Nostalgia is a lie. The web wasn't better in 1997, you have just retroactively removed all the bad memories. This is only going to lead to ageism, trust me on this. Except you won't, go join some faux facebook circlejerk and keep reposting the same 5-10 images.

Here's some top tips you've conveniently left out as you meander down psuedo memory lane
>Browsing sites on sub 56K
>No videos above 300x300, download is 2-3 years, have to have a certain media player to view it that only each play one media format type
>No web standards, nobody obeying the few ones there are, sites consist of giant "CLICK HERE IF YOU'RE USING X BROWSER" and they have to make six copies of everything because browsers don't even honor standard html tags
>No competent search engines

Best of all there was no cheap tech yet. Cry and whine your irrelevant little ass off about how "normies ruined the net", then crack open that old best buy ad you keep masturbating to and actually read the prices and not just look at the pictures. Would you pay $3,000+ now for the most basic, entry level desktop? This isn't a workstation, it's garbage consumer hardware that barely lasted 5-6 years and even if it did, you were fucked because during your "golden age" of tech, it was impossible to buy anything at any time without it being obsolete. Keep in mind these are 90's dollars so it would be 4-5K we're talking about.

Most neo-luddites would insist this was a good thing because it "keeps the normies out". Again nostalgia is oh so perfect, you conveniently blot out your dad/parents had to drop his hard earned cash on this for everyone, to have it be worthless a year later and you remember it as being free and it just appeared one day. *You* were the normies that invaded the internet at the time, ask any eternal september fuck when they're not jacking each other dry. Instead, you call yourselves pre-smartphoners.
>>
I miss geocities.
>>
>>54746594
No you don't. Go download the torrent archive and actually browse it. Your memories have had 15 years to mold the shit you saw into something else.
>>
>>54746582
I think it's a mix.

Some memories, even the bad ones, are pretty funny looking back on them now. I didn't block out all that stuff, but the amount I was able to tolerate was amazing compared to now where I get agitated when HD video won't load properly.

Chill.

>I get agitated when HD video won't load properly

>>
>>54746621
>Bad memories, looking back on them now, are pretty funny!
This is the "lie" that nostalgia teaches you to tell yourself. I've known victims of abuse talking about it as a positive experience, as long as it happened 20 years ago. Also seen veterans talk about getting shot as a positive experience. Yeah sure. Honestly whenever someone starts a story off with "Back then..." I just mentally replace it with "I've forgotten everything bad, ignore me"
>>
>>54745930
>Slow internet

>>54746653

Why stop with videos, let's also do pictures too. You cannot just cut out an entire subsection of media. Unless you are a nostalgiafaggot of course. Just call videos "harmful" to show your neo-ludditry so everyone can more quickly ignore you. Best way is the freetard way, pretend you care about this, and since there were no decent free formats back then, everything must be taken out and ruled away as if it didn't exist.

Baby boomers are going to die and/or stop "working" in their industries in the next 15-20 years and that will be a golden generation who can actually work with people without having to deal with the constant

How old people work:
>They make mistakes for 40-80 years
>Choose to call this "experience"
>You on your smartphone, google it (fukken kids amirite) and get information and along with it don't have a social disease that tells you not to listen to new information that isn't just made up fear/FUD
>Don't make the same obvious mistakes
>Start to have a better life at 30~ than they did at 50

today's internet is demonstrably better than it was in the 90s in many ways. not least of which being its fast and not dial-up. There's a lot more content, though it seems like the signal-to-noise ratio has gone down. e-commerce is an everyday thing instead of an exotic dream.

what's been lost was the wild-west experience. In the mid-90s government and law enforcement didn't really have any idea what this internet thing was. The DMCA wasn't a thing until 1998. You could just pirate stuff without worrying about crypto. People traded CP in AOL chatrooms. Nothing was tied to your real identity, nobody had figured out all the tracking shit they do today.

whether that means things have gotten better or worse is up for debate.

most IRC users I see just use it alongside whatever other social media
as for BBSes (like, standard web forums, right? because no one fucking uses dial-in BBS services in 2016), why would they be touted as superior to everything else? It fills a different communication niche to most modern social media sites due to most boards focus on specific topics

I miss the innocence that encompassed the internet back then, although I'm certainly glad the technology around it has matured significantly since then for the better.

