Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Bear in mind the digitiser has issues with the cursor having a tendency to ingest a few kilograms of ecstasy around the edges of the display, that is it dances around because lolwacom. A few round of calibration and firmware update helps but it won't completely go away, same with the X230t

Oh and watch the rubber tabs on the sides. They'll run away after a few years and the only real way to get new ones is a new keyboard bezel

Modern Thinkpads aren't as good as the old ones, but they're solid machines. Not that hard, though, considering the competence.

If you want to have several displays, you're not going to be moving much. Get a desktop.

If you want to have several displays yet still be mobile, get a desktop and a Thinkpad to take around when needed.

The point of Thinkpads is that older models are very capable machines that you can buy for very little money, and they're very resistant to damage.

14 inch is fine. Doesn't feel that much smaller than 15", specially when I had 15" for nearly 10 years

It's 16:9 as well, so you shouldn't feel weirded out like with 1280x800, 16:10 screens.

Now compares to a 12", it is a good difference. A cousin has a 12" and I had to get closer because its resolution was also 1368x768.

I'm actually a lot further from buying this than I am pretending to be. There are so many options and it's fucking killing me.
Lets break this down.
I can spend whatever it's all student loan money and I take pride in being fiscally irresponsible.
I can spend another $200 on a customized thinkpad 13 and it will have a 6200u, FHD out of the box, ddr4, small ssd out of the box. But still, with epp discount and adding the price of a new panel and drive to the t450 the price is similar. Problem is 3 week delivery time.

I can get by with a sandy bridge just fucking fine but I want something NICE. Still a t420s would cut it and save me a fuck ton of money.

I love the way the 14" latitude 5000 series looks with the blue highlighting on the KB.

Or I could just go with a consumershit piece of plastic.

idk what to do ive spent all day every day looking at laptops for months hold me /tpg/

Looking for a reasonable model upgrade from 2012 T430. I love my laptop, but I preordered the Vulkan red book only to find out that my NVS 5400M won't have driver support for it on Linux, let alone Windoze, which is a shame since I want to use it for a degree project.

Willing to spend up to $450 bucks (not putting it on credit, already in a small, but still intimidating debt hole). Don't really care about hybrid, since my current bumblebee set up has been able to run my OGL projects thus far just fine. Screen real estate is also a factor, since I code in emacs and I prefer a decent size.

Not picky about other specs. I only play Factorio on my breaks and use my desktop for entertainment.

Also, for the love of god, no Elitebooks. My last one had a catastrophic power failure that almost burnt down my complex.

Thanks in advance.

I have an x230t.

Uh, if you don't have other options for tablets where you can see where you're writing, get it. It's good for that.

It's one of the best tablet devices but the small resolution and the drift near the edges is annoying.

Got an x220t for 175 canuck bucks because the screen had a cosmetic scratch, and some minor wear on case (bottom left corner has a chip in case, right rubber tab is missing, minor crack on back top right). Core i5 2520M and 6gb ram.
Just needs some proverbial spit and polish. How'd I do?

Just get a T460 anon, or an X260. Intel builtin graphics are pretty impressive lately.

If you need power juice, you can get a P50, which sticks much closer to classic thinkpad design with the hinges and touchpad buttons and shit, but is probably a fair bit heavier than your T430 was

>I think some times I need to push it too hard.
>cannot easily find trackpoint options
I see you have a newer thinkpad

on newer thinkpads, they switched to synaptics drivers which fucked the trackpoint so much it's basically unusable

also unlike the plethora of trackpoint options you had available to you on the older UltraNav driver trackpoints, we only have this garbage now

you can change the pointing speed but it still will feel pretty stiff

the "Trackpoint Middle Button" option doesn't actually change anything btw, the scroll direction won't change no matter what you put because synaptics is a shit. Could they really not think of anything more clear than "Traditional" and "Standard"? Did they not know it didn't affect anything before they made it? idk fuck synaptics

If it's an IPS screen, pretty good.

If not, it's still decent. Definitely didn't waste money provided you're alright with the cosmetic issues.

Speaking of Canuck bucks, I need some advice.

I can get a W520 for 300 Canuck loonies, but part of me wants to hold off on it because I plan on building a desktop in the next month or so. I figure the money is better spent on a better GPU(or possibly a second one). I also don't really need to buy it either, as my current laptop (and X220 as it turns out) works just fine.

Because I don't need it, I'm leaning towards passing it by, but according to the Ktgee thinkpad guide, they usually go for upwards of 450 (although that's usually dependent on the specs). Specs are as follows:

Intel Core i7 2720QM @ 2.20GH
1600 x 900 @ 50Hz
2048MB NVIDIA Quadro 1000M (definitely would have nabbed it if it was a 2000M)
4 Gb of ram
465GB Seagate ST9500420AS (SATA)

Seems like a decent deal, but not a "Holy shit buy this now" kind of deal. Maybe I'm misinformed though.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

It's from Lenovo. The seller says it holds a charge well, but don't expect it to act as if it's brand new. I expect ~65% charge being held.

not gonna lie anon I think you got ripped off

I got mine a few weeks ago for $300, it came with 8gb of memory, a 128GB ssd, i7, and IPS screen

if its in good condition and you are happy with it obviously it doesn't matter though

That's pretty good for Canadian fun bucks. I got my W520 with a 1080p screen, 8GB RAM, a 120GB SSD, and otherwise the same specs for $375+$20 shipping, and that's in the US.

It's a really nice machine, easily the best Thinkpad of its generation, but if it doesn't suit your needs then let someone else have it.

