Wanted an expendable companion for work, now it has 6GB of RAM and has become my main machine when I'm not playing games. Wish I had spent a bit extra for the X220, but this thing was £80 so I'm not complaining.
>>
Will I be happy with a new dell xps 13/15 (the screen/bezel makes my dick hard), or should I just get something cheaper and build a good desktop too?

I travel a lot for work, and bringing my desktop with me although is an option and technically doable (I wouldn't bring a monitor but every hotel room/workcamp has a tv in it that I could use as one), isn't exactly ideal and I'd rather have a laptop that can play some vidya too.

Or should I just be a huge faggot and get an alienware or msi laptop since it doesnt exactly need to be portable in the sense that I bring it with me every day on the go (it will mostly just sit on the desk in a hotel room or on my desk at home 99% of the time).

I want one of these so bad, but is it really better than a dual or tri monitor setup? How is it for gaming? Is the extra screen real estate useful or is it wasted by the limitations of your peripheral vision? Also how are movies on it? Is there shit being released in 21:9 or will I have to choose between big black bars or tons of clipping?

I haven't been this excited about new hardware toys for years. Going from 45FPS at 4K in TW:WH to 111FPS was just fucking amazing, I expected much better performance of course but getting almost 2.5x higher FPS at the same settings pretty much blew me away. They're quieter and cooler too, power consumption went down by like 200W.

For all their vaunted driver quality, the NVIDIA control panel is pretty fucking shit and slow though and I've seen some weird-ass behavior on the desktop. I'm none too happy about the main card """idling""" at 1.2GHz and full 10GHz memory clock either.
>>
>>55563737
Newer movies are awesome. I'm re-watching Thor right now while my simulations are running. It fits full screen 21:9 which is actually too big... Yeah I'm loving the real estate. Expensive, but better than multiple monitors.

>>
>>55564050
Thanks for the tip, I'll have a look into that. I'm not sure it can be configured user-side, it's because of all my monitors. I have 3 screens and one of them is 4K. If I unplug the 4K monitor it drops to ~400MHz, so I guess it's either a bug or it's actually required.
>>
>>55564079
It's the way nvidia decided to handle multiple monitors. With one monitor plugged in I stay in P12 mode (mostly) at 50Mhz, with two it goes between P8 at 400Mhz and P0 at 900Mhz.

I'm betting that you're probably in P8 mode with two monitors plugged in.

I use Nvidia Inspector and then just have it use P8 or P0 when I start certain programs. Otherwise my GPU will idle at 60C.

I'll have to read up on that, my top card is actually idling at 56C right now. Bottom card is 39C with its fans off.

>>55564269
I think I saw you post a few days ago in a guts thread, I mentioned you only having 1 SLI bridge with Pascal, but I didn't have my cards yet. Well, I only have old ribbons from the P55 days, but long story short if I use 1 bridge I get 40FPS in TW3, if I use both of them I get 60+ (at 4K), so they actually make a huge difference. Don't have my hands on a HB bridge as of yet but I doubt it will further improve performance.

As for the price, last time I decided to go for the more budget friendly option and I kind of ended up regretting it (because AMD's CF support was/is crap, a single 290X is a fine card but not for 4K). This time I wanted to go all out and see if I regret spending the money or not, the performance is way too good right now for me to not be happy though.

I am incredibly happy with my XPS 15, but you should know that the GTX 960M isn't at all great at games, even if you opted for the 1080p screen or played at a lower resolution on the 4K. That said, it's phenomenal for productivity, with the caveat that it lacks a number pad on the keyboard.

AF(air flow) fans are the usual fans that blow an an average, even amount of air over a wider area. Usually good for push or standard air circulation.
SP(static pressure) fans concentrate air in a smaller area. More air flow in one spot but less air for surrounding components.
These are good for processors or directing air over video cards..what mine are for.
Basically if AFs were flashlights, SPs would be laser pointers.

>>55564448
Yep that was me. I just replaced my recent power supply with a new one for modular cables and all!post bought two ribbons while I was out.

SP fans are for radiator and other restrictive use, they don't provide "focused" airflow. Static Pressure is the fans ability to push through resistance.