I remember my first web search on Yahoo, which was simply "HORSE"

You know what came up? I can assure you it wasn't nagger dick like it would be today. Instead it was some angelfire-tier website about horses, probably designed in Publisher '97 and posted with FrontPage or some shit. Nevermind the fact that FrontPage might not have existed for at least another yet, it's irrelevant to the experience.

In fact it was the experiences of my youth and those growing up tinkering with computers which led me to get into the field of IT. I cruised through my degree and then all I get in return is sales work and bullshit crypto viruses and god knows what other pajeetware fires out of the asscrack of the dark net. I did not sign up for this shit. No, should have been an engineer instead. Or maybe even a god damn truck driver.

Fuck 1997. It was all a ruse and now I'm stuck being eternally made with my short sighted decision making.

I miss 1997 because I was still playing doom, quake, and castle of the winds on pc, and (starting in 1998) pokemon on the gameboy. The best season of DS9 started in 1997. First Contact had just been in the movies. The only bad thing about the internet back then was dial up/phones and my parents getting mad when they wanted to call somebody. Also Columbine caused my mother to ban computer games for a month. I'm not sure if that was 1997 though, I think it was 1998.

Similar story, I was real young at the time, back in the tail end of 2003. A friend of mine kept alluding to some anime-focused image board. Eventually got a link to it and I've been a horrible degenerate ever since.

>No videos above 300x300, download is 2-3 years, have to have a certain media player to view it that only each play one media format type
man, I don't miss this
tiny, ugly, 160x120 Cinepak encoded video that took literally an hour to download and was like two minutes long, and took more space than a 1280x720 webm at middling-low quality
and anyone who used the RealPlayer formats should have fucking killed themselves, what a shit piece of software, was probably the first actively bad piece of software I'd used, rather than merely deeply flawed

>Would you pay $3,000+ now for the most basic, entry level desktop?
or this
admittedly, things got a shitton better on that regard by the time 1997 rolled around, and you could reasonably get an entry-level machine for sub-$1000, a $2-3k machine would be entry level in 1992 or '93

Would that sub-$1k machine it be obsolete in a year? Sure, but you needed a machine now, and it'd be pretty useful for the next four years, and vaguely (if not terribly) useful for four years after that, and it's not like the $2k machine would have much of a longer useful life.
The absolute best thing about tech today is just how fucking cheap computers and shit have become. You can literally get a machine that'll do most shit a normalfag would want to for $200, apart from gaming, and you could even (with minor patience) do shit like video editing on in far better than you could on a high-end rig from '97.

Really, most of the things I miss from that period are the aesthetic of things, big and chunky and futuristic in a different way. The actual things themselves are quite literally objectively worse. The two popular consumer OSes of the time (Windows 95, System 7) were unstable pieces of shit. Clock speeds were garbage. Devices were bulky and heavy. Cellphones were barely beginning to become common, and wouldn't really become ubiquitous until around 2003, and living without a cell was a right pain.

4chan is quite literally usenet. We have the same stupid flame-war type stuff like:

Remember, 18 year old, if you're still here, that ageism is the last acceptable form of discrimination. It's the last acceptable label that we still allow people to put on others.

