Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I need some help with this command.
find . -mindepth 0 -iname "*hokudai*"/ -exec rsync -R --remove-source-files "{}" 0-Hokudai/ \;

This finds all files containing the word 'hokudai' in its name and moves them to the 0-Hokudai directory.

My question is, how do I make it to transfer also directories that contain the keyword.

The command would transfer hokudai01.txt hokudai02.pdf welcometohokudai.avi, but not the directory logsfromhokudaiandstuff/ .

How do I achieve that?

Is anyone here using the latest 1.2.2 version of NetworkManager and its applet?
Does the applet sometimes fuck up for you? It says that there's no connection available and right clicking doesn't show any connections, but according to the right click I'm connected since there's a "disconnect" entry. The CLI version of NetworkManager shows the proper values and available connections. The connection is working fine.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if it's a bug that should be reported.

ESR was one of those people who, post 911, just never really bounced back. Whatever political leanings he had became much more pronounced, and nowadays most things he talks about are either borderline tinfoil hat or full-blown schizophrenia.

If you think the usual brand of morons that hang out on this website are bothered by "social justice" and the people who perpetuate it, you ain't met ESR yet. The same goes for governmental coverups/conspiracy theories, ladder theory, gun rights, and whatever happens to be bothering him this month.

Not saying he isn't a talented guy, it's just that he took a dive off the deep end a number of years ago and never resurfaced. Nawmean?

I need help with lemonbar.

I've configured it to display a lot of informations, but some of the scripts are slow, which results in lemonbar updating slow also.

Currently I'm using it like this:

How can I make it so lemonbar doesn't wait for all functions to finish before it displays the echo line?

I have two large problems with a recent Ubuntu 16.04 installation on a HP Probook 6475b. Based on my limited knowledge they are probably both related to Unity, but I could be wrong:

>1
Oftentimes when I turn my computer on it displays the screen that shows before the OS loads, ie the screen that you could press esc on and then get into the BIOS. However after this the screen often goes completely black, and remains that way. It takes no input, and I cant get any way. Sometimes it works after a while, and the login screen shows, only it takes very long (15 - 30 min), but other times it stays that way. Longest I have seen was 45 minutes. I have tried using ctrl + alt + t, and ctrl+alt + f1 to get into terminal but this hasn't worked. I thought I found a workaround, namely to shut the lid on my laptop when in this state, and wait for it to go to sleep mode, then open the lid again, press the on button once. This has actually worked a few times, but not always.
>2
If my computer manages to get into the login screen I often (but not always) meet a second problem. After entering my credentials, the login "box" diseappears and the background on my computer is the only thing that shows, no taskbar, no launcher, not even the cursor. Sometimes it works after a while, from seconds to minutes, but other times it just stays that way. After my computer remaining in this state for 15 minutes I tried to open a terminal with ctrl+alt+t and ctrl+alt+f1, this didn't work. I also tried the REISUB method of restarting the computer but this didn't work either. I eventually had to just use a hard shutdown. Sometimes this problem appear after using the occasionally working work-around in 1), and sometimes it appears on a boot without any other problems.

Anyone know the soulution to this / these problem(s), or know any troubleshooting tips?

I cracked the case!
This one works.
I needed the -a flag!
find . -mindepth 0 -iname "*hokudai*" -exec rsync -Ra "{}" 0-Hoku/ \;

It needed the -a flag (archive). The reason I wasn't using it is because I have rsync aliased to 'rsync -avzP', but when doing the -exec rsync, it doesn't pick the alias, but the original command.

I'm off to sort my ancient files.

format "44100:16:1"
always_on "yes" # prevent MPD from disconnecting all listeners when playback is stopped.

>>
>>55191420
As I said, the maximum protection for your code being "stolen" is to not release it at all.

What sort of permissions do you want to give? The right to view the source? The right to modify the source? The right to use the source? The right to distribute modified versions of a binary made from the source? The restriction that those binaries also give the code used to create them?

Be more specific.

Forking is a part of open source software. If you're not okay with people doing that, then don't release it as open source. You're essentially saying that you don't want people to improve upon your software.
>>
>>55191479
>not release it
hahah mom i said it again im kool
Why is any software released then?
prop or free?

