github is a rails app, did you really expect them to put out a desktop application that was optimized? they care about rapid development, so they pick technologies they know and can iterate in faster. then they let end users deal with poorly optimized programs by purchasing better hardware. lots of games are like this too now. why optimize when it will delay release?

“Ed is the standard text editor.”

Ed, the greatest WYGIWYG editor of all.

ED IS THE TRUE PATH TO NIRVANA! ED HAS BEEN THE CHOICE OF EDUCATED AND IGNORANT ALIKE FOR CENTURIES! ED WILL NOT CORRUPT YOUR PRECIOUS BODILY FLUIDS!! ED IS THE STANDARD TEXT EDITOR! ED MAKES THE SUN SHINE AND THE BIRDS SING AND THE GRASS GREEN!!

When I use an editor, I don't want eight extra KILOBYTES of worthless help screens and cursor positioning code! I just want an EDitor!! Not a “viitor”. Not a “emacsitor”. Those aren't even WORDS!!!! ED! ED! ED IS THE STANDARD!!!

TEXT EDITOR.

When IBM, in its ever-present omnipotence, needed to base their “edlin” on a Unix standard, did they mimic vi? No. Emacs? Surely you jest. They chose the most karmic editor of all. The standard.

Ed is for those who can remember what they are working on. If you are an idiot, you should use Emacs. If you are an Emacs, you should not be vi. If you use ED, you are on THE PATH TO REDEMPTION. THE SO-CALLED “VISUAL” EDITORS HAVE BEEN PLACED HERE BY ED TO TEMPT THE FAITHLESS. DO NOT GIVE IN!!! THE MIGHTY ED HAS SPOKEN!!!

I'm not saying these things are necessary for text editors, but these features are something that I really enjoy about Atom.

>What browser rendering engine is better then?
>If they used Gecko or something it surely would have lower performance.
You missed the point. Browser tech is shit at anything beyond presenting documents with occasional light interactivity. It's closer to being a PDF than a program.

What web apps do is like building a rube goldberg machine around a paper book so you can use the book as a monitor. Pop open the hood of Chromium or Gecko some time and look at their source... it's an unholy mess despite some of the world's best software engineers working on it because it's so ill-suited to application development. These days browser engines do almost everything an OS does except in a massively inferior manner. There are many facets of browser engines that desktop OSes from 2000 did better (on vastly less powerful hardware to boot!). It can't be exaggerated how shitty web apps and modern browsers really are.

emacs isn't my cup of tea and while I've wanted to learn vim, the console-ness of the editor (even in UI clients) and the fact that its shortcuts are radically different from everything else has been a significant barrier to adoption. Give me a version of vim with a native OS text area and that'd help a lot; let me use at least *some* of the standard OS shortcuts (like Save, cut, paste, etc) and you've got something I'd have a much easier time dedicating time to learning.
