>>55408102
The core argument here is that Linux support threads are more "deserved" on /g/, because the only people who would use Windows are obviously the ones who've never HEARD of Linux, unlike us underground intellectuals.

Most people here who aren't morons and have an actual job are forced to use Windows or Windows software in one way or another. The height of sophisticated discussion that is /g/ might consider stooping down to help such people make the best of an otherwise undesirable situation, as opposed to spamming INSTALL GENTOO which is obviously something you can just DO in the real world.

Either both types of threads are fine, or any question of any kind is redirected to /wsr/ without context, which would be dumb. If you're upset with /v/ kids posting easily Googleable questions, ignore it.

That's a nice way to open the flood gates for /v/ babbies. /v/ has a larger traffic than /g/ and this will allow to them to turn /g/ their personal tech support board.

And no, windows threads are not fine.
1. There are proper places you can ask/discuss windows issues with paid professionals
2. Windows is not a community based project. No amount of discussion will make changes to any of Microsofts future decisions.
3. This will essentially legalise every other product support thread sicnce they are "also technology XDDDD". So in future we'll see:
HP SUPPORT THREAD
EPSON THREAD
KELVINATOR THREAD
etc.

/g/ is already filled with trolls and /v/ babbies, no amount of banning or stickies will change that. They have ALREADY turned /g/ into their personal tech support board. Even if they haven't, what precious fucking content here do you wish to save? What part of /g/'s intellectual and cultural community deserves to be free of people from /v/ asking how to format a disk? Is it the desktop threads, the Android ricers or the moe avatarfags? Or the "programming generals" filled with uni students and entry level code monkeys who haven't used anything other than JS in their lives. Perhaps it's the endlessly repeating [POPULAR PIECE OF HARDWARE JUST CAME OUT, COMPETING COMPANY NAME IS FINISHED] threads?

Get over it, /g/ is shit. It's been shit for a long time. People asking about Windows and learning to make use of it better at least has some kind of a positive impact on the world.

On the other side i have seen enough evidence on this board to think that shilling is real, and considering microsoft's past record on plying dirty and not tolerating any kind of competition, now for me any person claiming that shilling is not real is like the 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf' story.

Yes, it's covenient to part your drive before installing, the best way to do it is booting a linux live cd and opening gparted. Be sure to make a backup first.

> I'd like to have a dual boot option but boot into W10 as default.
You should install windows first and linux after it because the windows bootloader doesn't recognizes other operative system but grub does. So after installing linux windows will be on the list but if you install windows after linux it'll overwrite the boot sector of your drive and when you'll not lose your linux partition you'll not be able to boot to it unless you fix that manually.

For changing the default boot option modify /etc/default/grub and changee the default entry. After that run the command:
update-grub
This will generate a new grub config file in /boot/grub/grub.cfg. Don't try to modify /boot/grub/grub.cfg directly. This steps works for ubuntu but for other distros may be different.

>>
>>55416242
In theory, yes. Your specific hardware configuration will get "approved" and stored server-side for later installations. In practice, Microsoft will probably revoke the deal or fuck up the authentication process in some way, at which point you'll be forced to use something like KMSPico anyways. You might as well just pirate the Enterprise version now and get the most features.
>>
>>55416292

Well here is the thing. My computer is old as shit. I want to get a new PC, though I am not sure if I will get it before July 29th. If I can secure my windows 10 license, I think I could just transfer it to my new PC later on and then junk/repurpose this old machine.

Doesn't work that way, you need to perform the upgrade on the "final" configuration you intend to use. If you swap out your motherboard or your CPU or something, even the installed copy of Windows will stop viewing at it as genuine.

http://www.howtogeek.com/226510/how-to-use-your-free-windows-10-license-after-changing-your-pc%E2%80%99s-hardware/

ALLEGEDLY you can contact customer support and have it transferred to a new machine, but Microsoft probably doesn't want you to do that, and their CS is notoriously terrible, so I wouldn't count on it. If you must use a legit copy of Windows 10, try to get at least a new motherboard and a CPU and autoactivate it on that.

I wouldn't worry too much about it though, KMS activation is 100% as "legit" from the point of Windows, if anything it's actually more reliable.

Why are there ads in the start menu
>>
>>55416450

I recognize that. There is an app in the start menu called get office or something like that. If believe if you uninstall it, it should go away.

>>55416473
Hmmm that's disappointing. I was relying on that CS phone call pathway to update. Just say something like "O, I replaced some parts because it broke, just reactive it for this configuration and disable the other one" and have them activate it.

So I googled KMSPico, seems like a small file that mods some registry keys to full activate it. I feel like MS has found ways to sniff these out in the past? So given the way MS activates now, how does KMS get around that? Because if possible, I don't want to get a new rig, spend money on all this stuff, and then have to jump through hoops to keep the OS working over and over. If it is a one and done deal, then I think I'm hooked. I have an old laptop with Vista on it that I can test it out on and see if it truly can activate Windows 10.

But I thought windows 10 comes without ads preinstalled? Also why is pic related preinstalled?
>>
>>55416577

That's a good question. I'm currently not using a windows 10 machine myself, so I wouldn't be able to investigate it for you. If I recall, it had some featured apps from the windows store that sat in the start menu. I think you can unpin/remove them from there if they just take up space in the start menu, but they shouldn't actually be installed.
>>
>>55416556
You'll probably end up with a Pajeet if you call them, but I THINK under the EULA you can pester them enough to have it transferred somehow. Again, don't quote me on it.

