Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

2 days-2 weeks, depends on the package category.
No delay for security patches.
Also: Nice meme. Their webdeb surely should be fired, but the distro is pretty good.

So then why not just use Arch and have no delay? It just seems pointless.

XUbuntu here.
I have a TV plugged into HDMI and 2 dell monitors plugged daisy chain into 1 display port. When on my linux partition if my monitors go to sleep Linux completely forgets they ever existed and deletes panels I made for them etc. Also happens if I boot into my partition with only the HDMI TV on. Anyway to avoid this? Other than turn off the monitors going to sleep setting.

Said folder is in my $PATH.
Said folder is in my $PERL5LIB.
There is a pm file that all the other scripts run off of, the settings.
When i try to execute it in a folder that is not the folder the scripts are located in, it errors out saying it cannot find the pm file.It lists the folder path in the lib folders in the error.

Actually I've used Linux for over 2 years now and know well how to use the Unix shell. However, it is absolutely retarded to think that everything is better done in a CLI environment.

Who the fuck thinks organising pictures, for example, is better with shell commands? Sure CLI is better for a lot of things, but whoever thinks it's absolutely better in every circumstance should really kill themselves (like the guy you're replying to)

Extracting and creating archives is nothing like organizing photos.
>>
>>55609789
You may want to open a readme file without extracting the entire archive. You may want to only extract certain files. You may want to choose whether to create a new file for the extracted archive. You may just want to fucking drag and drop the contents into a file manager.

If I download an archive, I want to open it from a file manager, extract it and be done with it without opening a terminal.

Ever heard of "user experience"?

Finally a good question.

See if you can make the corners of the windows slightly rounder (I haven't used Unity in years so I wouldn't know how to do this there offhand).

Mate is a whole other desktop environment so the point of installing it would be if you don't like the current one.

The profiles you chose or didn't choose will dictate which flags are enabled by default. You can and should manage your own according to what you want or don't want in each (main) package. I'm using GNOME's archive manager, file-roller. It supports these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archive_Manager and does some basic operations via CLI if you want.

You can also check these out: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/List_of_applications/Utilities#Graphical_2

Although I gotta say, if you aren't familiar with using CLI, you should. Check out the book TLCL in the OP (it's free). And sorry if some people are dicks, but it is to be expected on the internet.

Sorry for phrasing the question really badly, I was really just asking for impressions on graphical archive managers. I've been using engrampa, which I believe is a fork of file-roller, but it has some minor glitches when opening certain archives - probably due to an outdated or incompatible package on Arch. Peazip doesn't seem to work most of the time and xarchiver seems to unzip some archives really slowly for some reason.

I might actually try file-roller next, although I try my hardest to avoid GNOME applications because I hate the fat window borders on Xfce

Arch doesn't support ppc64, arm, sparc, mips. Arch doesn't have a musl and uclibc releases, so you have no choice on Arch.
Install Gentoo uclibc testing + wayland, and you on bleeding edge, if you program on C, learning uclibc is much faster than glibc, also uclibc 2 times smaller and faster. glibc wich used by most of modern distos simply sucks, it's deprecated.

Is there any pressing need? If you ask me, you should stick with whatever feels most comfortable to you. The release model is probably the largest difference, so it might be a better idea to first try Debian Testing or Unstable first. Contrary to what people here might claim, using Arch doesn't make you a better poweruser.

Dunno about Debian, but Arch has great repos and almost every Linux software can be found in AUR. The only program/package that I've looked for but haven't found is a script that turns codeblocks project files into makefiles.

Pacman and AUR put Arch so far above the rest of the distros. It's so easy to get any software you need; I don't think I've ever needed to build a package and

I was told you learn more about Linux as a whole from installing and maintaining an Arch system. But if I can do the same by fiddling around with Debian then there is no need.

Also people say Arch is bleeding edge and pacman and the AUR is far superior.
>>
>>55611656
Installing it is more of a learning experience than using the Debian installer (though the "difficulty" of installing Arch is extremely overstated). Maintaining an Arch system is actually pathetically easy because the package manager is so well done. You'll learn just as much fiddling around with any distro as you will with Arch.

I can't get into the file system of Linux.
On Windows I liked to organise all my HDDs and folders neatly. I would download certain programs on my SSD, others on an HDD. Keep X on this HDD and Y on another.
It's all super easy to do in Windows but on Linux everything is on /home or something and if I download something with a package manager, I can't choose the installation directory and organise things the way I want to.

Is there something I'm missing or is this just how it's done on Linux?
>>

Just mount / to your ssd and /home to hdd while intallation. Every else storage you connect will also have unique mountpoints so you can manage your files as you want.

under /tmp temporal files, it gets deleted everytime you restart

mount any HD, or whatever under /media/.

The rest of the folders is for your system, let your distribution handle it.

advantages? easier to upgrade and mantain, shared libs, better multiuser and security. no fucking regedit and much more.

The filesystem abstracts over devices.

You can choose to have your /home mounted on a HDD and your /usr and /bin on a SSD

Why NVIDIA drivers fuck up something graphics while a distro boot ls up?

In Ubuntu it made the Ubuntu title low res, in Fedora made that small logo disappear and made some ugly three lines instead.

How can I fix these things without removing NVIDIA?

Having all binaries in /usr/bin is a fucking blessing. In general having a centralised directory structure for libraries means you don't have to bundle all libraries with every program. This is why programs take like 10 times more space on Windows.

I've installed Linux on a 60GB partition on my SSD (alongside W7). However, I've mounted /var and /home on different partitions. I've got over 1400 packages installed and I'm only using 13GB of the 60 GB partition aside from the swapfile. You'll never need to create a different partition for programs, except if you install a lot of games (Steam installs games in your home directory by default anyways)

You can create as many mountpoints in /mnt/ as you want and put all of your regular files there, if you have more than one HDD.

Hey guys,

I did it, frienderoonies.
Windows 7 died on me yesterday so i decided to take the plunge into Linux.

the reason I stick to kubuntu (or mint KDE) is because I am not a linux guru, nor I want to spend days trying to make shit work. if I get a problem on mint/*buntu, the large userbase almost guarantees that someone has had my problem before and found a solution.

Hello guys, my linux carreer is pretty short (In two months from Win10 to Ubuntu to Arch) and I would like some advice on what distros to try. Going from Ubuntu to Arch made me learn lots of things, so Arch of course feels a lot better than Ubuntu to me now because I like the idea of building my own stuff and knowing what's up in my system. However I feel like I am missing out on some of the other options (fedora, openSuSe, debian,...) and I have also heard that Arch has pretty shit practices in many regards.

Firstly, what's so bad about arch, both the OS itself and the organization/structure?

Secondly: What would you recommend for a comfy but customizable experience on linux?

Thanks in advance!

Can a good hacker still compromise my laptop?

Someone told me if I use Ubuntu I don't even need antiviruses and will be free of malware.

But then I thought that a lot of websites are getting compromised every day and most of them run on Linux servers right?

Does that mean a good hacker still infiltrate into a laptop running only Ubuntu? (Installing trojans or rootkits for example?)
