Had this happen recently. Either you have an app that is running in the background 24/7 and sucking up resources (without you realizing), or you have malware. Doesn't matter what it is, uninstall the last couple of apps you recently installed.

Then run a malware scan. Just download a free app from playstore.

Are there any good books about older video game programming. I read that book Racing the Beam about programming hurdles with developing for the original Atari and I really liked it. If you can't find a capture card with old style video inputs needed for what you're trying to do, consider buying this.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V2ULFAQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I can personally vouch for it since I own one. Basically it'll convert your composite video signal into HDMI so that you can go from the converted HDMI to a regular capture card that takes HDMI.

Might be easier for you, I don't know.

>>55557541

my dad got an old this http://www.puntocellulare.it/schede-cellulari/samsung/samsung_gti9070_galaxy_s_advance.html

he is complaining a lot about battery life: yesterday it lasted basically half a day with 20 short work calls. It was a new battery, bought few days ago.

what could it be that make it so shortlived? ram usage is t roughly 60% and he has only watsup and flashlight installed: he is a minimal user.
>>
>>55557737
Go into settings and into battery. It should show you a nice little list of things that are using up resources, with the biggest battery hog having the biggest percentage and is usually listed first.

Or there could even be a stupid app running in the background 24/7, or malware. Do the same as I said here >>55557462

If all else fails, be a good child and put a custom rom on your father's phone. Custom roms are usually really good at removing bloatware and optimizing stuff that should increase battery life.

Is it possible to run shell scripts as root without inputting a password, like passwd does?

I'd rather not use sudo.
>>
>>55557905
I unfortunately have no experience with the 480.

Look, I'm going to be real here. Don't ask here for GPU recommendations if you don't already have a brand in mind. If you're stuck between nvidia and amd and you ask here then you'll start another flame war.

Decide how much you want to spend, look at benchmarks yourself, make note of the games you want to play (some work better with either nvidia or amd) and then go from there. But don't forget what I said to get you started that the 970 is a decent card for 1080p gaming.

I have been using a 2tb seagate for almost 4 years now with no problems. All the rest of my drives are Western Digital reds and 1 HGST drive.

Good drives tend to come from Western Digital, HGST, and Hitachi. But then again, Seagate is alright too.

If you want something that just werks, get a western digital red. Those are meant to run 24/7 in NAS/server configs. Never had a problem with them. Just look for a hard drive that interests you and do some research on it. Sometimes, a product can come from a good company but have a crippling defect. You never know.

i recently digitized some Hi8 tapes
i just used a standalone dvd recorder
i tried an old pci capture/tuner card i had lying around, but i couldn't get it to sync very well. a modern one with an integrated encoder would probably be fine though

anything that can do dvd quality or better is fine, dvd is plenty for capturing anything a Hi8 or VHS tape can do

if you're looking for a high quality deinterlacer, check out QTGMC. if they're home videos, they'll probably be interlaced 50/60 fields/s video, so you probably want to deinterlace that to progressive 50/60fps video

I've never actually had a micro sd card go bad on me, that wasn't my own fault. SD card failures are very rare nowadays, as long as you buy them from established companies.

If you want an easy answer, just go with Sandisk. It just werks and has a decent track record.

But I will half shill that you look into buying a shark micro sd. I've owned 3 for months now and they're great. Somewhat faster than my sandisk cards and they look cool.

"Now is a good time to make sure you have a current backup of your important data.

Unfortunately, your Seagate product has failed an important diagnostic test, possibly caused by problem sectors which are difficult to read. Seagate recommends that you run SeaTools for DOS, which has the ability to repair most problem sectors. Or you can take a slight risk and buy a cheap one here >http://www.gearbest.com/stylus-_gear/

>>55558670
At this point, attempting a software repair would be pretty useless. Backup anything overly important to another drive right now. Buy a new drive then clone the old one to the new one.

The important things backup is only just in case your drive fails before the new one comes in. You never know what'll happen with these things.

Are there any good ways to have a good ethernet connection to a desktop that is far away from my router? I've looked into powerline adapters but it seems that they have bandwidth issues and I rent so I can't really drill/route a cable through walls and such.
>>
>>55558725
Have you tried running a malware scan? I think malwarebytes has a free android app although I could be mistaken.

