Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm swapping an x200s lid onto an x200 and the backlight isn't working when I install it.

You did good, depending on what you use it for. The t420 with the 1600x900 is good for mobile use. If you plan on using it at home alot, just get a dock and a few external monitors. I have a similar setup with an x200T that I've been using for a few years now. I only email and shitpost, so I don't think I'll be needing an upgrade soon.

I also want a replacement if my desktop should ever die or if i need a computer somewhere else.

Asked this question yesterday:

>Anybody have experience with the ThinkPad Helix 2?
>I am about to pull the trigger on a steal for a loaded model (M5Y71/256gbSSD/8gbRAM/pro keyboard dock) and have read great reviews but there are few video reviews showing off the finished model.
>There are a bunch showing it when it was announced in late 2014 but only 1 or two showing the final model release.
>Anybody willing to share their experiences?

Got the typical "new ThinkPads kek" meme, the "buy x230t/x200 instead" was arguable but those are not in the same class in regards to price to performance and utility.

It's more about simplicity; it just combines a lot of power management stuff into a single comprehensive config file for you to manage. I don't know that it adds a lot of functionality you can't find elsewhere or DIY script if that's your inclination.

I mainly use TLP for setting battery thresholds, turning off BT, disabling turbo boost, setting CPU stepping, and on my T601F, inserting PHC values for undervolting.

I'm thinking of getting the Mini Dock Series 3 docking station for my T430, but I have read that the design partially blocks the exhaust vents, which leads to overheating. The s version's CPU isn't socketed, so you can't replace it. You can with the other, so you could throw in a quad core if you wanted.

What's the Thinkpad with the objectively best screen on the market as of today?
>>
Looking for a laptop, might as well inquire about Thinkpads as well. Need solid build quality and Linux compatibility.

Got my eyes on the T460p without dedicated GPU, as I don't need one and Optimus is a pile of shit anyway. Configured it with the 2560x1440 IPS screen and 4+4 GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, i5-6300HQ and no extras.

Is this a proper laptop for 1256.73 eurobucks?
>>
>>55428112
[not yuro, but] You can probably upgrade the RAM and SSD cheaper yourself. If you just can't be bothered or if VAT makes the difference in price for DIYing RAM/SSD negligible, it's a good config. The big thing being the upgraded screen.
>>
>>55428235
>You can probably upgrade the RAM and SSD cheaper yourself.
Well yes, but the options seem relatively inexpensive, and I don't need more power than this, at least for the moment - when I need more than 8GB RAM I'll upgrade it down the line. Right now I just need a solid laptop. Honestly, I just went with one of the cheapest builds without the GeForce GPU, then upgraded some things like the screen.

Anyone have any good experiences with the T460p, especially without Optimus and with Linux?

You can stick a bigger SSD and more RAM in the Eee but don't go expecting miracles from the first-gen Atom. A Linux distro of your choice is the only reasonable decision as far as software goes. Should I prioritize better performance at lower cost over the portability I want? Using it in college

Takes extremely little time to take it apart.
Most repairs and replacements that I can see have a disassembly time of ~10-20 minutes. The problem is that the multitouch panel I ordered is not working, and it continually refuses to work, despite me reseating the cable about eighty fucking times.

Currently looking for way to access bios again.

Thank goodness this Ubuntu LiveUSB [16.04] boots, and apparently takes priority. So I have some level of in. Re-run boot-repair from here? Find way to get to bios?

I recently got [Expresscard Version] V8.0 EXP GDC Beast Laptop External Independent Video Card Dock. The version in the gearbest link is V7 although I'm not sure what is the difference.

I'm using a power brick (12V 5A) and a GTX 750Ti with it. I cannot currently run the eGPU at full load or it will max out the brick and crash. Still waiting for a replacement (12V 10A). PCIe standard allows drawing 75W from the full size slot and GPUs may peak over that.

I feel stupid, but apparently there's a physical button on lenovo laptops (at least ideapads and some other consumer-brand ones) for recovery that, among other things, lets you boot straight to bios settings.
So Windows is back, but even though it says secure boot is now disabled, Ubuntu still shows up as "cannot boot due to security policy."
I might just make sure secure boot is "disabled" and re-run boot-repair.

This is bollocks. They all have the same shitty clipped in bottom. They are all user-servicable, but not easily - you've got to very careful not to break a clip removing the bottom. The 13, only has an m.2 ssd port for a hard drive, whereas the X* have 2.5" hard drive caddies. The 13 is basically a Edge series tier, and therefore pretty shit. Also, it doesn't have the spill resistant keyboard.

The cheapest non broken T420 in Sweden is at $350.

Doubt I will need 16GB, so about $30 for 8GB maybe?
Screen seems to be around $50 and for that you could get a 1600 x 900 one (saw that you would need som extra cable with it though, and don't know what that would cost).
HDD would be something like $50, but I would need one of those anyway.

So the total, if my estimates are right would be around $200 + battery and it would give me a better one than the $350 ones.
Is the $20 dollar batteries shit?

Either way I have to do some more research I feel.
