Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

If the demand isn't there from the customers (businesses, not faggots on /g/) then why would they bother?

Also, HP is way bigger in the workstation market that uses these color critical displays, that's why they are the only ones left on the market selling 10 bit IPS panels in their laptops

No. The X series have soldered CPUs, but even if it were socketed, you could only put in a Core 2 Quad at best, and then you'd probably burn your house down because the X200 cooling was not even designed for standard voltage dual cores, never mind higher voltage quad cores.

My T420 has a VT-d option in the BIOS. I assume that means it has it, but I've never bothered to try using it. It might require the Nvidia model, since I know you need two GPUs to use PCI-E passthrough.
>>
>>55196925
alright, thanks
>>
>>55196907
Here's the deal.
VT-x is a CPU-level support for virtualisation. If its flag (vmx) is set for your CPU, you're done here.
VT-d is Intel's I/O MMU implementation.
You will need:
- A chipset that supports VT-d. Chipset model for Intel are usually numbered [letter][digit][digit], e.g. Q77. Google yours to find out whether it supports VT-d.
- A BIOS that offers VT-d as a feature. Search around in your BIOS settings.

Additionally, if you want PCI(e)-passthrough, your card has to have the Function Level Reset (flr) feature.

Why do they even bother with the "Retro" edition? It is nothing like the older models.

Halp, /g/
I'm looking for a laptop for school use (not an architect, computer science, creative design, et al major), with the occasional Netflix viewing experience. I wrestled with several different models and brands and used history to deduct that I need something that can withstand my tardness for several years.
Requirements:
Budget: under $1000
My #1 issue while shopping has been finding a 15.6" display with decent battery life and a 1920x1080 IPS display. I don't mind "lugging" around a 5 lb laptop in my bookbag, if it means I can comfortably use side-by-side windows (research/netflix/skype + Word.exe). Touchscreen is unnecessary but wouldn't disqualify a model. Also, is the anti-glare function recommended? I'll be operating the laptop more during daylight hours, and I suffer from some moderate light sensitivity, if that matters.
I'd prefer a core i7 processor simply because I have a tendency to turn one tab into 50, while also running youtube or spotify for music, and I don't have a problem spending an extra buck or two for some unnecessary power.
Solid state drive, I don't plan on storing my 4TB animal rape porn library on the machine and I'd like to have a reasonable boot time for portability and practicality.
Preferably 8gb DDR4, I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
7+ hour battery life is a must, especially with my tendency to forget that things need to be charged.
tl;dr need a 15.6" laptop that can handle a drop every other day, Thinkpad or otherwise.
Thanks in advance for the help, /tpg/.

>>55198077
I truly hope you are right and that the Retro Edition will be a great one. Sadly I'm getting very pessimistic about the future prospects of Lenovo and how they are running the ThinkPad line.

I do know that I'm not the one to complain as I'm not driving the market for them. I'm just buying refurbished ones for the nice value/price ratio. Still very sad for the supply to dry up.

Honestly the keys themselves aren't bad. The keys are curved in, they're pretty much just the top surfaces of the classic keys with the sides cut off.

It's the layout that sucks ass. But it's definitely not chiclet shit, the travel distance is the same and the keys feel nice mechanically

It's basically a whole keyboard of the top two rows of the classic keyboard

just bought a T420 and the vendor shipped it with Win10 installed and I cant get any drivers running. I'd just go with linux, but I bought this to use some work applications with so it's got to be at least win7. Is there win 7 driver support? I assumed there was when I bought it. Also I can't get any batteries to charge with the supplied charger. I bought an extra battery besides the one it shipped with and neither gain any charge when its plugged in. They just stay at their percentage until i unplug it and then they drain. The supplied charger was 65watts, is that the correct one or do I need a higher voltage one for the T420?

windows 7 will work, its what shipped on it. Sandy bridge is "legacy" now and doesnt have any w10 drivers, there should be a COA code under the battery, just find a legit iso and install.

I really want to do this mod, however my old T420 palmrest does not fit on the T430, despite the wiki saying otherwise. Seriously, they don't match up.

Good deal for Nordic country. Especially if it has local keyboard and you like that.

Having a crap HDD might actually be better since then the seller might give it away at considerably lower price and you can pick the SSD that fits your needs.

I think that you can also fit a mSATA card in T430 so you could just use the crap HDD as extra partition for files and shit.

I guess it doesn't have a dedicated Nvidia card since you're not mentioning it.

tried removing battery to wipe bios password. didn't help. a little help please. it's a w510. thank you
>>
So I bought this X201 from an auction yesterday and it did not come with a power supply. I cleaned it up and ordered an ac adapter from ebay.

