The difference is definitely noticeable when you look for it. Whether it's worth the sacrifice in battery life/extra cost is up for debate.

5" screen can do 1080p no problem, 5.5"+ can take better advantage of 1440p
So I had a Moto G 1st generation and was more than pleased with it (until android bloat slowed it all down to a crawl).
The only things I were really missing were a decent camera and SD slot, which the Moto G4 has.
