The bigger problem is you can't install stuff Apple doesn't want to let you: 4chan browser, torrent program, any kind of code interpreter.
OSX would lose a lot of its appeal if you could only install stuff through the app store. It's not as if OSX is a mess of viruses and malware with that being a possibility.
p.s. I know it's possible to side-load open source software for iOS, but it's a pain even if you own a mac.

On Android I use Twilight. It doesn't require root since just displays a red-orange overlay on top of the entire screen. The only downside is that you can't sideload apps while the overlay is active, so you have to temporarily disable it if you want to install an app from outside the play store while the overlay is active.

Also the "the App Store gets apps before Android" meme needs to die. Yes, it is true, but it is misleading. Whenever a developer submits an app to the App Store, it has to be approved by Apple's reviewing process, which can take up to 2 months, while Google Play doesn't have any restrictions. Developers would rather start the review and approval on the app store so that they can later release it on Android after it is finished so they are released on about the same date.
