There are many Android apps that can do both, iMessage isn't even perfect in what it does. I have had times where it has taken me hours to receive a message from an iPhone user because the device tries data first and then takes fucking ages to realize that it didn't go through then resends as SMS.
Then there's the fact that if you switch to Android/Windows/anything else then the Apple servers will still hold messages sent to you by iPhone users until you log into the site and turn it off.
iMessage is a cunty messaging app, we have better alternatives that just can't compete with preinstalled.

WhatsApp is huge in Europe, although it should be avoided because it's literally spy ware: the messaging app.
Americans tend to use Kik or iMessage, Asians use Line or other apps.