It's also a probability that the phone your father has just sucks. But a custom rom might fix it.

First you would need to root the phone. Then install a custom recovery (twrp). And finally install a custom rom.

Telling you how to do this for your specific phone in one reply would be impossible.

Go onto here and search for the model number of your father's phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/

Look through the pages and see if there are any nice tutorials for that. Since it'll be your first time, I recommend watching some youtube videos on "how to install a custom rom on android".

Don't worry about fucking up to much. Just watch multiple videos, take your time, and follow a guide.

>>55558755
acceptable alternative?
No

But if you are forced to do it in an emergency then it is completely possible to do.

>>55558803
You don't really have to do that. The most important thing is to apply the thermal paste correctly. For the love of fuck do NOT use a "credit card method" or any other method that requires you to spread around the thermal paste by hand.

Look up a video on how to do it and make sure it goes something like this:
>put a pea sized dot in the middle
>squish the cooler straight down onto the cpu/gpu
>reassemble

The process of putting the cooler back on will naturally spread the paste. Anything else will create air bubbles that will actually increase heat.
>>
>>55558856
A good rule of thumb is to not have desktops far away from your router.

Regardless, look into getting another cheap router. Set it up and make it so it gets it's internet connectivity from your current wifi signal. Then from there just stick an ethernet cable from the router to your pc.
>>
does marshmallow save as much battery life as google would have you believe?
>>
>>55558953

Yeah, I usually follow that rule but might end up in a situation where I can't. In terms of pairing routers, would the the second router being connected over wifi to the first cause any drops in speed/stability for the connection to the computer vs say just putting in a wireless card?

Thanks for the help anon.
>>
>>55559016
if you don't configure them properly you can get double nat'd and that would make your connection poor especially with stuff like games.

install tomato or dd-wrt on both and configure both routers properly. you can also use the other router as an AP, doubling the wifi range in your house.
>>
>>55559016
There would be no real difference between a good wifi card and the extra router. Neither should be unstable as long as your current wifi source is good.

It depends on what you want. The router would be a good choice if you want to possibly hook up more things from ethernet in the same room as your desktop. If you don't need more, wifi card is good.

This would be a good consideration too>>55559047

You basically just mash some stuff together, let people try to attack it for about 10 years, and see how it does. Then you make slight variations on the basic algorithm and let people attack it again to make sure.

That's basically modern crypto algorithms in a nutshell.

Basically you start with a seed number, which is based on combining a bunch of hopefully somewhat random sources like user mouse input etc., then you run the seed number through some kind of random-ish function 50 billion times, and convert that to a number between 1 and 10. What you get is your result. You can try googling for more info.

If you want to both save money and get high quality speakers, I recommend you look into getting a pair of 70's/80's speakers.

A lot of the time, these hifi speakers were sold to music enthusiasts back in the day for a ton of money.

I got my Kenwood speakers for $100 from a nice old man who bought them new back in the day. He took care of them extremely well and they're almost like new. Real wood and tick metal everywhere. They get very loud with no distortion and sound great even at lower volume.

Go onto Craigslist and get yourself a pair of kenwood speakers. Rule of thumb is to look for a pair like mine, metal and wood.

My computer stopped going past the POST screen a few hours ago, and I've been tearing my hair out trying to fix it to no avail. I've cleared CMOS, powered my computer completely down and back up etc. and nothing has worked. I tried reinstalling the BIOS through the USB Flashback port with several flash drives (all of which have the latest BIOS renamed to Z97ST.CAP) but upon pressing the Flashback button on the back, it just lights up for a few seconds (the flash drive only lights up for a second or so) and then it stays lit. I've done it before successfully and it should keep alternating between lit and dim for 10 seconds or so.

The power supply is fine. The thing that lights and dims is the Flashback button that's supposed to flash the BIOS on my flash drive. The issue with that is that it doesn't actually flash it-it just looks for the file for a second and stops right after. The motherboard itself doesn't lose power at any point unless I turn the PSU off. Pic related is how far my PC gets before it freezes.

