The trial should actually be mostly playable with the plain ol' translation patch, just copy the translation script and nothing else. That means

The buttons won't be translated graphically but you can hover over them for tooltip translations. There might also be a small number of lines missing because I think older lines have been pruned from newer versions of the translation.

Yeah, this is because when you first load the save it's using resources from the previous version. By going into any menu and then back out (memories, settings, etc) you reload the main menu resource and everything should work.
