Another reason, I think, is because most people sign two year contracts and after that the phone is disposable. Batteries start dying right around that time as well. In the case of the S7 it's completely understandable because the phone is waterproof so the battery had to be sealed completely.

I'm on boost, and I'm looking for a phone from their limited selection.
I really just need something to do basic phone shit, text/calls, take some pics, browse wikipedia, and occasionally play a GBA emulator.
I'm wondering if the Moto E 2nd gen is enough to do this. I don't know much about specs, but I can't help but feel like I wouldn't need a powerful phone to do any of this.
This is coming from someone who is coming from a handmedown iPhone 4 thats long reached its lifespan.
I want something that will last me a number of years though, as well as durable enough to take a fall here and there, and last me the whole day (I use my phone to stream music often, and I probably talk 4 hours a day max on it)
Is a Moto E enough for this? It's dirt cheap ($30 online deal through boost), so I could buy it, hate it, and toss it out without caring much but I just want to get a little insight.

HTC flagships are great for audio and are in the 5 inch size range. Get either an m8 (no fingerprint) or htc 10.
My Xperia S from 2011 has finally kicked the bucket. Loved the phone until the bitter end, dropped it hundreds of times and used it in the shower despite it being before the era of waterproof Sony phones, and it still lasted a good 5 years.
Looking for something to replace it, I want something that looks good, has a nice camera, and will last me a while. Budget is around around 250-300

LG Stylo 2 (if youve gone 4 months without modifying your account) for $150 in stores. 16gb and 2gb and yes the phone flies.
Moto E is a great phone. But the Boost version is prone to being buggy you will most likely get the scraps at this point. I has the moto E and it was perfect minus no flash. But a lot of owners had to deal with quality issues.
Unless you get the Flex 2 for cheap there are no phones to last you for 3+ years.

I got a Stylo 2 about a week ago. It can play music without skipping which was my sole prerequisite for a new phone. I'm joyed to say it can play DS games flawlessly as well, at least Pokemon Gen 5 anyway. Also can take 128 GB MicroSD and 200 GB are being shipped out to stores now. 3 years ago, I bought a cheap chinese phone and the screen shattered after a minor fall. Then I bought a huawei phone (the cheapest I could find as I went abroad and couldnt use the other phone anymore)
It is still alive and is my current phone. However it is subject to random freezing, is getting slower and slower to react and is becoming a pain to use (though I only do messaging, web browsing, shitposting... The most intensive task is finding my way home using google maps).
I was getting seduced to the idea of owning a flagship for the first time...
Also there is no community to find neat stuff / begging for tech support on forums when you use a confidential phone.

That huawei being shoddy isn't necessarily the manfuactures fault. If you get the cheapest phone 3-1 years ago its going to become shit no matter which company produces it.
However, if you can afford it, get the lastest phones like Sony, HTC, LG and samsung.
My friend's S7 had a retarded screen so he went to the samsung store and they replaced it in minutes.
You wont get that with Chinkphones. If your unlucky enough to get a faulty product its a difficult process to getting it repaired. I bought my sister a meizu m2 and the screen was fucked but the repair process was so complicated and long that i accepted a 30 dollar partial refund.
Chink phones are great, unbeatable for value but you obviously sacrifice services like repair and support with it. Thats expected because infrastructure like that costs a lot and it what keeps these chink companies coming into western markets.
But if you can't afford the latest flagship, get chink phones. If you get a good phone, it wont be like your 50 dollar huawei, nor will it become obsolete in a year. These companies are huge, some of them being in the top 10 largest smartphone manufacturers. It will be reliable if you dont get a faulty product and if you dont break it. Its also got good quality components like what the major companies use, such as sony cameras and samsung screens.
Form your own opinion of phones like the Xiaomi Redmi note 3 pro though reviews on youtube or other websites.
One thing I would discourage is getting a refurbished phone. I own a refurbished laptop myself and you can get great deals but for phones I think its a different story.
First of all a phone has larger usage so it will mean more wear and tear. So:
