IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

T420 still goat edition

>>54994529

I have a T420. I want to buy a mini dock plus and attach a microphone, headphones, keyboard, mouse, and Ethernet. I think I also want to upgrade to a t430 in the near future.

Is the mini dock plus series 3 fully compatible with both t420 and t430? What about x220/x230?

Is the t430 worth upgrading to from the dankpad? How much more powerful is the nvs5400 board vs. the 4200 or in my case just hd3000? How much better is the ivy bridge chipset vs sandy bridge?
>>
>>54994634
Mini dock 3 is fully compatible with all those models.
Ivy bridge is a very minimal upgrade from Sandy. The HD 4000 is about 15% faster than the 3000.

If you are getting a **30 get the one with usb3. It will just be a usb2 port on your t420 but the dock is apparently still compatible. Get the one with 4337 in the model name, because the 4338 doesnt have audio ports.

I have a few questions about the T460p:
>Is battery life with the 6 cells battery better than the T460 with the biggest battery ?
>Is it worth it getting the default 256go ssd for 80 € more than the 500go 7200rpm hdd or if not is there any ssd model that could fit in the 2nd ssd slot with decent (128go ? 256go ? ) storage capability for under 100 euros ?

Thanks !

OK you guys finally won me over and I grabbed an X220 tablet with the dock. This machine is a workhorse, and the dock means it'll fill in as a desktop machine (since I don't play many games).

My only concern is the CPU temperature. The fan is ALWAYS audibly running. Routine browsing gets it up into the 60s C, and it hovers in the mid 90s if I'm running Minecraft. I've taken off the keyboard and blown it out with compressed air. Should I be worried? Is it worth disassembling to re-apply thermal grease?

Using it without the dock lowers the temperature a few degrees. Running a live CD of Fedora makes it a few degrees cooler, too.

1. No, it will be worse because the T460p has a quad core. Get the 72 WHr 9 cell.

2. Buy your own 2.5" SSD and fit it.
>>
Does anyone have a problem with unity being a complete fucking slow shit? Even gnome is more usable than that. It takes forever to open firefox. This is on a x230 btw.
>>
>>54996872
Your machine is five years old. Wouldn't hurt to pull it apart, thoroughly clean the fan, and apply some high quality grease.

Also, unfortunately, the X series is known for running hotter than the t series etc... just not much room in there. But new grease should help.

I currently have an unused T420 I don't want to sell, may come in handy sometime. I was thinking about using it as a server with ethernet connection, place it on the shelf next to the router and leave running 24/7. Is it a good idea? Would it be wasteful in electricity compared to a raspberry for example? It would be a web and file server, so mostly idle. Also should I leave the battery in or remove it, if I want to save electricity?

>>54997998
I see no reason that wouldn't work.

I'd remove the battery, unless you want it to act as a sort of UPS.

So I stopped playing video games, which means I can safely downgrade my computer performance wise because I'll never notice the difference.

Is the Sandy Bridge generation still the sweet spot? I'm willing to spend up to $400 on everything at least some of which will be on a battery and a good SSD.

Portability is important in the sense that I can walk a few blocks down to the library with it and bring it to school in a backpack. Don't expect a significant difference from 14" to 12.5".

I'm also totally open to Dells or HP, they seem cheaper in general but most reviews point out horrendous battery life - at least for HP.

Any advice as to what I should look at? Where is the best price/perf now? I'm considering a e6430 with a quad core

You can go all the way back to Penryn if you want, it's still good enough for regular tasks. Sandy Bridge has best price/performance, but with Lenovo's Thinkpads, the older you can tolerate, the better machine you'll get. I "downgraded" from a T420 to a T601F and have only noticed a couple of instances where the CPU performance difference is obvious, while the screen, keyboard, and overall usage experience is so much better.

I just got my X220 Tablet this week and I've been pressing it like mad, using it to boot to Linux live CDs and poke around the BIOS.

I'm hesitant to install Linux on this thing because I'm not sure which distro is going to play nice with the reversible tablet screen and the pen. So far everything works fine with Fedora except the screen won't auto-rotate to portrait mode.

Think I'll try switching out the HD and installing Linux on a spare. It'll be easy enough to go back if I need to.

X230 has USB3.0 and mildly faster CPU, notably better integrated graphics, and a bit longer battery life

/g/ I got my old T42 back that I loaned to a friend almost 3 years ago, and today managed to track down the docking station, an extended battery and a 2GB memory upgrade. It's got the Dothan 1.7 in it, running XP SP3 legal right now.

I haven't decided what to do with it other than to play old XP games on it unfortunately it only has the Radeon 7500 32mb in it. Outside has a few scratches but the rest is in good shape. I tried putting Fedora 23 on it and it ran slow as hell lol.

