If you are serious about switching to Linux, use it exclusively for 2 weeks.
Avoid booting to windows for that period of time, or you are likely to start retreating back to it instead of getting used to linux as your new home and working on making it feel comfortable
You can safely experience installation process and the basic usage through a virtual machine

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I have been trying to emulate the look of Windows 2000 with Openbox/LXDE. Is there a way to change the size of titlebar buttons? No matter how I modify the bmp images the icons appear the same size.

I'm pretty sure that Openbox uses .xbm.

This infographic includes nonfree software and causes two kinds of problems:
If you follow it, you may install and use nonfree software.
It gives people the wrong idea of what the goal is.
The first problem is a direct problem: it affects users, if they install the nonfree software. However, the second problem is the more important one, because it affects the community as a whole.
The "artist" of this infographic doesn't say, “I apologize for the presence of nonfree programs. I don't know what possessed me to include them. For next release I will keep my mind on freedom.” If he did, he would have less of a bad influence.
Instead, he generally presents the nonfree software in his infographic as positive; he says that the goal is “the best possible user experience”, or something like that, rather than freedom. In other words, he leads people to place convenience above freedom — working directly against our campaign to make freedom the primary goal.
The fact that this infographic doesn't deliver freedom is why I don't endorse them and ask the "artist" to go back to reddít.
Let's all ignore shitty apps guy and use this instead: >>53525229

urxvt looks like barf out of the box and you need to go to read up on its config quite a lot to get it usable
and in the end theres no obvious benefit that others dont have
>>53525763
It only takes like 3 options to make it not shit, here's my very short config.URxvt.background: Black
URxvt.foreground: White
URxvt.scrollBar: false
URxvt.scrollBar_right: true
URxvt.perl-ext-common: default,matcher,selection-to-clipboard
URxvt.url-launcher: /usr/bin/palemoon
URxvt.matcher.pattern.1: \\bhttps?:\/\/(www.youtube.com|youtube.com|youtu.be)/\\S*
URxvt.matcher.launcher.1: /usr/bin/mpv
URxvt.matcher.button: 1
URxvt.urgentOnBell: true
URxvt.font: xft:Source Code Pro Medium:pixelsize=20:antialias=true:hinting=true,xft:Everson Mono:pixelsize=20:antialias=true:hinting=true
And over half those lines aren't for making it pretty.

whenever there is a question in title the answer is NO

In what way is it correct? It was made an hour later and has the same OP pasta.
How can I block ad domains with the host file? I've done it in Windows but can't get it. Using Mint btw
>>53525899
what did you have in host in windows?
>>53525973
Long txt file with a bunch of ad domains, from win2002.mpvs.org/hosts.txt

literally the same way, the hosts files is at /etc/hosts

I just installed Antergos which is basically Arch (it uses all the official repos and AUR if you enable it) but without all the hassle.
I mean I installed pure Arch once but fuck that. Now I have Antergos with i3 and I am happy.
>>53526198
Isn't the only difference the install process?
>>53526198
antergos offers i3?
and guy who uses i3 cant follow wiki?
>>53525875
>has the same OP pasta.
no it doesn't. it also doesn't link to fucking reddit and doesn't recommend unnecessary proprietary software.
>>53526250
Ok yeah it's different, was similar at first glance so didn't notice.
But... oh no 'muh proprietary software'. Whatever gets the job done. If the best tool for the job is proprietary so be it.
>>53526248
You have to install it from the Arch repos, it's not offered during the install process.
>>53526080
I pasted the txt there but it didn't work
>>53526274
>If the best tool for the job is proprietary so be it.
look at shitty apps guys list. there is a reason we call him that way since last fall.
>>53526248
This should be changed to advise btrfs or at least offer it as a consideration for / partition.
>>53526241
Yeah, when you install you can select which DE you want and you get like 6 to choose from so no need to have separate ISOs for different DEs.
>>53526248
just use arch, antergos is shit
>>53526301
Yeah there's lots I don't agree with in that image but I meant it more as a general rule.
>>53526277
then what do you choose during the installation?
>>53526310
Ah. Kind of handy for noobs I guess, desu I don't see why not just install the minimal arch installation and install the DE/WM from there.
Do you HAVE to choose a DE when you install? Because that's really lame if you want none of the above and have to uninstall it later.
>>53526334
You choose your DE and then "pacman -S i3-wm i3status i3lock" in any given terminal.
>>53526308
It's from fucking 2015, OP is a shitty troll from reddit that deserves all hate he gets. just use the beginner guide or don't use arch at all.
>>53526332
If it's about getting the job done you won't have problems using only free software apart from maybe a few drivers. the only reason to use other proprietary software in this time and age is convenience (aka laziness).
>>53526363
Yeah I guess you have to. I just have it to have a stable back up system for when I go through the Arch install process again in case of any errors on my side.
Guys i need some advice here, i need an option like "draw window while dragging" on Debian
I use xfce and cinnamon but i cant figure how i make the windows behave like win7 when i move them.
i just need a empty framework when i move the windows, i dont like to see all the content moving around.
any indeas?

I am not all that smart but I am trying to learn how to config i3 properly but man what a bastard it is if you are still kind of new to it. Still trying to figure out how to make Conky use i3 but I'll persevere.
Still I managed to figure out how to put up the wallpaper at least in i3. I am loving how light it is and when I go back to GNOME I just die inside.
>>53526434
its arch
same as antergos
at least it feels like it has community and actually people working on it
antergos feels like installer for arch that begs for money
>>53526493
I think antergos is shit too, don't get me wrong. Actually it's worse because it's fucking pointless.

This isn't a terrible starting point for noobs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1I63wGcvU4&list=PL5ze0DjYv5DbCv9vNEzFmP6sU7ZmkGzcf&index=1
Wallpaper in i3 is easy, install feh then put
exec_always --no-startup-id feh --bg-scale ~/Pictures/wallpaper.png
in your config. Obviously change to point to your wallpaper.
>>53526484
whats the problem with conky?
this is in my ~/.config/i3/config
>exec conky -c ~/.config/conky/conkyrc_main.conf
>exec conky -c ~/.config/conky/conkyrc_calendar.conf
or whatever you have..
maybe the problem is that arch uses latest conky, the 1.10 version
>>53526541
Yeah I got the feh part figured out so I am all good on that.
I just want the snazzy looking bars and other shit I see people posting on dotshare but tweaking their configs to my machine is a bitch.

Yeah Arch has 1.10.
Use dwb, the minimalist web browser.
GPL, lightweight, keyboard driven, configurable, less dependencies than luakit, comes with a built-in ad blocker.

Why does the Arch guide recommend systemd for UEFI systems? I have Ubuntu with GRUB and it works fine. Also, if I already have GRUB for duel booting, I'm guessing I can skip that step and not install it? Will it automatically detect Arch when I reboot?

you dont need any other packages as its part of the systemd
its also wikis go-to recommendation