Then later I was fooling around with it, mindlessly typing on the keyboard, as you do sometimes with dead laptops.

On a whim, I pressed the power button. Lights started to come on!

The battery still has a charge in it from sitting for who knows how long in storage before being surplused. I'm typing this message from it right now and ubuntu says I have 1:15 of battery life remaining.

How about that.
>>
>>55206928
As I said, swap it how? They are not the same shape. You cannot swap the palmrest. I don't know why the wiki says you can. The only option is to trim the keyboard itself.

By all means, send me a picture of your T430 with the keyboard AND palmrest to prove me wrong. After all, I want to hear from other users who have done the swap.

>>55206901
I wanted to do this but I have the same issue, they are not the same size. The problem here is the hinge area. The T420 has smaller hinges. If I trim the T420 bezel to fit, it will cut into the lenovo logo and T420 label, defeating the purpose of the swap.

I'll take photos later if there is interest, I'm at work currently. But take my word for it, I have both the T420 and a T430. While they look identical, there are obviously small differences. The ports are not in the same place, for example.
>>
>>55207280
Ah shit, I only looked the options of the x260 my bad.
>>
>>55207525
I guess they were storing it correctly then. You're supposed to store lithium batteries at 50% charge or so.
>>
>>55206928
>>55207749
To reinforce my point that I don't believe a palmrest swap is possible, look at my first post >>55204215 . That right there is a T430 palmrest. I know this from looking at the area near the arrow keys. So the person who modified pic related didn't change the palmrest either.

Please prove me wrong. I'm not saying this to sound like an asshole that thinks I'm smarter than you. I genuinely want to know how to swap my keyboard without doing the trimming, and insead use the palmrest to have a perfect fit.

Does anyone else hate this recent tapering off meme?

Look at the T460p vs T460s.

The T460s is slimmer by default, and that's fine, but what irks me is the non-uniform body. That thing "slims down"/tapers near the front, and it looks fucking stupid as shit. I understand that they're trying to reduce space and weight, but they do so by removing vertical space which is the least useful place to do that.

I would understand cutting an inch off the back or sides, but why would you taper down near the front? It looks downright stupid.

The MacBook Air started this trend and now everyone thinks they need to fucking do it.

The P50s is the only current S series ((("slimline"))) laptop that doesn't do this shit thanks to it having a dGPU.

I'm definitely just being an autist and this is clearly the new trend, but god fucking damn I can't stand this shit.

Advantages / disadvantages of X220 vs X220 Tablet?

Is it true the tablet doesn't have an mSATA slot for a 2nd drive? Anything else it's missing vs the X220, and does it have anything the X220 doesn't have aside from the screen?
As far as I've found online, there are 2 screens, both IPS, one is multitouch up to 5 fingers, the other is some sort of 'outdoor viewing' screen. Any way to tell the difference when purchasing one secondhand off ebay?
How wobbly is the hinge when carrying it / using a finger to scroll?
What's the difference between the i5-2520M and the i7-2620M, just the i7 is a bit faster? They're both dual core if I'm not mistaken, and the i7 has a bit more cache, but does it run too hot / lower battery life, or is it worth getting the i7 if possible?
>>
>>55212857
The tablet model has smaller batteries and worse cooling, but guaranteed IPS unlike the non-tablet version. Don't get an i7.
>>
Found some thinkpads at eBay from "Geeknext" should I just buy it from them?
>>
>>55212901
Why not the i7? It would have usb 3.0 slot and faster no?

And what's the difference between an X220 9cell battery and an X220 Tablet 9cell battery, why is the tablet model one the one with a smaller battery?

And what's the better screen, the outdoor viewing one or the multitouch one?
>>
Got ~250 GBP to spend on a laptop and I'm thinking of some sort of ThinkPad.

Something with decent battery life would be nice
Would an X230 be a good choice ?
>>
>>55212959
USB 3.0 is the only reason to consider an i7 model. The increased performance over an i5 is too minor to be worth the extra heat and power usage, especially in the tablet which doesn't cool itself quite as well as the non-tablet model.

The X220 Tablet doesn't have a genuine 9cell option IIRC. I'm pretty sure the biggest battery Lenovo offered for it was a 6cell, maybe an 8cell.

Can't speak on the quality of different screens as all I've got is a regular TN X220. I would guess the outdoor viewing one is better to look at, multitouch would only be preferable if you intend to poke at it with your greasy sausage fingers instead of using the stylus like a civilized human being.

There are multiple ways a TP can be locked, if it's just a normal password you can try taking out the cmos battery.

However, if it's the supervisor password, there's nothing you can do short of replacing a part of the mobo.