From what I read while building mine, you do need a Flexview screen for it to work properly at all, the T61 board seems to have problems with the 15" XGA screen from low-end T60s. UXGA is rarely found for a reasonable price, settle for SXGA+ if you have to. Don't even bother with "compatible" screens, they're trash-tier TNs worse than you can imagine.
>14" 4:3 T61 motherboard and cooler
Avoid Nvidia models, they run hot as fuck and can even outright kill themselves if you get an earlier board. Get an Advanced Dock if you want good grafix.
>Middleton's BIOS
Not necessarily required, but there's no reason you shouldn't flash it. Enables SATA II speeds and allows usage of Penryn CPUs in Merom T61 boards. Good shit.
>dremel
There's a couple bits of the T60/p chassis that need to be ground down for the T61 board to fit properly. You can find pictures that show exactly what you need to do by searching around.

Optional:
>8GB DDR2
If you have $100 to spare, go for it. Otherwise, learn to live with 4 or maybe 6GB.
>Thinkpad Advanced Dock
Also costs ~$100 for one with keys, around half that without. Allows easy eGPU setup, but has strict size and power constraints. R7 240 or maybe Radeon HD 7750 is the best GPU currently available that'll fit. Can't confirm on the 7750, it seems possible but gets dangerously close to the limits of the dock. Probably a good idea to wait and see what sort of small, low-power stuff we get out of Polaris/Pascal before buying a card. The 15" T60 frame is too long for the dock, you'll need something to give it a little height boost so the laptop doesn't strain against the dock.
>T9500 CPU
Strongest CPU the T61 was designed to use. Generally considered a waste of money because it costs twice as much as the T9300 for a measly 100MHz increase.
>>
>>54994529
Caught a lot of 3 x220 systems on eBay for $220 (har har), all without hard drives. This is what I am thinking of selling them for:
Cost = First cost + SSD + 2x8GB 1600 RAM each + repairs (1 hdd cover and 1 ram cover)
Cost = 73.33 + 100.00 + 50 + 20

With those upgrade, I will be spending something around $250 for each model.

I personally think that those upgraded specs are worth $400. Is that being too greedy? Can someone else show me some similar models from local listings in your area that disagree?

You should systemctl enable it to run on startup as a proper daemon.

>>

It means the clitmouse is registering input. It's built in to ignore the touchpad for a second after trackpoint input is detected.

I'm not sure what to do about it, probably there's a registry setting to disable that, or somehow you can make the trackpoint less sensitive

Recent Windows also disable the touchpad for a bit while you're typing unless you turn that off

Got rid of my X220 for an HP 2560p. Same type of ultraportable (12 inch, full wattage CPU, both 2012 models) but the HP has a socketed CPU.

I had the intention of making my lil' laptop a gaming powerhouse so I upped it to a quad core i7 and popped a GTX 670 onboard to work as an eGPU via the expresscard slot.

Did I dun goof? Mostly the X220 just ran too hot, the quad core perk from the 2560p is just a bonus. I will miss dat nub tho, since the HP's is meh but at least the touchpad isn't godawful like the X220's was.

Considering a T440 with the 1080p IPS display.

Anyone here who uses 1920x1080 @ 14"?

Isn't it a terrible compromise? Too high PPI for 100% scaling, too low PPI for 200% scaling.
150% scaling sucks because it blurs bitmaps that are designed for classic ~120 PPI.

2880x1800 or 1440x900 would be correct resolutions for 14", but there is no modern 14" ThinkPad with ~120 PPI _and_ IPS.

Where FireWire was mostly a niche port for professionals and enthusiasts, USB-C looks like it will be the one port to be - a lot of Android smartphones are adopting it, the new Macbook and other 'ahead of the meme' notebooks have it, and if Apple really decides to remove the 3.5mm jack, I expect a lot of Android OEMs to follow suit and use USB-C headphones.

Just got a T430 at a pawn shop, SKU is 2344BZU, now considering my options. Has all stock based on the shipping config so a Samsung 950 Pro SSD will be going in here soon enough (no m.2 slot, sadly, least I don't think it has one, still learning about it). I bumped the RAM to 8GB over the stock 4GB single DIMM, big difference when the dual channel speed kicked in so that helped.

Looks like the typical 1600x900 panel in it, Intel HD 4000 (might consider a mobo swap to get that Nvidia GPU at some point).

$220, guess it'll do me for a while. Oh, it has a 6-cell factory battery (under 2% wear so it's like brand new almost) AND it has the 12-cell slice with about 9% wear on it so, I figure I'm damned good to go for battery life. Will have to do some testing on it when I get Windows 7 installed (had Windows 8 from the factory, fuck no), might consider a Linux distro for a dual boot (I see Linux Mint MATE 16.04 is hitting beta today, might give that a go).

So far it's in near-mint condition, not a mark on it anywhere, seems to be working just fine.

So tell me, /tpg/, did I do bad or what? I saw it on the shelf and thought "Ok, that'll work..." but when the guy handed it to me and I felt the 12-cell slice underneath I was like basically the picture.

I think I did ok.
