This thread was created to prevent anons from spamming new threads, for technology questions they have.
If you are that person, post your simple/small/stupid questions here

Don't bump. This is a slow board, and will continue to be. Wait for an answer or google it.

If you see other anons posting questions outside this thread, ignore or redirect them here

I was typing and I made a mistake. I tried to hit ctrl+Z to quickly delete the last word I'd written, I know I should've just hit ctrl+backspace but it's not a habit of mine yet.
Anyway, the last word I'd written was "home" and I pressed the wrong key or keys because instead of deleting the text, it fucking autocompleted it and turned it into fucking "Homesmut" including the capital H. I know the word wasn't on my clipboard and I never even fucking knew that was a word, so it was certainly not in my history, internet or otherwise

What I want to know is, what the fuck did I press to make my text autocomplete? I am using windows 10. If any other additional information is needed I can totally share because I really want to know what happened

When buying software for a specific number of computers, how do these companies/softwares KNOW how many computers you're trying to install on?
Is it a hard drive thing? Is it an IP address thing? Will using a VPN fuck with it?

To add to this; If I by backup software that only works with one computer, how does that work? Won't I need to install it on the new computer to restore the backed-up one?
I'm looking to buy Acronis, if that helps give my question more context. I just don't want to buy it for 1 Computer and then be unable to use the software on a new one when I actually need to transfer/back up my shit.
>>
>>54160654
Which enhanced features are missing?
>>
>>54160666
You need to connect to their servers to authenticate the installation. Then they register the number of instalations...
>>
>>54160616
Naw. There was a forum somewhere(maybe here in /mu/) where a lot of people we're talking about the style, how it looked like a poster of a classic movie.
>>
>>54160692
So it's not like I said. There are more tools now to make this result. But in the 80s and 90s, there weren't.
>>
>>54160691
Seriously? So I only get to install it once?
>>
I have a bootable linux usb drive and just got done setting up a bunch of software customizations, but now I need to move it to a different flash drive.
How do I do so /g/?
>>
>>54160738
If you bought the right to 1 installation, you can do only 1 installation. Other options are to pirate, and to use free software.
>>
Is this even the place I should ask about private trackers?
>>
>>54160654
>and yes, proprietary
How do you know?
>>
>>54160779
I think this thread is more adequate:
>>>/g/ptg
>>
>>54160772
The website says 1 computer, not 1 installation. I assumed that meant I could at least uninstall it from one computer and authenticate it on another or some shit.

Acronis is computer backup software, so I don't understand how it can work with only one installation. You install it, back up your files regularly, but if your computer/hard drive dies and you need to back it all up to a new one, you'd need to buy another copy of it just to restore the images? That sounds retarded.
>>
>>54160800
Thank you.
>>
>>54160806
I assume you can install and uninstall on 1 computer as many times as you want. But not replace the registered computer.

To solve this question, you need to ask directly to the company, or read the license terms.
>>
>>54160838
Damn. I was hoping it would be some simple, universal thing. Guess I'll have to go read through their shit.
>>
>>54160806
>You install it, back up your files regularly, but if your computer/hard drive dies and you need to back it all up to a new one, you'd need to buy another copy of it just to restore the images? That sounds retarded.
DRM IS retarded, man. Sim City (2013) couldn't be played, even on singleplayer, because the company decided it wanted to check every second if your game is original and authenticated, so you couldn't play it even on singleplayer, if there was no internet connection.

I have a usb flash drive.
I want to do the following things with it:
I want it to be bootable, give me a grub menu and list out the OS I have installed on it, and I want them to be persistent. It'll probably be Ubuntu, Mint, and Win 10. Another thing I'd like to do is have a partition that mounts like a regular usb drive when plugged in.
Is there a piece of software that I could use to help me set this up? Anyone doing anything similar?

It's very controversial around here to recommend a browser, but I use Firefox. If that doesn't run well enough, try Chrome. Some get better performance with one while some get better performance with the other.

In the process of building my very first PC and things were going great until it came to actually putting the motherboard in the Corsair 200R. The less time I leave the motherboard out in the open, the better so I need a swift response.

1. What the heck is up with that nub among the standoffs in the Corsair 200R? Can't be twisted off and I get the feeling that leaving it be will short out everything. If it's supposed to be removed, how do I go about doing that?

