I don't care for the history of the Empire after Marcus Aurelius. The Empire died in the fires of the Crisis of the Third Century, and in my eyes Constantine was merely an autocrat who took the noble - but futile - reforms of Diocletian to mould an empire in his autocratic image.
Roman general - Scipio Africanus

Constantine is a bitch. He destroyed the Roman army and security of the border with his reforms. By making the majority of the army stationed at cities that never needed defending away from the border, he increased incursions by the barbarians because there was barely anyone guarding the frontier, and he lessened the effectiveness of the actual Roman since they became decadent due to city life.
>>
>>498071
Emperors with deforms have more to prove, therefore they try harder, therefore they are more likely to be good rulers.
>>
>>503689
Im unsure of that my thought is that most of these men had to earn the throne or were given it by strokes of fortune. Claudius didnt want the throne he was content studying and learning so when he got the throne he was knowledgeable about it. Justinian rose through the ranks behind justin from farmer up so he proved himself, and micheal i also think earned it through military conquests im unsure.

MY DREAM! How has it been so far? I can't imagine you're finished yet at 26.
>>
>>500616
A sensible man, a good administrator. Filled the treasury of the empire so that Justinian can spent it on bullshit projects and conquests, former was for his fame and glory and propaganda only and latter become more costly to empire to than beneficent.

He was also I would say loved by his people. Even though he was a monophysite (at later on when he died mob demanded a "christian" emperor) I would say not being a strict Chalcedonian Orthodox but still gain respect and love is an accomplishment in it itself. He could face the angry masses and calm them down. Justinian tried to same thing pre Nika Riots, did not end up well for him.

Though this is just my personal opinion.

Whats up with Constantine being your favorite Emperor? Christian bias?
>>
>>510874
Well, for me it's because of his military prowess, length of reign, hand in the creation of the byzantine empire and overall impact on the western world. Plus, you can't understate the mass rise in Christianity when you want to talk about Yurop.
>>
>>510898
Imho Theodosius did more for Christianity and enabled it to become the domniant religion than Constantine.

I would agree, but I think that Constantine is more illustrious in acts.

Thouroughly thrashing Maxentius, Licinius and Maximian, and associating his victories with the Christian faith makes him a more glorious figure in Christian spheres, despite Theodosius being the more practical of the two.
>>
>>510933
Maybe a stepping stone but I would hardly say he made the Empire Christian. But people love a good story and they glorified and exacurated him for being the "First Christian Emperor" ignoring his Arian and Sol Invictus sympathies and other controversies surrounding "Saint Constantine". But the legend that surrounded him grew as time went on.

To add Theodosius also had a victory against a "pagan" foe in the West and Chronicles compared him to Constantine, partially due to the legend he became.