Using your analogy, it would be correct to say Corsair's AF fans are like flashlights with more flood, and their SP fans are like brighter flashlights. AF fans are better for general use, and provide air over a larger area, whereas SP fans are better when penetrating objects (e.g. Stack of paper, your hand).

Crimson is actually workable, it responds pretty fast and you don't have to wait for it to load shit. Settings are applied immediately and in general you don't get stuck with an application that apparently stopped responding because it's loading crap in the background.

Also, pic related is what happens if I try to select a game profile from the dropdown. I don't know if it's broken or still loading shit, but this is pretty crappy either way. Clicking the Add button takes several seconds for the window to open. I tried to edit some Global settings and the control panel crashed like 5 times before I got it to work. Clicking Apply once again takes several seconds with the application apparently frozen in the meantime. It's usable, sure, but this isn't the sort of responsiveness I expect from a program that changes some settings in 2016 on a system with a fast SSD. If they have some long processing/scanning to do, they should at least not do that shit on the main GUI thread and indicate some progress.

I don't know if my install is broken or if this is "normal" as I haven't had NVIDIA cards since the good ol' 8800 days.

Some run absolutely the same with 1 or 2 bridges for me, but as I've said in TW3 I literally get a 50%+ performance boost by going from 1 bridge to 2. You have a fancy bridge too, those are supposedly running the link at a higher clock, so in your case a single bridge may be enough, but I don't know (nor is there extensive testing done). In any case, it depends on the game, that much is absolutely certain.

Coincidentally I've got a RMi PSU too, just the 1000W model.

Corsair K60.
I needed a keyboard, nearby shop only had this, some Razer and ASUS keyboards.
Solid (both literally and metaphorically) buy I would say, I love the aluminum body and how heavy it is. Switches are what you'd expect them to feel like. I find myself using the media keys very frequently.

A shame that the function keys and the buttons above the arrows keys are not mechanical.

same place you usually go.

Just learn what bitrate is. What h264 and h265 are.

And learn that a 720p encode will look better than a 1080p encode if you have the same filesize/bitrate.

People tell you to not use VLC because you can use high quality scalers that will take a decently encoded 720 p screen and upscale it really well.

Apple MacBook Air 11 (Early 2015)

It just works, although I needed a couple of days to adjust. And about a couple of weeks later I'm still learning lots of new things

In some ways it's just like using a Linux desktop. There's fuck all drive compatibility and program support, I can't get any of my peripherals or accessories to work 100% because of fucking Thunderbolt, and Terminal works.

What's great is that I am enjoying 8 hours of battery life easily on such a small and lightweight laptop. I've subsisted on old ThinkPads and Atom-powered netbooks for years. And now I have an i5 machine with 4GB of RAM and a fast SSD.

I think I might actually get a Pro model next year.

Also nice at your 8 hours of battery life! I salute you from my 20+ hours lasting X250, that got a 1080p screen, 8 gigs of RAM, an upgradable hard drive (there's actually an SSD in it) and I can actually work on it!

Damn, I'm still the fence about X230 and newer ThinkPads desu. I was supposed to get a dual battery X240 with 4G LTE and like 10-12 hours of battery but I opted for the MacBook instead. I imagined that it was double the weight. And the fact that I cant stand Windows anymore really affected my decision to go with OS X.

But still even now I'm supporting the elementary OS project. I just fucking hate Windows.

1. EVGA GTX 1070. It's a noticeable step up from not just the charity ATI/AMD HD 6870 I was on, but the 760 I had previously.

2. ASUS X205-TA. It's one of those cloudbooks with that stupid emmc flash storage that's advertised as a "SSD" and it's got the whole "good luck upgrading or repairing" thing since people want to copy Applel but it's the closest I've been able to get to a modern netbook. It's just a little heavier than my Nexus 7 (much lighter than my X200) but it's pleasant to type on and carry around. Odd choice to have 64-bit wangblows 10 on it considering it's only got 2gb RAM but I'm gonna end up peeling that off real quick. Wasn't too expensive, either, cost about as much as the X200 I got a year or so ago.
