I get easily confused so please try follow me carefully:
I'm what they call a programmer so I've a rough idea how one would implement a text editor. Now, to represent one character of a text file in the editor, you need some things: The character, the background color, the foreground color, whether it's bold, italic, etc. Let's say to represent one byte of text in the editor you need 16 bytes.
This is where I get confused. If you have 7 tabs of code open, then I assume all of that code is less that 1M of text combines. So one would think that the editor needs 16M to represent the text.
Then there is probably some constant overhead per tab. Let's say that's 1M per tab, together we have 23M.
Then you have some constant overhead for all the library you have to load. I don't think that should be too much, but let's be generous and say that's another 50M.
Then we're at 73M that the program should use.
I'm curious: Where do the other 300M come from? Since you also seem to be a programmer I hope you can answer my question.

well yeah, I have sublime too for large files (like .tags files). atom chokes on them, but it handles small files good enough. But atom has better extensions.
