What keyboard would you recommend for someone whose only experience with a mechanical keyboard was an old model M

While i liked it for typing it was just not right for playing games as the keys were too stiff.

I currently use a logitech g105 but the wasd keys are becoming incredibly squishy after all these years and i don't need all the extra keys it has anyways.

Do you guys know of a mechanical keyboard that exists with this exact key layout?

It's the keyboard I use and love and don't ever want another keyboard with a different arrangement.
>>
>>54757872
Im reading the switch guide and it seems the greens actuate at 70g. supposedly the rubberdomes i have do that at 65g

I always bottom this keyboard out so i assume i want a stiffer switch then? Because i was originally assuming i should get a blue switch

Sorry for being retarded ive pretty much just used normal 10$ keyboards before i was given this g105 5 years ago

Quickfire TK (piece of shit) or a 75% + numpad is the closest you'll get

>>
>>54758078

I dont want a space ship but i wouldn't mind it having backlit keys, not a deal breaker though. and id prefer to spend somewhere around $100 US
>>
>>54758054
I'm not sure what gives you the idea that you'd need à 3D printer for that.

Or that it'd even be a good idea to use a 3D printer. Maybe for the case, but there's nicer options out there for that too.

Buy switches
Use plate builder tool to make a plate (swillkb.com iirc) to design a plate
Have it laser cut
Put in the switches
Handwire everything with a teensy
Use TMK FIRMWARE WITH THE TEENSY
Build some kind of case (can be as rudimentary as you like)
Get some keycaps

You now have a functional keyboard.
The thing you're looking at in the OP pic was built like that (not quite finished yet).

I'm off to bed now, but it's really relatively simple business. Do some googling and leave any questions you have here and I'll answer them tomorrow.
>>

>>

So I could put the teensy there. The useless standoff leg was blocking that space and it's the perfect place for it. Not to mention that having direct access to the programming button makes things easier too.
>>
>>54758549
Couldn't you have just shaved it down? The board seems rather exposed. How is it mounted?

like fuck i would pay $400 for some shitty led minimalist case

but his pcb has slots for a good amount of different configs

>>
>>54758576
There's not as much space further down, removing that standoff was the easiest way to do it since it can connect directly to the usb cable in the same place where the original connector was.

It's not mounted on anything. It doesn't really move around due to the lack of space and the usb cable holds it in place when plughed in.

Got my younger brother one of those cheapo zhuque keyboards for $65 and what the fuck this thing feels nicer than it has any right to be. I had some MX Reds laying around so no more cheap china switches either. China stepping their game up, sorta wanna grab one for myself to mess around with
>>
>>54759822
It happened over last weekend, which means it was already crushed/recycled. Also the guys there are assholes about not letting you take items out of the storing containers ( Saw an 80s IBM PC in one, they threatened to beat me if I went in and got it).
>>
>>54759713

Its me again. Just curious, but anyone already tried to 3D print your own MK (of course, the parts that could be printed) and what about the quality?

Another question: I'm creating a hexagonal key computer keyboard. Its possible to use some HW parts of existent MK (e.g.: the circuit board) to implement such a thing just to reduce costs in a prototype? Or I'm wrong?

Right, and usually in the neighborhood of 400-500 in good condition

This is a disingenuous statement. Browns feel like dirty linears, not necessarily a poor analog of linears. Browns have more tactility than linears do, but the bump they have is so small it is hard to notice when typing at higher speeds.

it`s a great keyboard, currently my favorite mech that i`ve owned. the real greatness lies in the firmware and being able to customize it. for example my number keys are on another layer all on the home row and i have a second layer with symbols + braces etc. really comfy once you get used to it. the size is nice too makes carrying it around in my backpack with a laptop much nicer than a tenkeyless.

ortholinear layout is sooooo much nicer than staggered if you touch type. the push to access number/symbols is really not as big a deal as you think. the firmware allows you to switch layers on key tap or key press(hold). and key press switching can be a secondary function of the key. so the bottom middle 4 keys that my thumbs press are:

space(ctrl+alt) bspace(num layer) esc(symbol layer) enter(ctrl+alt)

it sounds like a bigger deal but really once you gain the little bit of muscle memory it`s just as fast if not faster than having seperate number keys

Different guy. Would you recommend the V80 over the KUL ES-87?
>>
>>54775459
60.
>>
>>54775526
Depends.
Tactile switches? KBP V80 with Matias QC. Best tactile switch around imo. If I had to compare them, they are most similar to ergo-clears in Cherries lineup.
Clicky switches? Cherry clicks aren't as sharp as Matias clickys, many people prefer that, I don't. Matias is more tactile and the click is crisper, I guess a YT vid can help you.
Linear ones? Whichever you can get with Gaterons. Now I'm not somebody who hates on Cherry, I really like their ergo-clears and vintage blacks are pretty neat too, but their current linear lineup is shit.

