My number row 2 key broke. It only works if I push it down at an angle. Is there any way to fix this or is my keyboard just dying? It's like 4 years old at this point
>>
>>54840330
You can always resolder a new switch on. Shouldn't be too hard.
>>
Am I doomed to buy cherry if I want to customise my keycaps? I'm not a big fan of cherry switches in general, but all other switches either have little to no keycaps or they're impossible to find. What the heck??
>>
>>54840330
Sounds like a broken solder joint. Just open it up and resolder the joint and you should be just dandy.
>>
>>54840447
Ever considered Kailh or Gateron?
>>
>>54840447
It doesn't have to be cherry, but you'll be restricted to mx-style switches.

Or you can get a novatouch.
>>

Soldering is easy as shit, especially with something as simple as this and you can pick up a soldering iron and some solder in just about any hardware store or on the internet for 10 bucks or so.
>>
>>54840706
How do I know if it is a broken solder point? Can you see it visually?
>>
>>54840743
Depends on how large the fault is, but judging by your description I'm already quite sure it's a dead solder joint. There's not really much else that would cause such behaviour.
>>
what do you guys think about linear switches? i'm a fan of light switches and i ordered my new board with reds (coming from browns which i like).
>>
>>54841125
Linears are nice. I'd be typing on my 35g gateron clears right now if it weren't for the fact that either the hardware or the firmware or both are doing some really weird shit and I can't be bothered to troubleshoot it.
>>
>>54841368

>>54841454
mx reds are 45g, so yes, they are lighter than mx reds. 10 grams lighter to be exact.

This should be a nice step up from Browns.
>>
>>54841573
Oh, keychatter.

Your best guess be to replace the affected switches.

As for your next keyboard, I would suggest anything else than browns. If you don't mind things on the heavy side, get clears. If you want something just as light, get reds. If you want something that's light and tactile and don't mind noise, get blues. If none of those sound appealing to you I'd suggest you get a switch tester and find out for yourself.

>>54841603
Admittedly, I don't know if they're exactly 10 grams lighter, but at least that's what the named weighting suggests. I'd have to go dig up a force curve of gateron switches to confirm that.

But I can certainly tell you that they're lighter than mx reds. I have all of the switches mentioned in this post right at hand.

That keyboard is not buckling springs, and its not worth $50 let alone 75. I'd pay 5 maybe 10 for that POS.

Check the geekhack classifieds/mechmarket and put a WTB thread up for a model M. I got mine for 50 AUD which is about all they are worth and then bolt modded it myself.

In my opinion, Model M is really shit, but apparently Model F feels a lot better.

It is kinda a board that everyone has to try but I would not be so concerned to go out of your way to try it though.

hype.
>>
>>54844789
Well yeah, it seems kinda weird, especially considering that gateron make their switches a fair bit more dust tight than cherry, hence clearance issues with LEDs. A lot of people smoke in China while using their keyboard and ash was getting in the switches so gateron decided to make them nice and tight.

Kinda counterproductive in retrospect. And zeal said there isn't an actual reason, and that he'd be addressing that in the future.

I find SA to be much less comfortable to type on as well, which is why I don't really like it

And I liked the look of them originally but as I got more and more into keyboards etc.. I foundj cherry to be much better looking

yeah you get browns because you read some reddit post that says reds are best for gaymen and blues are best for typing, but browns are a perfect compromise between both!

it's not that expensive to just buy a switch tester iirc. I think I spent about 18usd from wasd and just went from there. I'm kinda glad I did it since I wasn't sure if I liked mx clears or greens when that tester came in. Especially since browns and reds felt so mushy for me, and blues didn't really feel all that great either. I mean, of course, ymmv, but I ended up with mx greens after seeing a wasd code on ebay for really cheap.

I'm seriously thinking about buying another keyboard with mx clears for work now because of that tester.

I want this. What is it called?
>>
Hi there. I've been lurking these threads for a long time, but this is my first time posting, so please be gentle.

I'm looking to buy, but I still don't know my way around.
So, here's what I'm looking for:

>Budget
Anything from 100 to 200. I'm very flexible though.

>Location (continent at least)
Spain.

>Preferred switch type
Good quality Topre or similar (see 'previous/current keyboards')

>Layout
Ideally Spanish, but I'm well aware this is complicated.
ANSI is fine.