KMSPico as far as I know does some minor shit to trick Windows into thinking it's a VL (Volume Licensed) copy, and launches an emulated KMS server on your machine every 180 days or so to use for activation. You can also do it without any external software by just connecting to an existing KMS server and having it send Windows a "yep, you're activated" response, which triggers it into being legit for 180 days.

It's legit in that businesses and environments without 24/7 internet connections are intended to activate Windows this way as somewhat of a fallback, and for now is a completely legit method built into the OS. Adobe also has similar shit for people who run small businesses in rural areas or on the go or whatever where they might not have internet access for weeks or months.
>>
>>55416514
because you're not using classic shell
>>
>>55416663

Interesting, so it intercepts and takes on the role of being the authenticator, rather than trying to trick the authenticator? So why does it trigger every 180 days? I didn't know Windows continually polls every 6 months for authentication.
>>
>>55416723

That was my bad. I just continued reading a few more articles that KMS activation only last 180 days, hence the need to continually do so.
>>
>>55416723
>>55416783
Actually if you're using the free upgrade method, it polls every day. There's a preset "grace period" in which your system stays activated without re-checking the validity of the activation depending on the method you use. I think phone activation and validated license keys stay activated forever, unless someone else uses the same key or something. Windows activation is complex bullshit that changes with nearly every version, and I know fuck all about it.

And yeah, pretty much. It's probably their idea of avoiding piracy or something. The idea is that the most "damage" you could do by sending Windows a fake authentication signal is to have it be activated for 180 days, I guess Microsoft didn't count on people figuring out how to emulate these things and running them perpetually.

They could theoretically come out with an update that breaks the whole process, but they would fuck over enterprise customers and lose whatever credibility they still have, and pirates would find another way within weeks. Plus their goal is to have everyone upgrade to Windows 10 at any cost, not to earn revenue from home users buying license keys. Otherwise they wouldn't have launched the free upgrade deal to begin with.
>>
>>55407644
i thought it was a containment general
why do you think they recently started showing up again?
>>
>>55416919

Also, is there a way to change Edge's absolutely horrific font rendering? It's utterly abysmal compared to Chrome.
>>
>>55417109
You can get any of them, KMSPico changes your system to use VL and be eligible for KMS activation. There's no reason not to get Enterprise though, since it has the most features and the least anti-consumer bullshit.

Biting the bullet and upgrading to windows 10. I don't own a Windows 7 or Windows 8 key, can I still get a legit W10 key when I upgrade? If not, can I get a cheap w7/8 key and upgrade with that? I'll probably end up pirating it, but if I can get a legal key for cheap I wouldn't mind paying.
>>
>>55418212
Install a copy of Win7/8 and activate it with Daz Loader, then upgrade from that. The activation process will consider the old install legit, and give you a valid token for the new one during the update.
>>
>>55418318
I read that it would serve you the w10 install for a pirated 7/8, but then consider that new w10 install as non-genuine. Is that not the case?

>>
>>55418333
I updated a Daz-activated copy of Win 7 on launch and ran it for a few months, it was activated and everything worked fine. It's somewhat of an unsaid agreement, but Microsoft probably WANTS pirates to upgrade to Win 10.

>>
>>55418335
You can disable privacy shit with one of the dozen one click programs/scripts out there, but you can't really be sure whether or not any of them actually work as advertised, and Windows Updates have a habit of resetting all of it. Remove every telemetry service and executable, disable automatic updates, add every Microsoft related domain or IP to a block list preferably through your router or VPN, remove every built-in app, get an Enterprise version of Windows, and THEN you might have some privacy. Or just give up.

>And are the improvements worth relearning the interface?
Not really to be honest, most of them can be achieved in a way better implementation with third party software already if you care about them (multi desktop, command line, etc). There's no proper theming support yet as far as I know, the most you could do is use Start10 or Classic Shell. Otherwise, Cortana, Edge, the notification center, the new start menu and the "under the hood improvements" are all completely fucking useless for the most part. If all you want is Windows 7, just use Windows 7. Unless it's taken a specific feature or driver you care about for ransom, Windows 10 isn't really worth upgrading to. But hey, try it and you might enjoy it for some reason. The app store has some decent ports of Android shit at least.

I've been having a problem for a while with Windows 7. Programs I use often will work for a few days, but if I shut down my computer and reboot, some of them will have a corrupt icon, and will crash when I attempt to open it. Reinstalling it fixes it, until it happens again. Putting my PC on sleep does not trigger the problem.

Most recently I'm using a Windows 7 iso from Microsofts page, activated with DAZ Windows Loader, using a brand new hard drive, on a fresh new installation, and I am still having this problem.

The problem does not occour on my friends desktop which I installed Windows on about a year ago.

The only thing I can possibly think it to be is a hardware issue, but I have no idea where to start. Any input would be appreciated.

More likely compared to what? A vast majority of users of any popular OS are going to be completely ignorant about it.

What's the argument here anyway? Should you ignore what you actually use your PC for just because you are more knowledgeable about it than the average person in order level up to a private master sysadmin running obscure distros to succeed in the same daily tasks? And heck, possibly not be able to do those tasks or run the same software because it's a different OS which doesn't cater to your needs anymore. I need software that only runs on Windows. I have some software that I want to use and it only runs on Windows. I'm basically forced to use Windows because of this whether I like it or not.
