Western Europeans outside of Iberia were barely even aware of the existence of Islam before about the 11th century. In the early Middle Ages Muslims were seen in basically the same light as the Vikings or Magyars; they were angry barbarians sent by God to punish everyone because he was bored or something.

The Umayyad were one of the few forces in the world that used heavy Calvary, and Charles Martel still wrecked them each time. It was much more than just "home field advantage".

There was no force or strong enough ruler in all of Europe to stop the invasion besides Charles Martel.