If you are set to get Cherry switches, then I guess I'd get the Kul, but that's only because I heard good things about it. If you aren't and want tactile/crisp clickys V80 MTS all the way dude.
>>
does anyone have a b mini or a redscarf? what do you think of it? im thinking about picking one up for my next board
>>
>>54775735
Thank you. I've been drawn to the KUL ES-87 by reading a review on the KBP V80. It looks like the ES-87 has a sturdier feel and the review hints that it is a very good base for customibility. Will I have the same freedom with a V80? I partiularly like being able to swap the backspace with a backslash and ctrl for caps lock, I do this currently with keybindings on my thinkpad. I was planning on getting my own keycaps too, I'm a fan of beige.

This would be my first mech keyboard so I don't have any physical experience or knowledge about switches, I only know from a bit of research. Should this make a difference in my purchasing options?
>>
>>54776019
you can always just do that with sharp keys

Capslock as CTRL is possible with the KBP (I think, the V60 can, so the big brother should too). I don't think Backspace and Backslash are changeable though.

If you want other keycaps, you pretty much need Cherry/Gateron switches. Matias is pretty limited in that regard.

Well the switch is the most important part, isn't it. It's basically the reason to go mechanical at all. It's really hard to explain the differences between switches, but you should at least know whether you want linear, tactile or clicky ones.

So... I know this probably isn't the best place to ask since it's MECHANICAL keyboard general, but I don't really know where else to ask.

I'm trying to find a good chicklet keyboard for gaming. See, it doesn't really NEED to be for gaming specifically, but I need one that doesn't have fucking ghosting. I bought a logitech keyboard that has backlit LEDs that's pretty comfy, but doesn't support W+SHIFT+SPACE because it's 1995 apparently. If any of you guys have any suggestions or at least somewhere else I could ask or look for some, I'd really appreciate it. Amazon has nothing noteworthy besides a shitty razor one.
>>
>>54776116

I got mine for like 73 with an employee discount (frys), but even at full price that shit is a good investment to keep from making crap solder joints.

Now I just need to cut myself a plate and buy a bag of tac greys and I'll be on my way to nirvana

Newfag here, need to know shit. I'm learning how to code later than most and I want to improve my typing skills. I want a mechanical keyboard and if you search "top ten mechanical keyboards" on YouTube all of them talk about gaming keyboards like Corsair and Razr and stuff. The led's may be a little too flashy though and I'm worried there's a stigma against them in the tech community I may not be aware of. Since no one is talking about them here, I feel like they may be frowned upon? What can I do to improve my typing and what kind of keys would be best for someone who does a lot of coding and writing.

Also, why do some of you remove access to many keys, wouldn't it be more inconvenient to hold down a key to access numbers and symbols? Forgive my ignorance, I really just don't know where to start because every online source seems to be tugging me in a different direction. I want something that looks great, feels great, is sturdy, and is accommodating to someone who wants to up their typing game.

What's the best keyboard you've ever used /g?
Also why do you dislike backlighting?

I bought a pok3r with MX Clears, and it seems some of the keys are easier to press than others. Also, I feel it's a bit too hard to press. I love the tactile feedback, so is it worth returning it and getting MX browns? I've heard browns are far less tactile. Also, I can't do ergo clear
stuff so that's out of the picture.
>>

Not mechanical, at least I don't think, but nice looking. It uses vaccume tubes. My boss says they run about 2 grand. I can't even find them on the internet. I want to take it home and put a wood body on it but I don't even know how to make it run on a computer.

It's called a BC-250 keytronics selectron.
>>
>>54776988

It's probably mechanical, but most of Keytronic's boards from that era were mushy foam and foil, with few using magnetic reed switches.

They might have been 2 grand new, but sell between 50-200 these days. If you can show under a cap (or better yet the PCB inside the case) I can tell you a lot more. Should just be a few normal screws.
>>
I am having a problem with my some of the keys on my keyboard getting stuck. I haven't spilled anything on it so I am not sure what is exactly causing it. The one thing I have noticed is that it only seems to happen when it is cold.

The reason MX switches can't be that good at tactility is because their design mandates that the switch be linear after the actuation point.
Neither Topre nor ALPS suffers from this.

Yeah, I learned that the hard way. I considered making ergo clears, but then I realized that having lighter springs won't fix the underlying problem.

Mechanical keyboards won't make you better at typing.

Use the buyer's template that's in the OP if you want a recommendation.

I decided that I would reward myself with a nice mechanical keyboard once I feel like my touch typing is better than my advanced hunt and peck. The time is nearing!

Are there any mechanical keyboards with trackpoints?
