What's the purpose of this monitor format?
>>
Is it easy to dual boot Windows with OS X on a hackintosh build?
>>
>>55608164
usually they have a pivot on the back so you can display them in portrait.
>>
>>55608164
these days's it's nice as a side monitor in portrait if you need a second screen and don't need it to take up a lot of space
>>

>>

>>55608236

The one I have is 4:3 and have a pivot. (GOAT for reading pdfs)

There are such monitors (1024*1280) in my lab but I have no idea why they have such a design. Also, what's the purpose of putting this one in portrait, it's almost a square?
>>
>>55608266
the height is nice for coding, for example. or reading a website. why not use your imagination?
>>
What's the best way to check if all my drivers are up to date? Any program I can download that will check for me? Also, how do I stop my system from asking which OS I want to boot at startup? The options are windows 10 and 8, I just want 10, how do I get rid of the 8 option?
>>
>>55608277
Then a 4:3 in vertical position isn't better?
I am quite puzzled by what motivated the choice of this ratio.
>>
>>55608300
stop using latest drivers for no reason, they tend to fuck shit up. only get the latest drivers if you read about issues with your previous one or if something doesn't work
>>
>>55608311
the height of portrait mode
>choice of this ratio
what do you mean? the design? the fact that someone purchased this recently? what the fuck do you mean?
>>
>>55608332
The design.
4:3 is like a sheet of paper
16:9 is the same ratio as television and most of video media
But I can't get what motivated this specific choice.
>>
>>55608318
Thanks lad, I'd still like to know if fheres a way to check all out of date drivers at once.
>>
>>55608371
are you 12? 4:3 is old as fuck. it was created in the time when little millenials like you didn't watch movies on a fucking computer all day, they were meant for work. it was also the same aspect as most televisions at that time. are you this fucking dense? i know this is a stupid questions thread, but come the fuck on
>>
>>55608371
You've already answered your question, 4:3 is more like a piece of paper.

>>
>>55609574
So I think you have 2 problems here. The first is that the 300mbps you're expecting requires that you be within range of BOTH the 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz bands. 2.4 reaches a lot farther so that would explain you getting good reception there. 5 has less range and much less ability to pass through objects. So you're getting your 150 on the 2.4 only. The other thing is that extenders cut your bandwidth in half, because they have to re transmit everything within the same spectrum as soon as they receive it. I would throw out the extenders unless you absolutely need them. They're not an ideal solution to anything, and bring your whole wireless network down on their frequency. Maybe consider lan over electrical or another router set to a different channel. Kudos on getting the matching adapter for your router, the directional signal forming is probably helping you reach as high as you are now.
>>
>>55609988
I'm actually just using 5Ghz on my computer as I've set my adapter to ignore 2.4. I've turned off both of my extenders but I'm unfortunately not getting any better speedtest results.

I've got a Hitron CGNM-2250 (http://www.hitron-americas.com/products/cgnm-2250/) that I'm using in bridged mode right now. Do you think it would be worth disabling bridged mode on this and seeing if I get better speeds with that?
>>
So how do I pirate Win10 permanently? Is it possible considering their abusive updates policiy?
>>
>>55610109
If the hiltron is a wireless bridge on the same band it would interfere with your maximum signal. You don't want to be using it as the equivalent of an extender, ideally you would want to have it wired in and broadcasting on a different band than the asus. You can disable a given band on either routers if you're not using it, although 5ghz short range makes it easier to have two fairly near each other if you've got a lot of 2.4 interference in your area.

>>
>>55610262
No way to know for sure. You can try pirating 7 and then getting a license for 10 via the upgrade offer. But really it doesn't matter. The keys are so cheap, and the don't give a shit if you originally pirated. Also the restrictions on unactivated windows are almost nill these days
>>
>>55610267
It's basically just acting as a modem for my Asus router that's plugged in to it with a network cable. Do you think I should just get a better router or look into powerline networking? My house is big and I need two extenders to get even half-decent coverage in my basement and far end of the house.