>permissions
>view source
All code is freely published, and avalible for auditing.
>modify
All changes to orginal source code must be presented to the parent company of the software.Doing so they transfer all rights to modified code to the company.
>use
Software will be presented as a compiled binary. Users are free to compile locally, but cannot redistribute without the permission of the company(modified for x86/x64/arm etc)
>fork
They are welcome to provide PR's which may or may not be pulled in verbaitem or changed from orginal to modify it as the company sees it, they release any rights.
>improve.
They are welcome to publish PR's which may or may not be used.
>>
>>55191620
>Why is any software released then?
I'm talking about free (open source) software; by "not release it at all" I was trying to say "not release the code at all".

There isn't any open source license for what you want, not that I know of anyway. The licenses that fit your description are usually made in-house. You might have better luck making your own license.

It's a shame you're going the route of proprietary software.
>>

>>
>>55191711
You're not "giving it away". You're letting people use the code in order to make other pieces of software, some of which are better than yours. If it's competition you're worried about, why not use the GPLv3? Any binaries that the forker distributes, he must also distribute the source code, meaning that he doesn't have a competitive "edge" over you, in terms of software.

Considering how many others have given away much more than three years of their work, your complaint is pretty empty.

Either way, if you want maximum protection against people who fork your software, don't give out the source.

Assuming you mean to use that 17GB partition for Linux, use gparted to turn the 17GB NTFS into something sane, like ext4, then install Linux on it. Linux isn't meant to work on NTFS. There's a lot of guides out there for dual-booting, and at the risk of sounding like a jerk, a lot of them even have screenshots too so that you can more easily follow along. That'd probably be your best bet for getting started.

There's a bunch of people who dislike RMS and everything he stands for. The reason is, I guess, they got interjected once by some random faggot, asking them to say "GNU/Linux" instead of just Linux. Some people can't stand that and, traumatized, they search the root of all the evil: RMS.

On the othert hand there are people who want to run flash, skype and other bad boys on their system, but they know it's bad and they need a reason to justify themselfs running it anyway. RMS being a pedophile, far a way from reality is a good way to please the brain.

Actually RMS has a political blog where he talks about random events, some of these posts are about pedophilia, necrophilia and beastiality, where he posted his opinions, but none of his posts say anything about his actual sexual fetishes. Anti-GNUfags just love to take RMS quotes out of context to give the Free Software Movement a bad name.

Linus writes beautiful code. He has published some side projects that he wrote all on his own and the code is just wonderful. He also lives in the real world while still maintaining his open source ideals and supporting himself through his work.

RMS is basically a homeless loser who hasn't made any real contributions in the last 20 years. He is still super butthurt that Linux beet HURD (but hey, HURD just got basic sound support in 2016!) and basically tries to claim Linux because Linus used GCC and the GNU coreutils. He survives on the charity of others and speaking engagements where he spouts his insane, paranoid, philosophy. Basically he won't be happy until all the programmers are homeless hackers like him and all the companies are shut down. How people are supposed to support themselves and their families in that scenario aren't things he has to deal with because he is basically a permanent grad student. He does make some good points about privacy, but for him, there is no middle ground. Anything that may reduce your privacy even the slightest bit (like movie recommendations on Netflix) is evil according to him, and must be destroyed. In a lot of ways he show classic signs of mental splitting, which is a classic symptom of mental illness. To top it off, when he does write code, he does so in the style of the awful GNU style guide which is a crime against humanity IMHO.

So, in a nutshell:
He's a bird-fucking, self-absorbed, power hungry, toe jam eating pedophile that thinks everything should be free and everyone should be forced to share, who looks like he hasn't showered in years so as to create a static shield around his body to protect from aliens. He also created an OS without a kernel because he's basically Steve Jobs gone communist. Oh, and he calls himself doctor though he holds no PhD.

Wizards assemble !

Advanced users of GNU/Linux, remember to try Source Mage GNU/Linux. True source-based distribution that can heal broken installs. And (in contrast with Gentoo and Arch) is:

Free from obfuscated and pre-configured code.
Fully committed to GPL, and uses only free software (as in freedom) in their main package.
Even the documentation is licensed as FDL.
Without 3rd party patches, sensible defaults or masked packages.
Doesn't need obfuscated python libraries only bash.
Uses clean dependencies as they came from upstream developers, which by the same provides instant updates.
Can also use flags.

Do you like Arch Linux's AUR? Do you like Gentoo's portgage? You haven't seen anything like SMGL's "sorcery". Making "spells" to install what you want are as easy as editing files http://sourcemage.org/Spell/Book

Instead of running "sudo make install" run "sudo checkinstall" instead. This will compile install it as usual but also create a package so you can remove it easily.