>Why didn't you hire him?
>He's black
lawsuit

>Why didn't you hire him?
>He's not a she
lawsuit

>Why didn't you hire him?
>He's too young
Perfectly acceptable! You will see some weasel/cocksucker words along with this to try to pretend it isn't discrimination:
>We feel that other companies will look at you and feel that we are hiring inexperienced people
"I'm not ageist, it's just everyone else is! (I'm a piece of shit)"

Bonus other funny part is that you're currently living in this quantum bullshit state:
>...We need a young person, they know how to do technology!
>hurr hurr u not old enuf (I'm a piece of shit)

Last bonus other funny part is that this is 4chan, we are anonymous, we are this way because we eliminate race, gender, looks etc... the posts are taken at face value and we don't mind anything... but not age! Fuck that! You're "allowed" to be on here if you're over 18 but must use the site in read-only mode until you are at a more acceptable age of 25, that I made up, because I am a piece of shit.

I very much do, because computers were fucking expensive and my family didn't own one. Instead I had to use lab time at school and it was through that which I was able to get on the internet for the first time. Just because you're so jaded doesn't mean everyone else is.

Not at any point trying to defend anyone under 18 coming here as that is a explicit rule, we were talking about someone now moving the goalposts and moving that up to 25.

You guys should do this if you haven't already, I always get a kick out of it - look up generations.

Baby boomers are always anyone born from 1946 and 1964. NOTHING ELSE IS THIS CONCRETE.
Boomers = 1946 - 1964 for sure!
Gen X = 1960s - 1975?
Gen Y = 1980s - 1995??
Millenials (this is used 99% of the time as a four letter word please don't pretend it's not) - After 1995? After 2000? Who knows!

This one's the best because it's the current one. At first, it was anyone born after the millenium, that at least makes sense. Now some old people are all angry that they can't put labels on some people and move the goalposts and instead say, "You have to have been an adult BEFORE the millenium". What's an adult? 25 according to this thread. That means even if you were born in 1991 you could be a "millenial". What happened to Gen Y?

"Gen X" and "Gen Y" were the old labels that boomers made up to shit on anyone younger than them and are obsolete and have been replaced by something new. Notice how with every source you look up online, the boomer dates are concrete set in 1946 to 1964. Everything else is wishy washy because boomers started the whole thing. Nobody gives a fuck about this until you turn 40-50 and start getting bitter that you haven't accomplished anything, so you form an instant cop out by instead saying "millenials today right?"

In 20 years they'll say Gen Z'ers weren't really adults until 50 so anyone born 1986 or later is now instead a Gen Z'er.

>Members of Generation Z are typically thought of as being comfortable with technology

>and interacting on social media websites for a significant portion of their socializing
"Kids these days and their internet socialising that *I* don't understand!"

>Australia's McCrindle Research Center defines Generation Z as those born between 1995–2009,A previous McCrindle report used 2001 as the starting point for this generation.
they don't even know

>Adweek defines Generation Z as those born in 1995 or later. Many other researchers also put the starting date for Generation Z at around the mid-1990s
I'm explicitly letting you know that this new generation starts right on this particular 5-7 year period

>Statistics Canada defines Generation Z as starting with the birth year 1993.

but wait we must shit on people not born yet
>call anyone born after 2010 a part of Generation Alpha.
Can't find what comes next online, nobody's been born yet for us to hate on. Assuming it's Beta.

so mr. 18 year old - depending on how old the sad sack of shit you're talking to is, you can be a Gen Y, Z, millennial all at once. But the sack of shit in question will always be a baby boomer born between certain made up concrete dates that were absolutely set in stone decades after the fact.

Millennials are Gen Y. Gen Y was just a placeholder name. They say 1980-2000 or so, but it seems to more identifiably be people born from the mid-80s to mid 90s or so with the first few and last few years being on a cusp. I'd say by 84/85 you definitely aren't gen-X anymore and are millennial.

I miss the special feeling of going online.

You felt more invested, because you had to dial up, you had to wait for the connection and the website to load, you had to wait for emails to come through etc etc.

Now that we're online 24/7 and web pages can be opened, skimmed through in a second and forgotten, it just doesn't feel special anymore. I also hate that everything has become commercialised. Nobody is interested in looking at websites made by individuals, and nobody makes the effort to make them.

