Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I have an x60 with libreboot installed

I used trisquel to install it but I hated it so I switched to debian

When I boot it it says "error file '/vmlinuz' not found

To boot Debian I have to search for a grub configuration and load grub configuration from (ahci0,1)

It then says something like error unicode fonts not found

How do I fix this so it will boot straight into debian?

any help appreciated.

NETWORK MAGIC NEEDED
I've been fucking with shorewall but it doesn't seem to work for what I'm trying to do.

The computer in question has two network interfaces + a vpn interface. Will refer to them as eth0, eth1, and ppp0.

eth0 is connected to my home network. On this home network I have a pc serving media.
eth1 is connected to a device for stuff (gaymin), but this device can also see and play content from dlna, which is what the media pc is doing.

I usually have eth1's traffic directly routed to ppp0, which connects physically through eth0 to the modem.

what I want to do is route all traffic from eth1 to ppp0 as default, but for certain services and ports the traffic would instead be routed from eth1 to eth0 to be on the normal home network.

What the fuck am I suppose to do?

Thanks, that will be nice once I get it all figured out.
All I know how to do right now is forward the traffic to ppp0. Do you know anything about selectively switching the interface between ppp0 and eth0 depending on which port the device is trying to connect to?

He also pointed out that i3blocks volume block doesn't work in Ubuntu distros by default and adding the line

 command=/usr/share/i3blocks/volume 5 pulse

to the config file will fix it. However I'm not getting any difference, and I'm not typoing it because even when I go into a terminal and go to the file and run the script with those arguments nothing happens. Anyone know how to fix this

If you own a computer for the purpose of managing the information processes of your life, you cannot have freedom in your computing without free software. Free software does not fix the pitfalls of capitalism because that's not its concern. Free software deals with the politics of software distribution and self-governance in computing.

I use proprietary drivers on Debian testing. Nouveau is a shitshow, but it's more of Nvidia being assholes. To further expand on that claim, Nvidia is giving out blobs for them to include on their driver for the newer cards, completely contradicting the point of nouveau. unstable

Debian's release faggotry works like this:

stable = beard old packages and some security updates, nice for servers

testing = packag hangover, they dont break anything but are not secure enough to run them for 10 years without rebooting

unstable = archesque rolling release packages

depends on what youre doing.
I have a minimalist install of arch/cinnamon.
I use almost no ram. Before the de loads up I'm only using 94 MB of ram, not a typo. Idle on the desktop only used 400 something MB of ram.

Thinks like switching the monitors and resolution up for me (ancient hardware and legacy drivers) is a pain in the ass, clumsy at best. Im sure the new drivers for new hardware work great.

What are you doing, and what video drivers are you using thats slow?
>>
>>55549978
Afaik these delays are pretty short.

Debians whole glory is stable, so they push all the good stuff fist to stable, when it's done, they do push the stuff to other releases. The delay is usually about +-2 days.
>>
>>55550003

>Q: How is security handled for testing?

>A: Security for testing benefits from the security efforts of the entire project for unstable. However, there is a minimum two-day migration delay, and sometimes security fixes can be held up by transitions. The Security Team helps to move along those transitions holding back important security uploads, but this is not always possible and delays may occur. Especially in the months after a new stable release, when many new versions are uploaded to unstable, security fixes for testing may lag behind. If you want to have a secure (and stable) server you are strongly encouraged to stay with stable.

imagine a world of free open source robots and machines that produce our foods. e.g. a tractor tilling a field automatically. then a self driving truck brings the stuff to the local supermarket, or even better: a drone ships it to your doorstep.

Imagine a free approach of this and then imagine a proprietary approach of this.
What would you want? Free food that costs very little or food that one big company sells you for a lot of money because of 'convenience' fake reasons?

Because when the robot stuff will be provided as free open source software, you can 3D print/cnc your own robots. companies will have a competitive environment of beating each others prices.

you won't be able to print everything and if you could said technology would be locked down. Right now most 2d printers capable of printing currency, won't. They have integrated hardware that lets them recognize currency and prevents it from printing.

Computer chips among other things, cannot be 3d printed. Barring molecular nanotechnology, this will remain the case for the foreseeable future.

Second free and open source robots do not necessarily bring about cheaper food/ food that isn't sold by one big company. Big companies also use open source software. Robots do not necessarily make things cheaper.

Well I guess for a newcomers Mint's problems don't matter much, since it just works, but under the hood there's the horror.

Let's take a look at Mint, what is it? A showcase for cinnamon, nothing more. You can install Cinnamon on every other distro, so, what's the big killer feature that makes all people wanting Mint?

