The animosity towards Pinochet among Chileans seems to stem from the feeling that he ruined a revolution.
People were generally glad that he ousted Allende and undid the course the county was going down. However, he followed that up by staying in power and using less-than-legal means to persecute his enemies (both real and perceived), all while sowing the seeds for much of the corruption we see in Chile today.
So while he may have saved Chile, he also created many lingering problems that outlasted him.
Probably just as bad was the politicization of patriotism and the military. Any nationalistic sentiment is now associated with Pinochet, so unless you're fairly right-leaning, it's considered bad to be too pro-Chile.