2. What the heck are those prong things on the inside of the I/O shield? They make a dry fit way too much of a hassle.

Depends on the size of the drives
Larger drives means more time to rebuild the array after a failure, meaning more likely to have another failure within that time frame.
>>
>>54164414
Addendum:
Also number of drives
Having more drives in an array also increases the likelihood of a double failure

Randomly, some Youtube videos just constantly buffer after a couple min. This onlly happens at low resolution though, if I bump it up to 720 or above it's fine. I just don't really feel the need to listen to audio only shit in the background on youtube at that kind of resolution.

Firefox and Flash are up to date. I've got 200mb down speed.

What kind of difference would a discrete graphics unit make to a laptop? specifically modern units. Aside from being able to play games, is there any benefit to having one? I'm a CS/EE(CE) major if that's important. What about the downsides beside higher price?

There are a number of GPU accelerated tasks but most are not particularly relevant to CS/EE
Downside would be higher power consumption/lower battery life

I have Asus Maximus VIII Ranger as my motherboard and I'm trying to install Windows 7 on it, with little success.

My processor is the new i7-6700K if that matters.

I'm getting my USB devices to work during the install, but it still complains that it cannot find the optical drive drivers so it won't proceed with the installation. What's quite interesting is that I don't have one connected to my computer, since my old one was still IDE and the new motherboard doesn't quite support that :)

Now apparently this is quite the general error message when some drivers are missing. Is there any way to find out what drivers are missing?

I made a boot-able USB install stick with the Windows USB/DVD Download Tool.

The user manual for the motherboard had some guides, but they dealt with the USB 3.0 driver issues only.

tl;dr: Windows 7 installation on skylake processor via USB needs some drivers (for ????) and won't install.

Any ideas?

I'm about to embark on a large PC upgrade, where a motherboard, a CPU, a graphics card and quite possibly a PSU will get replaced. I currently have a working 500W PSU. I'm trying to understand if I could keep it for the upgraded build, with the new GPU and all.
The graphics card in question is one recommended to me in a previous thread, which is Gigabyte's GV-R939WF2-8GD. I looked up its wattage, and Gigabyte "recommends" a 600W PSU. Every other site just copy-pasted the recommendation. I also tried calculating the power consumption on a PSU calculator and it gave me less than 500.

>Is that recommendation a solid requirement?
>Does it apply to a single-card configuration, or does it assume a crossfire configuration is at hand?

I'm looking for a coding font.

What I want:
1 Legibility (l <=> I, 0 <=> O etc)
2 Pixel perfect (all vertical and horizontal strokes align to the pixel grid)
3 NOT a bitmap font, meaning it can still be antialiased
(4) A bold variation would be really cool, but it's not that important.

Pic related is an illustration of what I'm looking for. Left the vectorized glyph, right renderings. I would just do it myself, but I want to check whether somebody has done it already.

I've borrowed an installation image from a friend. The USB boots into the installation menu just fine but it seems that Windows 7 image a bit of a problem with the new Intel 170 chipset when installing via USB. There are a lot of half-arsed methods of getting around that but their success rate is low.

Even though it does boot from USB, you need to have the USB 3.0 drivers on the USB/installation image regardless. My best bet is https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25476/Windows-7-USB-3-0-Creator-Utility later today. At worst you can get an internet DVD drive from somewhere and burn a DVD with the Windows 7 installation. This seems to be the image http://pefel.net/forum/thread/223/windows-7-ultimate-sp1-x32-x64-original-dvd-iso-updates-2016-torrent-download-free-activator-tested/

This isn't an issue with Windows 8/10.

>>54165585
You don't need a 600W PSU if you're going for a single-GPU system. Most of the time a 500W PSU is solid if you don't plan to overclock your CPU/GPU/CF/SLI.

For Corsaid, CS~RM < CX < HXi

Top tier PSUs include the G2/Toughpower series. Seasonic/Antec also make great PSUs.

Can I keep my PSU in the new configuration? What happens if the PSU is not capable of supplying the wattage the system requires, what are the signs?
>>
>>54165885
>CX500
It's under requirements. But might work?
>>
>>54165885
Use http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator to see how your build fares in terms of power requirements. I think the CX500 will do just fine. You pay good money for long-lasting power supplies and the CX is alright. Your system would. The 390 is around ~250-300W. You have sufficient headroom for everything else. Be sure that the 12V rail has the proper amperage first.

