I can't believe that non-autists keep getting tricked into Computer Science and STEM

Do you people even know how behind you are? If you don't have several years of tinkering with electronic or working with the bash shell why are you entering into a university for computer science? Why are you borrowing money, or wasting your father's money, to pretend that you're 'good with computers'?

If you were supposed to be in a computer science program, you'd already have demonstrated an extreme enthusiasm for the subject. You would have learned at least some programming already - if you show up without knowing anything about computer science, they're going to wash you out in the first three years like the dumb cattle that you are.

In one of my computer engineering courses we were supposed to write an embedded kernel and whiny adults kept complaining so now it's just writing a basic task scheduler, not including any of the data structures involved or register manipulation. Fucking list traversal for 6 months.
I got into this course for low level software and I'm forced to play with resistors and PLCs like a 5 year old.
>>

I actually enjoy this, Math is my only course that isn't painfully slow. The only bad part was that my professor would make the tests ridiculously more hard than the previous material and not provide practice material for obscure problems but test us thoroughly on them.

Bullshit. You probably just aren't intelligent enough to understand the basic concepts. Almost every single university that I've ever heard of assumes no programming knowledge for entry level computer science courses. Most do, however, assume some base level of intelligence and possibly familiarity with basic operation of a computer.

I might be overthinking things though, all the times I've tried learning how to program at home I've given up because I lack the motivation, so I might be better in a classroom environment.

If you aren't into it walk the fuck away from it, I tried to force myself into it and was pointless, university will change nothing trust me, nevertheless I got a job with OO programming, and I'm fucking struggling, I kinda hate it, the only perk is that it pays well, but is it worth it? (I'm more into low level and procedural, but all jobs here are OO with fucking frameworks).

But I was thinking of saving some bucks and get a Eletronical Technician degree or something, and post that there are profundization courses in PLC that are pretty short and seem accesible, the idea motivates me at least.

Doing electronical engineering would be ideal but working 8 hours in something I already struggle with makes it hard.

Do what motivates you the most as long as there is some work available its ok, big money isn't everything.

TL;DR: I fell for the CS meme (I dont have the degree but took some courses and I have a technician IT degree aswell) and didn't walk away as soon as I felt uncomfortable with it, now I'm fucked.

The fucking nightmareish part was that his mother would regurgitate that as well, and was convinced that even though by the end I was fucking writing the code for him just in psuedocode and he had no fucking clue what the algorithms were doing, he still couldn't translate "if x is empty" into "if len(x) == 0" even if I directly showed him that exact example two minutes earlier. Literally my job. But if you stick with it a bit and try to perform business-y stuff like "Gap Analysis" and try to make your little corner of the place run a bit smoother. Especially in an education environment, the older guys will encourage anything that creates a positive change in your environment.

Especially with Winblows being the standard around colleges, consider researching some basic diagnostic tools like Event Viewer, Active Directory, and all that jazz and teach your coworkers about it.

Public education IT is really fun, I hope you're having a blast too. Our manager loves D&D and board games, the director has an open-door policy for feedback, and we sometimes have department parties where fulltime staff bring in food. It's such a friendly environment!

I do a work study, so they show me all sorts of stuff, currently right now they've handed the reins over to me for maintaining the AD for 3 open labs. We're also working on migrating the entire college over to 64bit Operating Systems. Next meeting I am going to suggest maybe getting more authentication servers so the computers can log in a little quicker. The office is a fun place too, we got a machine that emulates n64 games so when we have a dead day (meaning no phone calls) we'll all have a mario kart tournament.

I think a good intro course should start with the assumption that you have zero knowledge. That's why they're introductory courses. A lot of people taking the intro courses aren't even CS students.

Some people will say everyone going in should already know how to program, but those people are going to find out first hand that's not how things work. This is an occupation like any other. A lot of people aren't particularly interested in the field, they go into CS because there's relatively good job security and a decent salary after they graduate. Some of those people wind up being very good programmers, and some are mediocre.