Peerblock is placebo BS. Don't bother. And torrents are barely prosecuted anyway. They send letters but they don't do anything serious. The ISPs don't actually want to go after you. We're getting a bit into "bias" territory but I'll try to be as impartial as possible. Having a retro speaker/amp combo would be great. What I said about speakers also applies to old amps.

Solid metal, high quality Rubycon/Nichicon capacitors (if you go with a japanese brand like kenwood or sansui). If you find one that was taken care of then you should have no problems.

Pic Related

The photo is a few years old and I was trying to meme up my retro things. Regardless, I bought the amp and it needed no touch ups out of the package. All original parts still worked like new. I cleaned it and touched it up afterwards but only because I wanted to.

Are vintage 70s/80s amps 10 times better than nice modern amps? No

If anything you'll get a marginal better sounding amp that looks nice. Half aesthetics half sound quality. A lot of the time these things are cheap so that's another plus.

Rule of thumb with amps is heavy metal and real glass. Don't go for lightweight metal-looking plastic. You can tell it's glass if it's cold to the touch.

I use pale moon for two reasons.

#1: They kept the old firefox user interface which I liked. Firefox started to become more like chrome with each update. A purely personal choice.

#2: The team behind Pale Moon's biggest concern is security. Their fork has a lot of default tweaks and patches that lean towards privacy and security unlike firefox telepathy and other things.

Just compare their default about:config pages for starters. Either way, I don't go out of my way to shill Pale Moon. I like it which is a good enough reason for me. Plus they have stable 64bit builds.

At $68, you would only have a marginal increase in sound quality if you used the headphones with a soundcard.

If you used these headphones with an amp or something similar, you might get a little less hiss at higher volumes.

Does that mean you won't benefit from getting a sound card or amp? No

But for these headphones, onboard sound should be good enough.

That's basically audiophile perspective. For the average person with sub $200 headphones there is essentially no difference between onboard and the top of the line audio reproduction. IF he notices hiss on his system, and plugging them into the back doesn't work, then he could buy a dac or something. And for most headphones the impedance should be too low for an amp to matter at all. If you've already got 7 installed, there's no point reinstalling it. I think you were right about using another technique to transfer the drivers over. What you could do is copy the driver to usb, then restart to the win7 install usb
When u get the to the installation screen, select "repair windows" click on "advanced options" and run the "CMD prompt".
Then use the prompt to copy over the driver installer from usb.

Or you could just use an ubuntu live disk if you want a gui

I bought a bangin' Belkin AC17somethingoranother super max speed whatever modem/router combo to replace the garbage xfinity gateway thing that I currently have because it keeps stuttering and lagging and not connecting and I know it's a modem rather than a router issue because I got a signal booster that solved all my connection problems.

The belkin modem doesn't have any phone lines the way the xfinity gateway does. Is there any way to connect them to each other, or them both to the internet separately, or whatever setup is necessary to keep the gateway as just a way to keep my phones connected?

Getting rid of the phone line entirely isn't an option because it's not my house, I just wanna improve my internet without disrupting anything for anyone else.

A chat support on the comcast website says I could use either a coax or cat-5 splitter and 'assured me that would work' without any more specifics.

dsl/phone lines use an analog signal while ehternet/cable uses digital signals

A simple splitter/snap-op-the-cable adapter won't work.

You're ether going to need some sort of modem to ethernet adapter or buy another box that already has a phone jack.
>>
>>55562059
>buy another box that already has the phone jack

the way I figure it, I already have a box that has a phone jack; the pic related that I'm trying to replace.

I was wondering if I could leave the phones connected to that, and have that connected to the house's incoming cable, while using the superior modem for my computer/gaming
>>
>>55562059
*modem to ethernet adapter, powered box that actually does a sort of conversion from analog to digital
>>
>>55562105
You do realize that just adding another box isn't going to magically make things better right? The WHOLE house gets dsl.

Not only is dsl/dial up horrible but it is extremely dependent on other devices. There is very little bandwidth to go around. If someone is streaming or playing a game, there will most likely not be enough to share with a second or third person to get a clear connection.

