Usually the colour is manually picked. Otherwise it's not uncommon to simply select the base colour, shift the hue and then reduce the luminosity. According to HSL anyway.
As a layer blend, multiply(Ps, Sai) or shade (Sai).
There are different means to get the effect, but ideally you'd use multiply or just a plain darker colour.

Usually:
Select skin tone, shift hue to red-ish, set blend mode to multiply, done.
Otherwise, use any blush pink.
There's no one specific pink that'll work across all situations, try not to depend on one palette.

But not too much note, I'm using a 0% hardness brush because I was low on time, if you want something to look nice you'll usually want to at least start with a much harder brush and then blend it all together as you/later.
Still this method is pretty quick and doesn't look awful. There are definitely better mthods out there.

I've always found that working on doujin pages or equivalent high complexity content to be very time consuming.
To request multiple pages may very well result in few or none being done, simply due to easier requests being available.

I want to get the image in the state where the outlines are there but the rest of the colors are gone. Should manga pages be grayscale or RGB color? Also when I go to the channels and press delete I have to choose use, mode and opacity. Which ones remove everything but the outlines?

Yup that's it, just tried it in phtoshop and it made the same window you have. You can either duplicate the original black and white layer and then do the whole channel select on the duplicate, or if you only want one layer (I would make a duplicate personally) then just double click it so the lock symbol goes away.
Experiment a lot too, always helps.

As far as programs go, freeware, Gimp. Its pretty cool. and easy to use as far as i can tell. I've never used it myself , but it churns out good work. Lots of guys use sai painter. Looks legit, but again, i don't really know it at all. My best bet would be to pirate ps cd6. I use it, and it even does my dishes. I of course am firmly against such lewd and incriminating acts. The amount of personal growth that program had instilled in me can not be shattered. After a few brief weeks, these grounds will be yours to REIGHN AS KING>>4260348

I'm gonna take a guess and say the reason that the lines look soscratchy white is that whatever you did to make it transparent, you did not then reduce the line work darkness down, which can leave a bit of a mess.
I assume this because I used to do this all the damn time.
Other than that, solid job. Next on try adding some lighting to go with the shadows and see how that turns out. Keep it up!

I meant just have some highlights in general, your shadows look just fine overall.
And as for the selections, to respond to the two of you, I've tried the color select on white, it usually makes the linework a bit darker than I like/not precise enough sometimes, I usually just use the channel method I've gone over in a few places.
You can also just use multiply and plop it down if the image is straight black and white/you know what your working with layer wise. It's generally just preference at that point.

So after separating the line art (except for the multiply layer which you just plop over whatever you want, I locked the line art layer and ran a brush through them, this being the result.
Using channel select makes it much easier to do cool shit to the lineart layer later in my opinion, however the multiply layer definitely has a ton of uses as well.

I would be lying to you if I said I knew jack shit about doing line-work in phtoshop other than using the pen tool and pulling off some bullshit. There are definitely far better programs out there for line-work, even with how amazing PS is.
You could maybe do something with the pen tool but yeah, not it's strong suit at all. I believe some programs like GIMP have a stabilizer function with some pen tools that make it quicker to get good lines.

Well they're not to tricky, and their are a few different ways. An easy way to mess around with them is just make the straight flats, no shadows or highlights, and then on a seperate layer above them just try different things. For this example I just used a lasso with maybe a little bit of feather (not alot at all) and then used a very soft, large brush to get most of the color in the selected space.
You can also use the gradient tool itself, and some different layer types (overlay is a good one) for some nice easy effects/lighting and color changes.
But yeah I think you could do some good stuff.

I havent done a lot with the mixer brush and I would probably start with the default brush. Lasso tool slightly feathered, soft soft brush and just brush the edges. You can also use ctrl-H to hide the select outline, might let you see the slight variances better.
This is not of course, to say you should use hard lined shaded areas like you already can, because those are also very important for adding contrast. It just helps if you have variety, USUALLY makes the image as a whole look better.

This looks relatively simple to do. Just basic flats with shading in the areas defined by the already detailed linework. The highlights might be tricky to get the hang of but that just comes with time.
From the 4th samus to the 5th samus the saturation of the shadows (and to a lesser extent the rest of the skin) becomes more saturated in a noticeable way that definitely makes the image look a lot better even though its a subtle change.
Other than that, i generally use photoshop, but if you have any questions feel free to ask.

