so I'm looking at galaxy s5 on amazon. what's the difference between T-Mobile and unlocked. I'm on T-Mobile btw so it doesn't matter right now. Would it affect my ability to switch to another provider? Does it affect the bootloader or android version? I heard the s5 got android N on it recently

Alright guys, looking for a smartphone:
- Phone size limit is Samsung S7 (non edge), can't go bigger than that.

Any suggestions?

G4 is very good for the price of a one year old flagship and has a top-tier camera. You can get it one for $200 on ebay. Just have to ask around to to see which ones were made after september to get around the bootloop issue.

Not anymore. Every since normies discovered they could torrent their shitty yify movies and normies of thrones episodes onto their phones to watch on bed microsd cards have pretty much been the rave for the last few years. Also because pic related exist.

>>
>>54745112
Because it doesn't have a microsd slot. You can LITERALLY buy non-chink 128GB microsd cards with 70MB/s transfer speeds for $30 and sometimes less when they go on sale.

By next year you'll be stuck with 16/32GB of storage while samshit unveils their 320GB microsd card that can be used on $30 android phones.

You're literally cucking yourself to death if you get a phone without a microsd slot. The cloud is a piece of shit and spies on you 24/7.

not him but I used to think exactly like you. Thought I could tough it out with my nexus 5x. Then my music library started growing and I wanted to watch movies on my phone offline. Space was very limited, only had 8GB to work with after system and apps used half the storage space.

Finally accepted defeat last year and sold my nexus 5x and got a Sony Z3 + 128gb microsd card. Best decision of my life.

Thing is it's always good to have the microsd slot just in case.

>>
>>54745344
MX Player on HW+ mode.

Though honestly some video codecs do not have hardware acceleration and must be decoded by the CPU alone so if you have a shit phone CPU there is not much you can do. VP9 and 10-bit H264/HEVC can only be decoded by the CPU for example so playback will suck no matter what if your phone has a shitty CPU especially if resolution is above 1080p.
>>
>>54745387

Get a second hand G4 or M9 off swappa or craigslist imo they're both cheap and pretty great

G4:
>(+)Great camera
>(+)Great performance
>(N)Okay audio
>(-)Mediocre build quality
M9:
>(+)Sturdy build quality
>(+)Great audio and speaker
>(N)Screens smaller
>(-)Mediocre camera

If it counts for you the M9 has better support on xda, and you can convert any of the gsm phones to a dev edition for fast updates.
But if you want that the M8 would be cheaper and has a dev community triple the size of the M9 or G4

Newfag to phones here, I don't know much at all about them really. Purchasing advice would be great since it's about time I switch phones. Country is Indiana, carrier is AT&T, size and budget don't really matter and what I'm looking for is something really customizable, being able to tweak icons and colors for messaging, browsers, animations, etc. Just anything I can fuck around with really. Also not a big fan of iPhones it's what I'm upgrading from. Sorry if the specs are a bit vague.

G4 is really great phone, no doubt, but wish there was 8-core CPU and either lowered resolution to FHD or more powerful battery. WiFi + browsing on 30% brightness makes lose 1% of battery every 1.5-2mins, could've been better, but I guess I'll learn something useful from my own mistakes.

I was looking at the Ankers since I already made a chink order and wouldn't want to wait another 4 weeks for something to get here. A 10k mAh charger off amazon is only like $18.50.

I've also considered getting a bigger battery, but then you have to deal with expanded cases. I'll probably swap out for a G5 or whichever phone is easy to root for my next one in a few years.

Just graduated college and landed myself a great job. Going to be getting my first smartphone soon. Needs to work on Verizon.

The most important thing for me is reliability and ruggedness, recommend me a phone that will last me for the next four years. (I've had my current flip phone for 8 years and it's still running strong.)

I've been using a few android devices for years so I definitely want to go with that, along with not spending too much money.

Also what about plans? I've been on unlimited text and talk for $10/month my whole life and have no idea what the good choices are for switching to data.
>>
>>54752227
>Install a custom kernel
Have no idea what is is and how to install it. Might as well leave it untouched. Also, my phone is brand new (like few days since got it) and is covered under 2 year warranty, so don't want to void it.

>>54752244
>Yeah, I'm just considering getting a compact powerbank for it as backup.
Good idea, but again, additional stuff to carry with yourself, kinda uncomfortable. I expected G4 to be real good since this phones is for business/power users, so should stay long on battery and then it's other way around. Atleast it has superb camera.

I agree, it should have had a option to lower the resolution to save power like aforementioned, but the features are pretty great and it's solid. I think the V10 is unlocked but it's twice the price of the G4 for only some moderate changes.

I'm about to pull the trigger on either an LG G5 or a HTC 10.
It's go to last at least 2 years, which would fare better?
>>
>>54752933
Does HTC has removable battery? No? Then pick LG. After some time, battery starts to lose its potential and basically will drain power even faster, then you just buy another one and replace.
>>
>>54752984
Right.
Both have a microSD port and the G5 has an IR blaster.
G5 it is.

Exactly what this person said. My s5 went from lasting about a day and a half a day to 8 hours. Then I slammed it into the wall and got a g4. I'm liking it.

Also I had an app on my old phone where I could download apks. It had a huge w in the logo. Anyone know what it is.

>>54752870

>>54752933
The HTC won't fail in two years but you'll be safe with the g5 even with theirs messed up modular design. The dac better design (imo) and probably better speakers (while being more quiet than others) isn't reason enough to spend more money. I think both will get fine custom rom support.
>>
>>54753066
Yeah man, I'm curious about the B&O DAC you can get. I wonder if it'll be able to drive my DT 880 Pros
>>
>>54752933
G5 goes with wide-angle camera and removable battery. The rest is pretty similar. If these two things don't matter to you, just pick the one you like more.

Go to the retail store and take both in your hand, see which phone fits your hand better. You'll know instantly which one to buy.
>>
>>54753126
If you think about getting the dac you could directly go for the 10
>>

>Go to the retail store and take both in your hand
THIS THIS THIS
It's VERY important. When I saw specs of some HTC phone being at almost 10mm of thickness I declined this as an option. When I was randomly at shop checking out devices, I picked up HTC, fuck how good it was sitting in my hand and almost 10mm thickness wasn't noticeable at all.

Hi /g/entlemen.

I broke my Nexus 4 2 weeks ago and to this day, I've been using my girlfriend's old moto g (1st gen 3G).

Wow.

I like everything about it... but the screen is broken (still water resistant !).

Which phone should I buy ?

It has to :
- be sub $200
- have a 4.5 to 4.8" screen
- have a >= 720p resolution
- have a great community on XDA ("long time support")
- have an excellent battery life
- be rootable
- be the nearest to stock android
- be the more future-proof
- be resistant

Thank you !
