You know how when you install a typeface on your computer, and Illustrator clumps all the different weights together, so instead of choosing each weight as a separate typeface, you just choose "Helvetica" and then "Helvetica Light?"
That's because every individual OTF file has a "tag" that reads "family: Helvetica" (similar to how an mp3 might be labeled "alternative rock"). When these are fucked up (most likely as a result of being a poorly made web rip), your computer can run into errors when trying to read the font files.
Originals will never have this problem, which is why people ask for originals.

What you're talking about is not called a meta tag. That's simply called font naming... In an OTF file you have two methods of grouping styles under family names within the software that's reading the font.
Each font has to have a unique PS (postscript) Font Name, a Family Name (ie. Helvetica) and a Style Name (ie. Bold). In this naming system (for use in Word for example), there can only be 4 different Style Names, and when a family has more than four styles is must be shown as multiple families. For example, there would be Helvetica which contains regular, italic, bold, and bold italic. Then there would be Helvetica Black which contains black and black italic..etc.
The reason there can be unlimited styles under one family name in Illustrator, etc is the OT Family Name and OT Style Name, which are only used in OpenType aware applications like Illustrator.
The reason you should buy original files is because they will contain both of these naming systems and will, of course, be correct.

Sentinel by HTF is nearly identical with its "T" and some of the other characters. I would start there if you don't need an exact match.
Otherwise, it's a slab serif. It may not be part of a complete typeface but very likely is. You could use that to search for more info.

I gave you my best offer : an almost complete set of the thing. It is indeed incomplete because of the aforementioned wf-rip.
So coming back to your question: those strange folders are indeed a part of the font, as mentioned in Mark Simonson's website (see pic):
- standard fonts are in the root / front folder of the variant
- then we have S = small cap
- and finally A = alternate character
And oddly enough if you go to http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/marksimonson/proxima-nova/ you shall realize that there's — indeed — 144 fonts and that "Proxima Nova S Cond Black" & "Proxima Nova A Thin" are perfectly fine.
Just use another font if that unsettles your being

I don't know specifically how they can tell. Sometimes they can't tell. If something you make flies under the radar and few people see it, then they would obviously have no way of knowing. If you are using a $300 font to design shirts for redbubble or some other shitty site, that might throw up a red flag to some people. Also, just being a terrible designer can offer up a red flag.
When you buy a license for a font, the font foundry has a copy of the invoice to check against to see if a person or studio has legitimately purchased the font. I don't want to mislead you into thinking that you will absolutely get caught, but the possibility exists. Being caught and called out on it goes beyond financial repercussions that come with being sued. You likely won't face a lawsuit for small infractions (at least, I've never heard of a lawsuit being brought up over small infractions), but being called out on it publicly could have a negative effect on your career and reputation as a designer.
Some things to note: some of the rips of fonts that are put up in these threads aren't 100% accurate. Parts of letters or sometimes whole letters come out a bit mangled. The rippers/posters of these fonts will often give a heads-up about it. Experienced type designers will be able to look at a well known font and tell if, for example, the serifs look a little off. Putting out work with one of these mangled rips is a giveaway. From following a few type designers on twitter, I know that quite a few have eyes on sites that specialize in pirating fonts and I found out not too long ago that a major type foundry actually runs a honeypot pirate site(I don't know the site but the foundry is Monotype).

Using pirated fonts for major commercial work is a gamechanger though. It's much more likely to be noticed and, if caught, expect a lawsuit. Font-licensing is big business. With millions at stake, type foundries have to be aggressive at protecting their assets. So, yea, don't use pirated fonts for commercial work. Use them for low-key personal projects and use them to learn to build up your skills as a designer. When it comes time to do commercial work, purchase the fonts you use for it.

I'm a font enthusiast and a perfectionist. I always try to find and share the originals because I care for (1) typography per se ; (2) the people who make requests. If I doubt about the authenticity of the files, I tell, same goes for rips and partial sets.
It’s not because we're on 4chan that I’ll just give junk files or random matches because it fills one’s request. On that matter, I expect someone who’s looking for something to do the same. In my opinion, that’s a minimum when you ask and if you are serious in the work you do.

It's not that complicated : every decent font / typeface has at least a name and a creator / designer. Just be a tad more specific on what you're looking for.
I mean, come on: this thread is based on benevolence. Some might (and they’re very much welcome), but I don’t want to waste my time asking myself what version of Bodoni or Frutiger you’re looking for.

I don't see the big issue either, so lets all try not to be assholes to each other. If someone doesn't know the difference between Frutiger, Frutiger Next, and Neue Frutiger, so what? If one is complaining about this, I assume they would be able to help out the requester and direct them towards what they're looking for, because I'm sure (or at least hope) that many of people here aren't design professionals who know what exactly they want. So for Frutiger, search for Neue Frutiger and see what you can find, or even better, just license it, because it is such a beautiful face.

Adobe types with optical sizes are Arno Pro, Garamond Premier, Brioso Pro, Warnock Pro, Chaparral Pro, Cronos Pro, Kepler Std, Adobe Jenson, Nueva, Sanvito Pro, Minion Pro, Utopia Std. I highly suggest that anyone go and license these, they are amazing and should be considered for any project.