It's a little sad that most songs you downloaded from the late 90s to early 2000s will sound like shit now because MP3 encoders at the time were so bad and most people encoded music at 128kbps. When I listen to ancient music I downloaded years ago they have a bunch of static and it's noticible on earbuds/headphones that cost more than $5.

Music encoded to 128kbps on modern MP3 encoders like LAME sound pretty great though.

So the internet being slow, you not knowing how to use webrings, and technology being more expensive makes the 90's worse?

I will give you the first point regarding speed, but the more expensive tech you are whining about was far better built and that shit lasted forever even if it got dated sooner; not to mention it provided local jobs. Compare that to our modern throw away consumer grade tech made in third world countries, there was a reason shit costed more.

Now when you compare the issues of the 90s to our modern web issues you can easily see why people non ironically defend the internet as it was. In case you forgot here is a very small sample of the issues we face now:
>Mass surveillance
>Social media cancer
>Gentrification of content
>Content mills and click bait
>Erosion of anonymity and privacy
>Bloated web design loaded with scripts
>Advertising that stalks you
>Over legislation of the net (State level anti-hurt feeling laws, broadening of the CFAA between 2001-2008, DMCA, Patriot Act)
>Geofencing

I'm not sure if more people "had a brain" or not but people on the internet back then could have seemed more intelligent because there was way less kids with internet access. Of course, everyone had their own website and lots of communities to choose from. Now it's all controlled by a few "social" networks all controlled by porky.

Fuck that shit.

Around 1999, I downloaded a ZIP extractor from some download website. It looked pretty legit and worked pretty well. Well after a few weeks, my computer BSODs, then it literally wouldn't turn on anymore. Tried to insert boot diskettes, nothing ever came up. Ended up having to purchase a brand new computer.

Viruses you find on the web today are pretty bad, but viruses from the late 90s - early 00s are much, much worse.

indeed, 20 years ago you could browse the web on a 486 with a 14.4kbps modem just fine. all these js/jquery-infested modern websites take a long time to load on my 100mbps connection, and they're so heavy that the browser grinds to a halt even though I have a hex-core xeon and 12gb of ram.

I'm against nostalgia in general but saying the Internet was the same back then is utterly retarded.

Yeah, when I finally got a laptop of my own and moved out I was so fucking happy just to have the freedom to rock out with my cock out whenever I wanted. Of course now that I'm not an adolescent anymore it doesn't really mean anything to me, but 18 year old me was ecstatic.

Had a few close calls when I had a family computer, though. Thankfully I was able to get my pants up over my thighs at the speed of sound when mom came home from work early, so it at least didn't look quite as obvious. She didn't seem to notice, and if she did notice she didn't really care because at least she didn't find her son mid-orgasm.

I didn't fuck with Runescape. Didn't care then, don't care now.

No Wikipedia, school assignments. Emulators and roms. IRC.

My bitch sister telling me that I'm doing things wrong all the time, when I know exactly what I'm doing (she thought editing some config files for a stupid game meant editing system files and I would just break it, she thought we would have to pay extra bills for using IRC). I still like it better now.

Sounds more like a shit driver. Windows 95 drivers and most 98 drivers used the VxD device driver model which allowed direct access to the hardware, that is why they BSODed so often. Shit drivers with direct hardware access.

XP was so stable in comparison because Windows 2000 and up dropped support for VxD and replaced it with WDM, which was introduced in windows 98. WDM has a buffer between the hardware and the driver.

Nah. A few years after the computer got wrecked I actually found out it was due to a virus called "Chernobyl" or some shit like that. The motherboard my old computer had was listed as vulnerable to the virus, and the time it was spreading around was consistent with when the computer got ruined.

Really nice to know this kind of shit can't happen anymore, at least.

Destructive viruses still exist, but they are less common as there is no financial gain. Hobby virus writers are mostly dead.