What is the usual way that corporations liquidate large lots of Thinkpads? Do they hire a service to resell them to get a good return or do they privately sell them to interested parties for cheap?

Is there a site they advertise on?

I'm wondering if there is a standard or norm that is generally followed for liquidating eol and off lease hardware
>>
>>55582602
3rd party usually. The place they leased them from from may pawn them off on ebay or dump them on another bunch to stick on ebay or the like (you can usually tell it's such if they have a stack of the same model)
Otherwise, government auctions for old government used

>>55583022
>Did you consider yourself lucky or was this a normal purchase

normal. they had about 5 other lots of thinkpads they sold that day for the same price. we mostly go to physical auctions, everything always ends up selling way higher on the online ones. although we have bought scrap copper from nasa a few times on the online auctions.

one time i bought a lot of 100 random business laptops for $500 at an alabama surplus sale and got like 10 or 15 elitebook 8440p and some other fairly recent business laptops so that was pretty cool. a couple weeks ago my dad bought about 20 grand worth of police radios from an auction in mississippi.

Holy shit. The south is the place to be for auctions

You must have storage problems though!

Do you think large cities have worse markets for item lots like these? Sure seems so from my perspective. There are certain traveling auctions that are worth following to the next state over here due to the price difference. I guess the best deals are going to physical auctions in poorer states
>>
>>55583338
>You're lucky. I bet you don't have a bunch of stupid buyers there to compete with

yeah there are a few guys who fly out from like NY and Cali that buy a lot of the stuff. my dad is friends with them and they will generally ask him which lots he wants and let him have them so they aren't bidding against each other the whole time.

>You must have storage problems though!

yeah we never seem to have enough, one of our neighbors actually moved several years ago and my parents bought the house just to store shit in. we also have 3 large sheds packed with stuff. i dunno if the large cities have worse markets or not, we generally only travel to auctions in MS, LA, AL, and TN

External GPU or W series. eGPU performs better, but ties you down to a desk and an external monitor. W series retains some amount of portability, but they're still relatively expensive compared to equivalent T or X series. The extra ~$200 that a W520 costs compared to a T420 or X220 would cover the entire cost of the eGPU setup.

4gb is fine for average users. You really need to describe the type of activities these things will be used for to get any sort of specific recommendations on ram.

Generally 4gb will suffice, 8 is great, 16 is overkill, though the type of activity again, changes this.

Little bit high, but not much. Use TPFC to make the fan more aggressive and replace thermal paste if you haven't already.
>>
>>55586387
You've got to look at it holistically. In part it's going to depend on how bad you're going to cripple them right out of the box. Disk encryption and antivirus set to full autism plus whatever the standard programs for job multitasking roles and 10,000 browser extensions+toolbars may be a bit much for an i3 and 4GB RAM.

If you're going to be the guy that has to listen to people bitch about "my computer is slow" I'd think twice. Buy one, kit it out, and release it into the wild with a power user and see what happens.

Nvidia Optimus/Prime works with eGPU setups so an external display isn't required. Using external display connected directly to eGPU gives better perf though.

120w power block and expresscard eGPU adapter is around $70. Add a $130 dGPU and you'll get vastly greater performance than what you can get with the W520.

W520 is nicer to carry around and set up for gaming than an eGPU ThinkPad setup though I'll give you that.

You'd want an external monitor with either the X220 or T420 anyway, though. The X220's 1366x768 is way overkill for a $130 GPU and the T420 screen is utter shit.

We have all been chosen by the Saint of Freedoms. The sun shines on us all, but do you have open eyes to see it? When a world torn asunder by OSX and Windblows beckons the Saint for mercy, he will bow his head and utter "GNo."

e545 here. 5 gb of space left on my computer. Feels good to be part of the master race.

So I just bought a thinkpad 13 with i5 core 6300u, 16 gigs of ram, a fhd screen, and 256 gigs of storage for college. Did I do well? It's good for an actuary major and for overwatch?

Using internal display doesnt give you as good results as some bandwidth is used to send the image back to the computer

External monitor always yields more frames

Really want a T440s. Can't seem to find one for ~$200-250. Any other suggestions in that range? Want something thats on the slim side.
>>
Just got my T450s in. Seems like a damn nice machine so far. Still have some configuration to do before it's fully operational but I'm a fan. The IPS screen is gorgeous.

seems like a nice machine, not sure how it'll handle overwatch though

>>

>>
>>55593925
I got a 9 cell "original but i know it's not" for $50 from China. I'm not going to pay $200 in shipping fees from amazon.

x220 tablet (x220t) has a touch screen variant, but it's crude and generally mimics the mouse unless you use lenovo bloatware
x220 doesn't have touch

>>55593925
Redeem a battery recall, or buy a /used/ one off eBay
3rd party batteries work fine but they don't compare to lenovo brand, so maybe buy two if that's the route you take

How's the screen on most HP Elitebooks (2xxxp)?

Is it possible to fit more than one harddrive in a x220t?
>>
>>55594790
No, unless you get a dock or something

If it's got the same internals as the X220, it has a space for a hard drive and also a space for an mSATA drive, so yea it can have 2 drives but one is an mSATA not a normal sized one

What's a decent Elitebook for around the same price as a T420? Or should I just get a T420 and call it a day?

Also

>get used T41 from someone
>GPU dies after less than 10 uses

fucking amazing.

my x220 has i5-2520M but has speed of 3.2GHz
I'm guessing previous owner overclocked. Should I set back to default or is this a normal mod?

Nice bait with the browser tabs
>>
>>55595211
That's the turbo mode. Unlock the speeds from the BIOS so the OS can control them.

>45-49c idle
>95-100c when playing csgo