This is true. Certain areas with shadows will be sharper than others, and you just gotta use your judgment on where that is.
I like to use both methods. Sometimes I'll render the entire image in grayscale or with color, and then go in and add the shadows and highlights and other lighting afterwards, with strong edges in some spots and softer in others. Takes a ton more time though but the results can be worth it if it's a real nice piece of linework.
This looks like an excellent start. Don't be afraid to use more than one color for shading or highlighting too, experimenting with new shit is half the fun and randomly doing something that looks great is ha;f the fun sometimes.

Heres a good example of somethings I colored entirely with a soft brush. While it looks okay, it would probably look 10x better with some good sharp shadows and highlights in addition to what already there to really make it stand out more. Just a quick example.

Yeah ive only been using like 3 colors for dark mid light. Need to expand a bit haha. I did this one in all mixer brush. I like it but I do think it needs some straight up dark greys to really emphasis the light. The softness kinda works though since its such an intimate scene. This is WIP btw haha
Here take a look at the shadow section on >>4258775 that I posted earlier, it's got some good advice.
Shadows for the most part, almost always still have color with in them, unless they are almost pitch black. So for skin, be very careful using grey to avoid making the color washed out.
What you just posted is pretty damn nice for just throwing it together, excellent work. Think about where you want the lightsource (maybe to the top right, or not, whatever, and add some shadows from there. Still looks very nice as is though.

Yeah, Im the guy that wanted the right page colored.
The document really showed everything, I just don't know all the things I was looking at, since I never used photoshop or Sai before. I have downsyndrome when it comes to this stuff for some reason. I usually try making a luminosity mode layer over the base image, try using the brush but it never looks good and then just give up. I use the color picker tool, but the colors from another image won't work on the one I'm trying to color. The yellow turns to gray

The blog guy had the same problem with colour. His mentality was that if he used the eyedropper, then his palette was perfect.
When you work on doujinshi, the working area is usually preshaded with screentones. This is why using the exact same colours simply doesn't work.
The solution is to either adjust the palette to counteract the shading, work in a darker tone, paint above the shading/page or to redraw the lines without shading.
That is in order of effort, lowest -> highest.
Whatever the case, your problem doesn't sound like something that can be helped by watching a video, it sounds like you need to study actual colours. Instead of just picking what artists have used, try to understand why they've picked those colours.
Observe the Hue/Saturation/Value model and build relationships between base colours and shading/highlights. Usually skin shading is as described here:

But that works best only for "perfect white lighting against a realistic skin tone".
Some artists shift towards blue to make the overall composition seem colder etc, there's no one cheat here to get things to look right.
Observation will definitely improve your capabilities, but IMO you've more to gain by studying instead.
If you can look at images that have basic highlights/shading and attempt to reproduce those, the means usually reveals itself.
The blend modes I've used, or rather specifically luminosity has a few uses but is most commonly used for exactly what it sounds like. Representing the harsh brightness of light. You normally shouldn't be using it over the base image for basic flat fills, Overlay is more appropriate here.

Hm? Oh I know. It takes forever. I'm very much aware of how time consuming colouring is, especially when you want it to look good. I've spent hours on one panel before only to scrap the attempt and start over. I've worked on colouring half a doujin only for a higher resolution version to appear and have to start over (really need to finish that one day, got like two pages left).
We're shitting up the thread with this discussion, if you want to talk about this you'll have to find a different means. Until then, consider what I've said instead of presumably dismissing it as useless information.
If you have a specific problem, I can offer insight. If your problem is "how can I go from 0 to 100%?", it really is far too broad for me to comment.
If you really have been trying, then perhaps you've failed to communicate the problem you're encountering. Because from what it sounds like you just need to reconsider your colour choice rather than learn new approaches to the process.

I'm the one who posted the video. I don't have a blog or thread haha. I think I know what >>4261802 is struggling with. It comes much more down to knowledge of Photoshop in general, I think. There is a work flow with it that you have to see from start to finish then do yourself. My best advice is, when I post the start to finish video, follow along to the best of your ability. We see what you get and what you don't and go deeper from there.
