The disease begins.

Really pleased with my X220, and I just ordered a T420 with a broken screen, since I have an M14X to gut for a replacement
>>
>>47652777
In the last week I've bought an x60, two t400, a t61 and an x31. Help.

>tfw we're no better than macfags

X220 is my daily driver, T520 is the family laptop, and the T43 I just got yesterday is my side laptop. The T43 doesn't have an HDD and my SATA II ultrabay caddy is still in the mail.

Why the fuck did IBM and Lenovo put one RAM slot under the fucking keyboard and one on the underside on so many of their laptops? It was a royal pain in the ass to upgrade my T43's RAM because I have to take out the whole keyboard to get to the primary slot.
>>
>>47653009
>tfw I'm an ex-MacFag

But at least I get to fuck around with the hardware and have a keyboard with a delete key.

I actually have an old EliteBook with the ram position like that. I was so confused at first.

/tpg/ anons and tripfags always talk about the X1 panel swap for the T420/30 but I have NEVER EVER seen a pic, webm or video of it in these threads or anywhere on the internet.

I'm not doubting all you cockbreaths and I have no plans on getting a T series chinkpad because I'm pretty satisfied with the X-series. I just want to see it in action nawmsayin?

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but an mbp/hackintosh is better in this situation. If the program you are planning to run is exclusively windows, then the w series would be great in terms of power, but you'll be the laughing stock cause "lol thinkpad no mac".

Yeah they can do some crazy shit. I also remember a guy on the German forums getting a 1080P screen on a T420, had to do some hardware modding as well modifying the bios for it to work. A X1 swap is a joke compared to that.

There's not even a simple guide for this.

I don't think it was even specified which Dell panel was used in the mod, other than the limited spec sheet that was given in that pic.
>>
Poorfag NEET without their own computer here (desktop died, parts too old and shit to warrant salvaging). Figure I'd get a used laptop since new ones are expensive and consumer-grade shit.

Which ThinkPad should I get if I'm on an extreme budget (<= £200)? It'll be for near 24/7 use so preferably something with a big screen but not high DPI since they look like shit.
>>

>>
do all x220/230s suffer from the loose top lid edge issue?

>>47655329
yeah unluckily i've got a TN with an already wobbly lid. is there a feasible way to swap an IPS panel in?
>>
Should I get an X220 or an X201?

Pros of the X220: IPS screen (potential). better hardware, better battery life
Cons: Dat 16:9 Screen

Pros of the x201: more room on screen, can upgrade to an AFFS apparently
Cons: Worse hardware, worse battery life

Not sure how much of a difference it makes. Most I'll do is probably stream music + type papers or just use it when I want some portable access to the internet. I'm grabbing something else with an IPS to be my entertainment laptop. (no older keyboard tho)

very low price for the performance you can get. and they are sturdier than average. only downsides is they look archaic a.k.a. "ugly," if you care about that sort of thing. and the modern ones have questionable design choices and build quality.

>>
>>47656825
ThinkPads worth buying:
T, W and X series (avoid any X1** models though)

ThinkPads not worth buying:
E, L series because they are sticking a thinkpad badge and a trackpoint on to a shitty laptop
>>
>>47656840
>(avoid any X1** models though)
I have yet to see a reason why X1's are bad laptops. I understand why you don't consider them ThinkPads, but besides being ~200 dollars overpriced (like literally every other ultrabook on the market) I don't see the issue.

>>47656825
The answer is no. If you want a brand new laptop go for a t450s or an X1. There are literally no other lenovo laptops worth buying than those two.

T500/510/520, whatever you can find at your price limit.

Also at least go for a 1680x1050 or 1600x900 screen even if you aren't a DPI fanatic, I upgraded from 1280x800 to 1680x1050 and it's cramazing.

Also if you game at all get a GPU model. The GPUs aren't good but they're better than integrated.

Don't flame the fuck outta me for asking but, is a ThinkPad x100e worth having at this point in time? I can get one in great shape but it's an original one, manufactured way back in May of 2010, no functional issues, no major wear and tear on the body, everything works as expected, original 6-cell battery (didn't get a chance to check on the wear level but I'll do that later).

I know it's an older piece of hardware but, as a ThinkPad fan I find myself wanting to grab it just to say I've got one even in spite of it being a low-end device nowadays (well, to be honest it was ALWAYS a low-end device anyway).

Pricing like $60, might be able to talk 'em down to $50 or whatever.
>>
>>47657194
Ebay. I think you'll have to replace the entire palmrest though.

Is a X220 with 8gb memory and 160gb SSD worth €300?

>TN panel
>>
>>47652777
Was that one of the $100 ones?

I was thinking about buying one of those and just leaving the broken screen in it and using it as personal server.
>>
>>47657478
What did you expect when you went for the newest model on the X series...

We generally deal with older thinkpads so pricing won't be too bad.

>>47657783
It's a netbook with a trackpoint, you can't quite call it a thinkpad.

>>47657850
Seems alright, although is it specified what kind of SSD is that? I think with that capacity it might be a mechanical drive.
>>
Anybody buy from arrow direct on ebay? They have a t430 for about tree fiddy, with a 250gb ssd(I checked the brand its okay), 8gb ram, 1600x900 panel, 9 cell, i5-3320m. Should I go for it? Adding an ssd and extra ram to a t420 would bet me about the same price.
Note: I don't care about the chucklet keys.
>>
>>47657904

Well if you're gonna adopt that attitude, there hasn't been a proper ThinkPad since the T61 days, so there.
>>
>>47657850
You can get a better deal, but it's not horrible. If you want USB3.0 you'll have to look for an i7 model. I'd also wait for an IPS model to pop up.