Doing some research on these powerline adapters and it seems like something that would work for my situation. Are there any drawbacks or is the technology really as great as it sounds? I'd like to use 3 of them around my house.
>>
>>55610388
Thanks, but what do you mean by "hashes?"
>>
>>55610334
The other elephant in the room is wireless overhead. It's a bit like how your hard drive capacity is much smaller than advertised once it's formatted, and on wifi it's huge. Your actual transmission can easily be 40% less than advertised, which means that on a single band you would already be fairly close to the ideal N speed. Now the hiltron has AC capability, which has a little better range and way better bandwidth. You might just want to pick up a couple of adapters or pci cards for that, and use the asus for 2.4. Now AC is strictly 5ghz, and you would want to make sure your adapters are at least dual band AC to get the most out of it.

>>55610450
Powerline is a good solution in general, provided your houses cabling is in decent shape. It's pretty reliable and fast. Not encrypted usually, but that's not really a practical concern for most people.

That is essentially a finger print of the file, if anything about a file changes, even a single byte, that number will change.
So long as what you download has the same SHA1 hash as on the page you have a clean download, anything else and its been changed in some way.

Is getting an i7-6700 (non-k) a good idea or should I get a i5-6600k?

I'm not that interested in overclocking because I'm not sure if I could handle the increased power consumption and noise that comes with OCing, but it does seem kind of useful for squeezing more performance to keep up with newer processors after a few years of use.

Also, should hyperthreading be disabled when playing games?

It's the line of numbers called a checksum, intended to tell you with reasonable certainty that a file hasn't been modified since the owner made that checksum. They come in varieties like sha-1 and md5, although md5 can be broken easily these days, so you should only use those to check that a file hasn't been damaged by copying it. Sha-1 is usually good, although if someone was determined enough they could probably make a version of the file that had a virus and passed the checksum. It's why they're working on new checksum versions to replace it.

Those should work. Don't expect actual gigabit speeds, but it should be pretty good still. Their description of that extender isn't very good, but I'm thinking it's point is to be more like a wireless access point attached via powerline. It doesn't seem to come with any other adapters, so I'm thinking you would need to buy at least one other compatible power line unit to get any use out of it. Yeah cheap switches are nice, no setup, usually no noticeable impact on latency and you can use more than one, just don't attach one to the other.

Downloading a big file through chrome (4.1GB). It got 2.15GB of the way through, suddenly stopped and is acting like it's a complete download. I've tried resuming the download using 'wget' but because what I'm downloading (XCode) requires a login with your Apple ID and shit, it seems to not be letting me because of certificates or some shit.

Don't want to waste another 2.15GB (plus the 0.9GB from when I first tried it), so is there anyway I can resume the download from where it thinks it has 'finished?'

I can grab a new download link by logging in with my Apple ID and shit but it of course just starts the download at 0GB. Tried renaming files and shit in an attempt to trick it into thinking the incomplete file is the actual file it is downloading but it doesn't seem to be working. As if you can't just rename the file, get a new request, it checks it, and downloads where it left off (like every fucked torrent has ever done for me).

No, nothing to do with a year. If you bought legit windows, the upgrade is free. If you pirated it, some people are able to upgrade successfully, others aren't. You probably didn't get 10 activated and your trial expired. Use DAZ or keep using unactivated, it doesn't mater much.

My main interest when I got it back in 2007 was to draw with it, which was perfect. It was the laptop that got me into thinkpads. Hell, some guy used a x201t while installing our security system. It seemed perfect and I really liked it, yet he hated it.

That brought me to want another thinkpad for serious drawing. I could never get around to finding one though, so I have hopes up for something else that is to be released later this year.

Will keep this in mind for next time, however it doesn't seem like it wants to resume, or if it's even possible. It just stopped at 2.15GB, spat out what I believe it thinks is the completed 4.1GB (but obviously 2GB shy). It didn't get any .part, .incomplete or anything like that; just gave me an incomplete (but thinks it's complete) archive format. The file is meant ti be a .xip, and it just gives me what looks like the complete .xip file... 'Xcode_8_beta_2.xip' ...But when trying to unarchive it, it tells me to go fuck myself because it's obviously 2GB shy of being complete.