>Form factor
80%. I really like how compact pic related looks without losing the nav keys.

>Backlight
No backlight.

>Previous/current keyboards
Steelseries 6Gv2
Not really looking for anything similar. I don't quite enjoy banging the keys against the metal, that's why I'm looking for Topre.

Then again, as I said, I'm not very knowledgeable, so perhaps there exists a switch type that's ideal for me and I don't even know.

Thanks!
>>
>>54853696

You're going to need a multimeter or some other kind of device that can tell if you current is flowing between the contacts. Though you could try simply responding the contacts and seeing if it works then. Sounds like you have some broken solder joints going on.

To the anon who told us to get EnjoyPBT dyesub keycaps instead of Granite memecaps, I'm sorry I didn't listen to you.
>>
>>54856229
I'm not sure what opening the keyboard has to do with solder joints breaking.

Solder joints break because you hammer on a key repeatedly, not because you look at them.
>>
I'm not too familiar with mechanical keyboards, but how come you guys don't have your keys in Dvorak or Colemak layout? Typing efficiency and reducing repetitive motion strain is a lot more important than good looking keycaps.

The answer to this is that you do type with the Colemak or Dvorak layout but you probably leave the qwerty key layout.
>>
>>54856343
typing efficiency isn't necessary to me
no reason to learn either of those layouts or any other
i've never seen evidence that other layouts are faster anyway, just that they can reduce fatigue

MKs are just a luxury item and fun to collect for me

>>54841454

Yes, and the upstroke is a little slow. Not as bad as some people make them out to be though but if you don't float on the switches and not bottom, out you will notice. Whether you mind is something different.

>>54852086

I wasn't too impressed with my friends WASD. The case felt kind of hollow compared to most of the higher end keyboards I've used (A little more so than the V80 even). I think its due to just a hard, thin, and light case.

I don't care for learning a whole new keyboard layout for a minor increase in typing efficiency. I'd sooner use something with a column layout instead of staggered layout.

That's a bit of a strong generalization. LEDs are perfectly fine as long as they don't scream GAYMURRR all over the place in conjunction with the rest of the keyboard.
>>
>>54861031
It was $83 shipped, was backlit, had dedicated and quiet media keys including a super nifty volume roller in good positions, and had good enough key rollover. I couldn't find anything else with those features at that price or a better price.

Everything is fine with it except for the fucking LED brightness. It really shouldn't be that hard to get right. They got it right on my damn $30 Sidewinder X4 for fuck's sake.

It was a bit of an impulse buy...

Ducky4 pbt caps, cherry clears and browns.
>>
>>54861676
You did very good. My only gripe with that thing is that they put a brown on the spacebar. Why the hell would you put a light switch on the spacebar.
>>
>>54861754
Yeah I dunno. At least browns are heavy overall. The actuation force isn't that noticeable between the clears and the browns. The only way they feel different is on the bottom half of the keypress it's obvious the clears put up more resistance.

But the browns are still heavy enough to let you rest your thumb on the spacebar without accidental presses.

Ok, my prefered switches are Zealios purples> Cherry Ergo-clears> Cherry Browns. I want single color red backlighting. I like that it's a good bit cheaper than the Das and is available with reds, but you sound like it's not a good keyboard other than having those two features. Does it having any major issues other than the backlight being too bright according to the other guy earlier?
>>
Get a refurbed K70 from Newegg. Probably the best deal out there right now.
>>
>>54868511

Depends on what size and type of switch you like, try to fill out the template in OP
>>
>>54868743
Well, I can't start the driver software for it (a non RGB version). I try to run it, but it instantly crashes. It's not needed to use the keyboard though, and I didn't want to use it. I was just looking for a way to adjust the brightness.

The reds are maybe a little louder to type with than the browns I was typing on, which matters for me at night. I think it was easier to keep myself from bottoming out with browns, and that would account for the difference, because that's what makes all the noise. This isn't a K70 centric problem though.

So, other than the LEDs being too bright (even on the lowest setting), there's nothing wrong with this keyboard. The volume roller is as wonderful as it looks.

Well, the media keys are kinda deep set. Your fingers will barely clear the top row of the number pad when you try to press them.

The row of F1-12 keys are closer to the row of 1-9 than usual, which irks me a little bit now, but I can adjust.
>>

>>
>>54869105