I had been programming for a couple years before school and college for me was mostly catching up on the mathematics. I was hoping when I got out everyone I worked with would have an unhealthy obsession with computers but that's really not the case. Even if you work for one of the largest software companies, there's a slew of people who are very driven but are there for income alone. I work for a small company but some of the people I knew in college wound up working at Microsoft, Google, Amazon, etc. and many of them had zero interest in programming or CS before school.

That said, if you have genuine interest that will undoubtedly help. If you expect everyone to be like you though there's a good chance you're going to be disappointed.

I'd recommend against a "tech support" job.

Some companies have glorified call center jobs, where they advertise customer support as an ""engineer"" job since you help "tier 1" customers and do recreates on issues//bugs. Most of these jobs require in-house certs and are soul sucking.

You have a large backlog, have to deal with terrible customers and have 0 career advancement.

Even worse is you lose valuable skill sets and get a vendor-lockin.

Avoid these jobs at all cost. Don't fall for the fancy engineer labs.

Oh right /g/ is consumer board now. This thread is now about graphics cards and pc cases with windows.

>A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a network hardware device that modulates one or more carrier wave signals to encode digital information for transmission and demodulates signals to decode the transmitted information. The goal is to produce a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data. Modems can be used with any means of transmitting analog signals, from light emitting diodes to radio. A common type of modem is one that turns the digital data of a computer into modulated electrical signal for transmission over telephone lines and demodulated by another modem at the receiver side to recover the digital data.

That would be a cable modem, my friend, which is essentially a type of router. A true modem is a device which (mo)dulates a analog signal into digital data to be received by the computer and (dem)odulates data sent by the computer into an analog signal to be sent over an analog line such as a telephone line.

It should also be noted this guy used arch and got pissed like shit because he had to install some DE shit on his "lean mean arch machine". Fucking this all the way. If you aren't walking in the doors with a burning passion to extend your preexisting knowledge of computers, they're going to eat you alive. Higher education is an elemination game, that separates the people with a lifelong intrest and passion in the subject from the people who would be better off working at mcdonald's or the local computer repair shop. Going in with an attitude of, "Meh, I guess I'll try for a degree in computers, I guess," is what they're trying to get rid of.

Thats not to say one can't develop a passion for it, but that has to be something you already have before walking in the doors, not something you develop along the way. You'll know you've got the passion when you walk in the door not caring how difficult it is, or how hard you have to work because all you're focused on is your insatiable crave for knowledge and further understanding of the subject matter.

OP I hope you can see what I'm trying to convey. People like to put false hope into others by saying college is for everyone, but the truth is, college isn't for everyone. It takes drive, and a hunger that can never really be fully satiated.

And while you want to believe all of that. Colleges still want anyone in their classes who meet the technical requirements, because regardless of any ideological perceptions people have of centres of academic revolution or ivory towers, the university is foremost a business..
>>
>>55376511
If that were true, then there would be no poverty. No sain person would live in poverty if there was an achievable way out. The problem, it's not achievable by everyone.

>>55376942
And colleges also have names for themselves. If a college just cranked out unqualified graduates by letting them through easily, just to get their tuition money, then buisnesses and potential students would catch on. No buisness would want to hire from a college who just lets idiots out with a degree, and potential students wouldn't want to go to a college that no buisness would want to hire from. A name is very important to a college. Without it, they're essentially nothing but an american standards high school. Colleges make it just difficult enough to weed out people who cant handle it, and still make money from the people who can.

You dont have to listen to me, but I've experienced the challenges first hand, and overcome them. If you don't have the drive, you're just wasting your money (or my money as a tax payer, for financial aid, grants, etc).

They have a reputation for attaining funds from their failures regardless. Those failures including the inevitable lower 2nd and 3rd grade degrees (poor GPA for Americans). Reputation or as it is in actuality, prestige, remains more prevalent based on the seniority of a college in a country rather than its actual successes. More time in the game means more funding and more resources that people who pay to use via undergrads barely avail of unless their academic careers and fiscal investments in the university are large enough. You are literally paying them for the prestige.