I don't get it. The webdevs are so incompetent that they made it easy to compromise the site with backdoored iso's and the distro devs are so incompetent that they need to block updates so the distro doesn't fall apart.

Using Mint means for the user, he needs to decide between a broken or a insecure system,

Possibly dumb question, but here goes:

I just set up a local SSH. I can access it via local IP address, but when I try accessing it through its public IP while in the same network, it fails (just stalls), despite me having set up both computers with different ports if they were to be the server

Is this to be expected?

Just wanted to test out the public IP way before having to do it away from home, to make sure it works

Hey /g/. I have a dilemma. Currently sharing a folder over the network from my Windows machine. I can connect to it from any other machines on the network both Linux and Windows. For some reason though, after my server has like 2 months worth of uptime (windows 7 based server), My linux machine gives the error "failed to retrieve share list from server". This happens when trying to manually connect, when viewing the "network" section of nautilus. The only way I can fix this is to reboot the Windows server.

This problem happens ONLY when trying to connect from my Linux clients. My Windows clients and even my Chromebook users can see it no problem. While the reboot takes literally 20 seconds off the server's SSD, this is an annoyance to me. Gonna find the Linux thread and post there too because this problem is truly vexing.

I also have this in the /sqt/. Figured the question can belong in either thread.

Any good reasons why people here change to linux?
I test Xubuntu on virtualbox and like how simple it is, but what are the benefits of switching to linux from Windows?
>>
>>55549934
I like the release phases. Each one has unique trade-offs, as you pointed out.

Personally I'm running Debian Stable, and simply using backports (https://backports.debian.org/) when I need newer or missing packages.
>>
>>55550869
You have full control over your machine, instead of a corporation deciding things for you.

When using Windows, you're placing all your trust, info, and privacy in Microsoft's hands. Are you sure you want to do that?

As an added bonus, security is much easier to handle in Linux. You won't get malicious code executing by accident ever. You'd have to explicitly install it as root. Translation: you get to say goodbye to viruses, basically

I read sometimes that there are problems with drivers. Is that true?
And could I have both, Windows and linux, or is it better to just have linux as the only OS?

Yeah, problems with drivers, while uncommon, can happen.
You can have both installed without issues as long as you have enough space.

Is it reasonable to say there exists no modern laptop with

1) unlocked BIOS
2) easily replaceable components (at very least, RAM, hard drive)
3) no other hardware restrictions
4) no hardware binary blobs/proprietary microcode
5) nice-to-haves like UEFI, 5ghz network chip with open drivers, etc.

I don't need the most power. Something similar to Core2Duo and 4 gigs of ram, integrated graphics is fine.

Is there any reason why a non-freetard would actually want Debian instead of Ubuntu? (Say, Ubuntu minimal, ignoring Unity crap.)

Also, is this still true?:
>In Debian, users do administrative wprl by logging directly into the root account, then -- ideally -- logging out again as quickly as possible to reduce the period of vulnerability. Ubuntu, though, obscures the root password, instead using sudo, and allowing at least one user to enter their own password to issue administrative commands.
>>
>>55552037
nvm about the second question, it seems sudo is installed on Debian if you don't specify a root password.
>>
>>55552128
Yes, Ubuntu does a ton of shady stuff even if you don't care about freedom. It literally sent all your desktop searches to Amazon, only disabled in 16.06. Canonical has a history of doing stuff like this.

Other reasons why you might care is if you don't like Unity or all the extra stuff Ubuntu has pre-packaged. This causes a lot of bloat which can make your computer slower.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of either. The aptitude/dpkg unholy amalgamation package management is truly atrocious.

Yes, no way am I going to install that. I was more looking for a comparison of Debian with Ubuntu minimal.

I don't think that's true, at least not significantly. They both share the same system architecture, package manager, almost everything. If at all some Ubuntu package doesn't work out of the box for Debian, I'm sure a quick Google search will show how to fix it.

That being said, I do recommend Arch. Its minimalness is good, but what I really like about it is that it seems to generally be a cleaner experience (pacman, journalctl, installing your own packages makes it so you know exactly what's on your machine and you can replicate builds). For internet, I recommend NetworkManager over netctl.

Linux is a monolithic kernel.

debian testing is 2 weeks behind debian sid in most packages. debian sid is about as bleeding edge as arch, sometimes even newer.
users of stable expect their stuff to be tested throughout by a lot of people and a certain amount of time, if you need such new software you either compile it and the dependencies or switch to a release with a different update cycle.
