How come Firefox 47 on Xubuntu won't play an HTML5 streaming video? Do I gotta install a codec or something?
FF47/Xubuntu only plays it if I enable Flash. Without Flash enabled it displays a gray box with "Video format or MIME type is not supported"
BUT the same site plays WITHOUT Flash installed on Windows, Mac, iOS, etc.

I just installed Linux for the first time. I decided on Ubuntu-MATE. Everything has gone fairly smoothly but getting my graphics card set up is a real pain. Whenever I try switching drivers from the default x.org one to one of the open source Nvidia ones I get a black screen on reboot with my monitor switching to standby. I've tried following some suggestions I've found through Google but nothing has worked. What should I do? The card is a GTX 760 if it matters.
My touchpad on Debian Testing gets recognized as a PS/2 Generic Mouse. I looked up the model of the touchpad on this laptop (asus k52f) and it's Elantech.
How can I get it to be recognized as a touchpad, so I can configure it? (for tapping, scrolling, etc)

Did Ubuntu come pre-installed with the proprietary NVIDIA drivers?
If so, why do you even want to switch to the Nouveau (unofficial, open source, reverse-engineered) drivers? The only reason to have those is if you
a) Want to intentionally gimp your card's performance
b) Want to go full free-friend

I don't want a gimped card or shit performance and I don't really care about FOSS.
The first thing I did after installing was to try the driver installation from the console using a guide. On reboot I had no video.
Then I found out that there is a built in driver manager that can do the driver installation for you (like I said this is my first time). The Nouveau drivers work but performance is not great and when I try to install the open source Nvidia ones available in the manager I have the same problem as the console installation - no video. Maybe I need a better guide?

Question regarding new hardware and Linux:
Whenever new hardware comes out, say Skylake or Kabylake, can Linux run right out of the box or does somebody need to make new drivers or update them the way OEM do? Never used Linux before.

I installed Arch in dual-boot on my XPS 9350 tonight, following the guide at the end of this comment with a few additions (gave sudoer privileges to the user, set the locale, little stuff) and now I can't for the life of me get the option for Arch on boot. I checked the fstab file and both the boot partition and the root partition are in the fstab, I found the grub folder in the /boot/efi/EFI, and when I originally rebooted after installing I saw "arch" under the options for UEFI boot devices, but booted into Win10 to make sure it didn't get fucked up in the install, and now every time I reboot I can't find the Arch install anywhere. Where do I go from here?

I'm trying to play Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit on Ubuntu 14.04.
Got PlayonLinux and installed it from the retail CD through it (had to fiddle with the settings a bit like setting the emulated Windows version to 98 instead of XP).
Last night I got it to work partially; I could play the intro cutscene, get into the menu and do pretty much everything up until the actual 3D rendering started (race start). The screen just froze at that point (still showing the loading screen).
I un- and reinstalled it several times (including removing the VM and setting it up again, but now I can't even play the intro cutscene -- the screen just stays black, then the game crashes after a minute.
Does anyone have suggestions what to do to get it to work?

Got rid of Arch for Solus on my Latitude E6500. Can't be any happier. It have everything for a typical, normal desktop user need and nothing that we don't need. Not to mention it's brutally fast and have a nice UI. It's now the nicest one after Fedora.
About the speed, I don't really get it being the normie I am but they did a benchmarking using Phoronix Test Suite here. ( https://solus-project.com/2016/06/20/solus-1-2-shannon-released/ )
And the most important thing is that I now type less to achieve the same task as I always did on Arch. Why type more for less?

Hey guys, I just installed a new wireless card in my thinkpad running Xubuntu. The card is detected on startup but doesn't seem to want to scan the area for my network unless I physically put it right next to the router on startup, but if I bring it to where I have the laptop normally positioned, it maintains that connection just fine. (It's just a room or two away.) Is there a way I can kick in in the ass to scan for networks? The old card wasn't having any problems detecting networks but was just dropping connections all the time. Thanks for any help.

Got a new laptop and want to finally make the switch from wincux. I just dont know how to choose a distro. I kinda want it minimalistic and just install only what i need to. My main uses are:
Learning Opengl/c++(first priority)
Browsing the weeb
Playing a few games(min priority)
Also im a bit confused on how to find a distro that supports my hardware, namley a raid0 and SLI configuration. Any point in the right direction is approcatied.

Debian net install is a good option
If you really want it to be minimalistic, don't choose a desktop environment when the installer asks you. This way you'll install your own window manager and your own programs. This is however not recommended for a newbie, but if you wanna go on ahead and do it it's fine. Just don't be afraid of the command line and you'll be okay.
If you want to make things easier on yourself, install a desktop environment. Your hardware can run any DE, so the choice comes down to personal taste, as lightness is not really a concern.

Before I answer this, some basic info:
Display Manager: For now, all you need to know this is like the user login screen that appears when you first boot your computer up.
Window Manager: What draws your windows and interface when you're actually in your session
Display Server: Don't worry about this for now, all you should know is it's called "X11".
Desktop Environment: A bundled up display manager, window manager, and display server with a bunch of basic complimentary programs - to make it convenient for the user.
So now: yes, you can have multiple window managers installed. If you have a display manager installed (and you will, because you installed a DE previously), you'll get the option to select which window manager you wanna use for that particular session. If you don't, it's a matter of editing some configs to switch between WM's.

Yes, there are both propietary and open-source (Nouveau). If you install Debian, the default drivers that will be installed will be the Nouveau ones. It's usually a bad idea to just go to a website and download programs in Linux, things are done differently here. You usually download only from trusted repositories instead of clumsily handling .exe's from a website you're putting a lot of trust into.

Basically, you can make any program portable by linking local libs. That's a lot of work tho. There's a new thing called "snap" that does this exact thing: It gives you a program shipped with all libs locally.

I am annoyed that there is no streamlined way to install ffmpeg for all distros. I work on a software that depends on ffmpeg and I don't want the documentation to just say "look it up" because it's too complicated.

Hello, I'm new to Linux and was unable to find a solution on the Ubuntu forums. Basically, I'm unable to change my default system font to anything but the regular weight of the font. If I set it to a light, medium, or bold version of a font it will just show the regular version. I'm using the Unity Tweak Tool to change fonts if that makes any difference.