Or maybe there is enough to go around but the actual lines running from the cable company are held together by sticky tape and bubble gum. Most DSL internet providers are working with lines made decades ago.

You're most likely shit out of luck at that place.
>>
>>55562105
You're probably going to need to replace that box with exactly the same box box. DSL is no good and no box can change that.
>>
>>55562145
I'm pretty sure what I have is a cable modem/cable internet service. Did anyone mention DSL? I didn't. Does the image of my modem imply DSL? Maybe I do have DSL. I was under the impression I don't.

It's probably some sort of triple-play package deal where the phones are all some sort of VoIP nonsense.

I just want to replace a shitty rent-a-modem that's in who knows what kind of shape with something somewhat decent without my dad going 'how come the phones don't work anymore'
>>
>>55562202
>The belkin modem doesn't have any phone lines the way the xfinity gateway does.

Oh, sorry to be misleading then. It's a cable modem. It's connected to a coaxial cable. Comcast's internet package includes that gateway modem/router combo box that has support for a phone line in addition to its cable modem capabilities. If I unplug the power to that modem I lose the phone but not my tv, probably because the tv is connected to a cable box which is connected to a coaxial in a different room of the house.

>Anyone know a fix for Media Feature Pack for Windows 10 LTSB?
get klite codec pack
also get madvr
>>
>>55562264
Christ almighty anon

Yes, a simple splitter will work in that case. A cable line can be split into two and support internet and phone at the same time. Neither should fuck up. I do that in my house.
>>
can you clean off old thermal compound sufficiently without anything other than a towel?? too scatterbrained and lazy to go pick up whatever the fuck you're supposed to use and wanna put new compound on my CPU/cooler.
>>
>>55562286
So then I just need a coax splitter. Neato.
>>
>>55562291
no
isopropyl alcohol is cheap, get the 90% ones and cotton swabs
do not use a towel
>>
>>55562291
nope

Not only do paper towels leave fibers that could fuck up your heat dissipation but you're going to need at least some rubbing alcohol to get rid of the old stuff. Get a cheap microfiber cloth exclusively for wiping the old stuff off too.

>>55562303
Yup, neato-riffic indeed

How would you recommend I buy a 4chan pass without leaving a paper trail from my bank account to 4chan?
>>
>>55562647
DO NOT contribute to this site.
It is datamining even more now that mook owns it(look at the contraversy with 2ch)
You are getting NOTHING new.
Get 4chanx and you will use recaptcha v2 which is nubers not tiles.
pass gets you nothing more then what everyone else has.

I'm on wifi and when I open utorrent I get full speed for about 20 seconds then it plummets down to about 150 kb/s and it just stays there. It happened with deluge as well, and it's been going on for about a month maybe.

Why? How do I fix this shit? I already changed the router to best channel available.

How can I tell if my GPU is dying? I own the sapphire R9 280x.

Today every game is getting major slowdowns in framerate, but temps are the same as they've always been and when I looked in the case there was only a small amount of dust on anything in it, I tend to clean often.

I was considering just uninstalling all the drivers and taking the GPU out to really get in it to dust it out, and then putting it back in and reinstalling. Think that should work?

>>55562842
If you're going to spend that much on a build, at least get something that isn't a budget heatsink.

Are those windows 8 picture-logins considered secure where you touch the picture?

Could it be considered compliant with regulations like for example HIPPA if your computer is protected by one of those?

>>55562911
Because when not gaming my CPU is only being used at like 3-5%

At least you tried to help. I'll not risk the journey to /v/, otherwise I wouldn't come back the same man.
>>
>>55562943
It's a heatsink. It's a bunch of heatpipes with a stack of aluminum fins soldered to it designed to maximize the surface area that's able to dissipate heat. The actual fan on that thing probably has some garbage sleeve bearing that you're going to replace eventually so you might as well get a more expensive cooler that already comes with a quality fan.

I have a new external HDD that I want to use to archive manga, textbooks and etc. But I may also use it to store my /home back ups. I am inclined to keep it under the ntfs file system but will that effect the permissions in my home back up? I would think not since I compress them into .xz archives but it doesn't hurt to ask. Thank you.
