facing upwards, it ust looks like he has a weak chin. alternatively you could make the neck a bit thinner at the jawline (left side of neck becomes a slightly more vertical line.
nose is a bit wonky.

Your lines are rough. Try to force yourself to not go over another line. Think before you draw every line. Obviously, this may be extremely hard at first but just try to make a line in one big swoop, no feathering. specially for contours of a figure.

How to quickly and fluidly describe the pose and motion of a figure.
Not the contours or the bones.
>>
>>2286294
Guess I flubbed this one then. Just did contour and didn't really capture the motion at all. Supposed to make things look fluid and natural, right?
>>
>>2286298
More or less. Look into the methods other people use (proko, sycra, loomis' "Sweep", vilppu, any of these and more), and start with very action-heavy poses before more subdued, stationary poses.
>>
>>2286306
Yeah. I'm reading Vilppu now and I've got Sycra's vids on bookmark. Thanks for the bit about action poses. Is it easier to capture action poses than stationary poses in gesture drawing given that one has more motion to the figure?
>>
>>2286311
Different anon, but I will say Proko's method didn't sound so "clear" to me. After downloading his prem vids from CGpeers, he definitely cut out some info in regards to his sessions.

Should I stick to burning through pages just trying to get good lines before moving on or should I actually move forward to other lessons and just practice it again at other times?

I have a question for you guys here, I'm looking to make a portfolio for an art major. Haven't picked up my pencil strenuously for 3 years. I'm thinking of taking 6 months to a year to make the portfolio but I'm not sure what level I'm supposed to be submitting at? I'm not a complete alpha noob beginner but I'm definitely not good enough to make an extremely accurate face portrait.

Any tips? I expect I'll have to do many projects but I'm not sure if they're expecting you to be a professional when you walk in.

brushpens are super fun to use! dont get scared and keep at it for some time and itll build up your line control like crazy
>>
>>2286282
You worked really hard on your signature though. So there's that.
>>
>>2287219
Depends on a person and style. It may take some time to get used to them (I used brush for long time, then switched to brushpen cause it's more convenient and wrist doesn't hurt so much) They are ubercool for me, as I tend to like more aggressive drawings, and you can get drybrush effect which is very very nice. I like the combo of brushpen plus fineliner also.
>>
the body looks like a man's w tits. the waist should be more defined, the shoulders also look a little wide and the jaw line goes way too far back.
>>
>>2287206
>>2287219
agree, keep at it. i recommend starting with some line exercises. draw hundreds of long lines keeping the line as thin as possible. then move to curved lines connecting 3 dots. then lines that go from thick to thin etc. these exercises really help!
>>

Is it okay to learn under several figure drawing methods at the same time? Reading up on Vilppu, Hampton, and watching Proko, basically taking turns using their methods when approaching 30 second - 2 minute drawings. This isn't a bad thing, is it? I don't feel confused doing this. Actually, I find it kind of fun.
>>
>>2287328
Just use what works in a given situation.

Hampton is amazing for certain poses, but completely unusable for others. Huston works great for actual drawing, but is not really of much use for practice.
Vilppu I think is more for advanced people, since he doesn't have much of a process, he just does it, and does it differently in every video

I wanna get some opinions on wether values/shading/rendering is actually a useful or even requierd stepping stone. I want to keep things simple and feel like I could acquire the other skills by using simple wrapping lines, keeping values (and subsequently color) for last.

I learned it in high school, which was about five years ago. And I got pretty good at it, making fractals and other sick designs from scratch. But I don't remember shit about it now. I do have all of my work from high school but only in crappy JPG format.

you need to get over it a bit, mate. I know it's like showing how you really are to someone (if you are doing stuff that's straight outta emotion and is emotionally attached to it, and takes critique hard) but if you go to a course when everyone is afraid of judgement and need to show their work and the people saying stuff about it are not idiots saying "that's shit" then everything will be fine. I have a same problem, but went to arttheraphy, showed a bit of stuffs on the internet competition on a message board, showed drawings to friends, and then went to evening course where people are nice and the lady doing it finds positive things in everyones style or drawing and says about them. Or she finds a nice drawing done by you and says about it. Or suggests something that might be useful. 4chan might be harsh with critique sometimes D: I don't know what else to tell mate but take care there and keep up the good work.

>>

Black and yellow one is the best. The red and blue one is decent too.

The black and grey one I feel you can have a better arrangement within it. The black on the side is strange and topheavy and then is tangent with the grey on the corner. I would do it over again.

The blue and yellow/green one with pink is weird. Several colours have the same values but different hues. The main contrast is that sickly green colour which is composed poorly (like the black and white one). I think this is your worst of the four. The colours are not all that unified or contrasting or interesting. The values and saturations are not well controlled either.

Guys, lets say I am half-new-beginner. I went from drawing stick figures, to more "normal" beginner level. What is your advice on what to do? I have few free hours everyday for practicing. Should I go one day with Loomis, one day do some work from observation (drawing digitally), then go for observation with pencil and paper... or should I stick for some time with an exact practice?

What are your suggestions? I am still not confident with drawing from mind, because I can draw only stick figures. But from observation, it is getting ok level. I am attaching an example.

Inking is hell, wait till you think your pencil is good or it'll just be depressing

Don't study someone else's styled sketches/art. You just end up copying their mistakes. Best studies from life, or photographs.

Otherwise if it was for fun, don't avoid drawing the face.

You still don't understand how lighting on simple forms work. Get a model of the primitives then experiment with a single light source.

The fuck is this supposed to be? Some kind of an exercise?
Just eyeball shapes, especially if they're round they don't need to fit perfectly in the perspective and can still look good.
Look up industrial design sketching on youtube.

Less details, line weight.

Shadows shouldn't be completely black.
You should work on that first.

They're not bad. I like the bottom right.

Cute. Try to define his hands and the piece of wood so the whole thing would look more grounded.

As someone who draws portraits and has taught before, I can tell you that this is much better than most people's first attempts.

For noses just remember that less is more - don't clearly define both sides of the bridge unless it's with careful and balanced shading (aka no hard lines). It's handy to decide where your light source will be and then learn what areas of the nose would cast the strongest shadows. Much of the rest can be omitted for casual sketches. As for the lips, try looking closely at some photos. See how the line of the mouth isn't really straight - it has very subtle curves to it... the give and take between the upper and lower lips. Learning how to express this, even for simple sketches, gives the mouth a believable pliancy.
