Which is better on limited hardware and why?
The limit is cpu performance, not RAM.
What are some other alternatives out there? I don't care how obscure it is, as long as it looks pretty.

Is lqxqt even stable? It's been in beta like 3 years. I tried in arch some time ago and was a very miserable experience, there is no reason to use itover plasma.

Plasma is a bloated piece of shit.
I use cinnamon on a first gen i3 330m and it is completely responsive. No noticeable difference on processor load from xfce or mate in my experience.

If you have 2gb+ ram then don't use either, just go with Ubuntu mainline
If you have less than that, use xubuntu, mate and lxqt are both shit