How can it even stop half way through a download and think it's fucking done, what the fuck chrome? My guess is that the verification certificate(s) attached to the request from Apples download servers are on a timer to expire or some shit. And they obviously haven't taken into account the poor souls of Australia who take a trip around the Sun to download 6 bytes.

just fuck my shit up already fäm

my laptop's resolution is less then 1080p, closer to 720p to be honest. Will I still get a good bit of extra video quality from 1080p rips of anime? Well, I mean that makes sense. Not having to put fibre connections from the node to the house means you'll save a fuck load of money and a fuck load of time - so I'll get my 'fibre connection' faster, right?
>tfw Liberal somehow manages to rollout to less than two suburbs in a 100km radius of me in the whole three years

Posting here because I thought the other thread was for general career advice. So I work at IBM as a software engineer. Recently, I have been contacted by some entertainment websites, sports websites, etc. to be doing my job but for their products. Basically, getting offers for a software engineer for a non-tech company.

I'm still relatively new in my career and working at IBM has been .... okay. I feel like taking a new career change would be nice but am a little worried about working at a "non tech" workplace. Am I just fearful for no reason? Like if I was a software engineer for CBS, ESPN, or Walmart or somethign that's still fine right?

No. I'm 100% certain that's poorly randomized. I have playlists for various TV series that I put on for background watching.

My largest playlist is 164 episodes spanning 9 seasons. It almost always picks from the last 4 seasons and typically the same episodes. I'm the process of making a data sheet so I can have a graph showing the distribution to show definitively how poorly it randomizes.

not tech related but there's no stupid questions thread on /ck/. I bought 15 rolls from the supermarket Tuesday on a special offer and have stored them in my fridge since, thinking they'd stay fresh at that temperature. Just heating one up and ate it right there but it smelled off. Could they really go off that fast? I know cooked rolls go off faster than loaves of bread because they're made to be consumed right after purchase, but that's why they're in the fridge. desu people tend to try to crack passwords by getting a leaked list of accounts and passwords and running a program to crack as many as possible. trying to brute force one person's password isn't worth much because it takes a long time for a very small payoff. even if a site resets everyone's password, a lot of people use the same login details on other sites. also, brute forcing usually isn't used because dictionary based attacks work much better. google hash cracking or something like that if you wanna read more about it.

My new laptop has been having these very weird micro-stutters on games it shouldn't considering it has good specs. Hell my old laptop never had this problem.

After reading some forums the only explanation seems to be HDD related. I tried everything from playing on low settings to putting every single option on "favour performance" and doing the whole switchable graphics thing.

Games like dota 2 and overwatch have these micro stutters every 10 mins or so (it also affects audio)

my question is is an SSD gonna change anything? If i put my games on the SSD and load them from there

from reading on the internet about SSD's it seems they dont affect fps (but my problem isnt even fps related the fps is stable until i get this microstutter for 1-2 seconds and then goes back to normal)

Have a real good one today, how difficult would it be to bring an old operating system like Windows 95 to modern levels? There are certain caps in the operating system (like the one on RAM, which I've heard many things about, from it only using 512mb ram even when there's more memory though I think this is just a rumor and that it can support up to 4gb) so how much will have to be done to modify it? I mean, it's as basic as basic gets when it comes to the modern windows style so it can't be that complicated, but maybe it isn't worth the effort?

VLC supposedly has metadata-editing features, right?

If I open a file and change some of them, a "save metadata" button will appear and the metadata will be saved when I close the window (as shown by the new title displayed as the file title), but when I close VLC and reopen it, the file still has the old metadata.

Does VLC only change the metadata for that specific session, or it should change it on the file itself (and somehow it's not working for me)?

I've had that happen to me a few times. If you're sure there's nothing on there that you need, then just format the drive.

Just now I tried to save an image that I had opened into a new tab (in Chromium) from a thread which died quite a while ago. I'm fairly sure that I have done exactly this before, but this time I got an error message: "Failed: No File", or something like that.

I always thought that saving an image involved copying the image from a local cache, since the browser has to have the image in a local cache for you to be able to click on it in the first place. Why on earth would it be necessary for the image to still exist on the server?

Has this always been the case, or is this something that Chrome/Chromium has changed recently?