>>47657904
It's most likely the stock Intel SATAII SSD that came configurable with the X220 when ordering from lenovo. My X220 has the same SSD.

>>
>>47657953
I don't quite get you, the x100e/x120e and so forth are netbooks with thinkpad branding and a trackpoint. Proper thinkpads are T/W/X series only (as far as newer ones go).

>>47657964
Good to learn a little, i knew it came with SSD's but didn't know what brand. Although the x220 is capable of SATA III speeds.

>>47657968
>>47658013
Your spelling is a little terrible, but let's get to the point;
The T450s is slimmer as the name implies, much lighter as a result and has an excellent IPS panel. Build quality is the same as the earlier T440s and T440 respectably.

Now as far as i know T450 can achieve a higher overall run time because it supports a larger battery (correct me if im mistaken)

It wasn't. $210ish, but the screen was only "broken" in the sense that it had a dead pixel. It did come with 8GB RAM though, so it's a better deal than most on the 'Bay

Comparing my X230 to X200 side by side the difference is suprisingly little. Like half a centimetre less vertically and one centimetre more horizontally. Well again, you can get an older Thinkpad with a larger ssd and an i5 (which I bet is more powerful than that i3 I bet) in your price range.

Just throwing out ideas though. If you are set on the T450 go for it.

You can't negotiate on ebay. I mean c-can you?

Awesome. Thanks for the advice, went with the X220. Found an okay deal on it.

I bought the fucker. I reason that if I can't clean up the touchpad, that is only a 6 buck replacement from what I could tell, the keyboard should only run me ~30-40 bucks, and upgrading the ram by 4 GB should be pretty cheap as well.

Investing in a model with an IPS screen and upgrading it was more important than having the rest and upgrading the screen myself, because now I don't have to deal with finding a reseller that won't give me something with dead pixels.

Cheers, gentlemen. I'm going to pick up a yoga 14 as well tomorrow. Set for life.

X220 and X230 can't take 9.5mm drives

and yes, SSHD = hybrid drives

hybrid drive =/= dual drive

Are there any decision charts for a newfag? There are too many models.

I've got an ST2000LM003 in my X230. It was a *very* tight fit but it's in there. Not sure I'll ever get it out!

The sticky.

>Figure out if you want X type, T Type, or W type.
>Okay, do I need newer hardware? If yes, get a xx40 or xx50
>I don't really need newer hardware. In fact, Iwant a solid machine, and I can upgrade what I need
>Get an xx20 or an xx30, swap out screen for better one if T420 or T430
>Do I want a bigger screen? If yes, get an x5xx. If not, Get an x4xx

There you go champ.I'd rec the T430, even though I don't have one. Seems like a solid laptop in general. Dumb keyboard layout though, so might consider a T420 or even an X220 if you want something more compact

Thanks. What are you opinions on T vs X series?
>>
>>47663103
T-series bigger, cheaper, have Ultrabays which can take a CD/DVD drive or a second hard drive caddy.

X-series smaller, lighter, longer battery life.
>>
>>47663103
Depends on your needs. One is portable, the other is slightly less portable.

not so easy

X series also have soldered CPUs. T series have upgradable CPU, you can drop quad core into the t420

Same here t420 unaffected

Just bought a T420 off ebay for $220.

This'll be the first time I've owned more than one computer at once in my sad life. I'm looking forward to having good portable computing power.

Can be solved by sticking any expresscard thing into the slot.

Officially it supports 8GB, but many people have reported that it works with 16GB

Is there any reason someone would go for a T450 with a weaker processor, instead of a T430 wih a stronger processor?

>tfw waiting for Thinkpad w700 WUXGA LCD Screen 2 CCFL from USPS
>Says it supposed to be delivered today and in transit but it's 8:00PM
>I fucking hate USPS

doesn't even matter if I get it today anyways because I have to wait ~2 weeks for the inverter that I ordered from ebay that's shipping from china.
>>
>>47664831
No, it "officially" supports 16GB because the CPU supports it.

It was only offered with up to 8GB at the time though because 8GB DDR3 modules were new and very expensive.
>>
>>47660634
it really depends on the cpu, as you could look up the specs for the cpu and see what it supports.

My T61p's GPU finally shit the bed (thanks, nVidia!) I also have a newer laptop, but it's not that nice and I've had so much driver trouble I want to get rid of it.

It's been a while since I've shopped for a Thinkpad or a laptop in general, but what could I expect for $500 these days? Pretty much my only absolute requirement is a >=1080p display.
>>
>>47660591
still much better than the typical consumer hardware. Keep in mind that you hear the issues more for business lines because they are actually needed for something besides facebook.

Only T series without 's' suffix have socketed processors. Also does the T440p

3-year onsite warranty. Although you can find some used T430's with warranty.

>>

has somebody managed to fit a decent IPS screen in a T430/420?
>>
>>47666782
Read the wiki, you can get an X1 carbon on them I believe.
>>
>>47665034
The older chassis they used on the T series had bigger and more robust steel hinges, AKA they could survive more torture.

In other terms, the T430 is overall more sturdy then the T440/T450. Models with "s" suffix have slightly worse build quality and thermal issues (overheating+heat spreading)

Just buy the T430 and if it doesn't have a SSD throw one in yourself you dope.
>>
>>47665176
T520 if you want the older layout keyboard, T530 otherwise.

I think with your money the best you could try to get is a W520, if you're lucky enough to score one with a FHD panel.

What's the best linux distro to run on a T60? I'm using Debian right now, but I'm not very happy with it. My neckbeard skills are regrettably lacking, so pls no gentoo or arch. I just want something I can use for programming and general productivity.