If the PSU, assuming it's a good onem is not capable of supplying the wattage it'll shut down. If you get a shit/cheap PSU it might fry your components and/or explode/fire hazard.

I don't really understand what you're saying. You do know that you can buy individual computer components and basically build your own PC right? I don't know the price of the iMac but you can basically buy the exact same components (save maybe the motherboard which is inconsequential really when you're talking high-end -- heck my $150 motherboard has 1x thunderbolt + 4xUSB 3.0 + 1x usb 3.1) making up the system. I'm p sure it would cost less. You can buy a pre-built PC but that's pointless.

You don't buy apple computers for their performance really.

I hope you get what I mean. Pic related.

I have a very important assignment i'm currently working on and for this i urgently need a good networking simulation tool which also lets you customize all the client/server/router settings regarding standard gateway IP's and all that other stuff - Something close to the IMUNES thingy but except that it should also auto-correct and/or suggest proper IP value inputs for all the gateways and so on if you just paste a specific IP range for it to work with in the first place.

I really can't get my head wrapped around this stuff (or maybe the material i'm reading is just badly written) and all those online IP calculators won't get me anywhere here as long as i don't even know the proper gateway configs so as to faciliate proper ping responses in said virtual network. Tried looking for gateway calculators but had no luck in that regard either

Any help would be extremely appreciated, doesn't matter if it's free or paid software i'll take it all really

>>
>>54167589
500-600W Gold-rated PSU is a better investment if you don't plan to SLI/CF since the energy savings over the course of a year (or its entire lifespan) will net you whatever amount you're saving on buying a less efficient power supply and more. Ditto on the opposite; whatever immediate savings you're making by going with a cheaper PSU will be offset (and more) by the electricity costs.

Fractal Design S and/or s340 for the case for ~$60-70. You can get a cheap cougar case for like $30.

Allright, thanks mate! I'll see if I can squeeze a Gold-rated PSU in there since the Corsiair is only bronze rated.

I made a boot-able USB install stick with the Windows USB/DVD Download Tool and Rufus.

The user manual for the motherboard had some guides, but they dealt with the USB 3.0 driver issues only.

tl;dr: Windows 7 installation on skylake processor via USB needs some drivers (for ???? -- can't be for the SATA controller because it does recognize the drives, and it can't (???) be the USB controller because I'm booting off USB and using a USB keyboard/mouse) and won't install.

Any ideas?

Hello fellow users, I have a question.
So I bought a windows 7,8/8.1, and vista IDE/SATA Adapter to transfer my OS to an SSD (Samsung 850 EVO), but my computer updated to windows 10 without me doing so. Is the adapter still usable?

Is IT worth it? I have a lot of fun building computers and I love my computer and tinkering around wiht it and getting new hardware/checking out new hardware, but I could give less of a fuck about networking/server system/software and I'm worried if I tried to study it I just would lose all interest and waste my time.

Just tryin to see if /g/ has any similar people. I'm 24 and worried about my lack of career so IT seems logical since I enjoy computers andworking on them but obviously got a ways to go.

IT is a Hufflepuff field you go into when you're not able to do something better. It's my plan B since I already have experience and certs and am currently employed in such a position at 0 hours per week so I'm still gaining XP to put on a resume.

So now I'm wondering how I convince myself to study when I'm not at work since sitting and watching videos is boring as fuck.

trying to set up a Medion desktop I haven't used in 3 years. It won't turn on. The fan starts up, and it makes some sounds that seem like it's booting up, but it cuts off after like 5 seconds. After that the fan starts back up and keeps going but it doesn't boot and the monitor detects nothing. Also the powerlights never come on at all. I've tried unplugging everything and holding the power button for 30 seconds and it still won't work. I'm going to try opening it up maybe tonight or tomorrow and cleaning the insides (although I've never seen the inside of a desktop before so it could be disastrous.

I'm not all that hopeful I can fix it mysself, but what's the most I can do before sending it off to professionals? And way I can do some kind of diagnostics? Absolutely any suggestions are welcome no matter how simple they are. I haven't tried anything other than what I've described.

Thanks lads. I'll try get the model no. of the desktop for you even if it's irrelevant. You're saints.

Pic kinda similar to what I'm looking at.
