Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

IRC connection details:
Server: chat.freenode.net:6667 (no SSL, 6697 for SSL) - Channel: #flt
If you don't have an IRC client (which you should), go to https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/flt to use IRC on a web client.

Let's not worship the false god
>>
>>54666835
is he whistling at a moth?
>>
How come every time I try to install a distro the installer wants internet access, but I never have it?
So far I've only been able to figure out how to properly install mint because the wireless broadcom drivers are included in the live USB.
If I wanted to install a different distro how would I get the wireless drivers if internet isn't working at all?
>>
>>54666835
Should I switch to Linux even if I am not pedo, terrorist or I do not have any illegal data on my PC?
>>
>>54666930
Let's not worship software developpers/activists as though they were gods.
>>
>>54666979
Why do you think it would be a good idea to use linux if you're a pedo/terrorsit/have illegal stuff on your PC?
>>
>>54666971
Depends which distro, they should have some documentation about how to load firmware needed. Debian does, although I couldn't get it to work last time I tried, some just work like manjaro, and some are easy enough with loads of documentation like arch, gentoo.
>>
>>54666979
No. You can leave now.
>>
>>54666971
Which distro do you want to install?
Usually, the distros have an online wiki with information on how to troubleshoot such problems.
>>
>>54666930
let's not restrict ourselves to one god. Polytheism is way more fun because you're gods get to have fights, and sex, and stuff. Monotheism ends up with schizo gods (witness the christian trinity, in which god is three different entities).

>>
>>54667010
So this isn't uncommon?
I thought installing distros like Ubuntu and mint was supposed to be easy and painless but it took me like an hour to figure out how to get the wireless drivers working properly.

>>54667029
I originally wanted to install lubuntu. I actually think that there was a problem with how I was creating the live USB though. Missy guides said the driver was included in the USB, but whenever I opened the USB it was missing files that the guide said to go through to find the drivers.
>>
>>54666971
Ethernet? I believe the intel wifi drivers are in the kernel now, also atheros drivers for usb dongles have been in there for years.
Also subnet, some people have mentioned that tethering your phone works in the installer.

I tried using an Ethernet cable but it didn't work.
I think there was something wrong with the cable though.
>>
>>54667055
>So this isn't uncommon?
It varies but depends on your hardware. I've had the same problem where it is supposed to work and doesn't. Usually if you can connect with a cable the wifi will work once it is installed in those cases.

Because it is free as in freedom.

Since anons periodically pop up asking for hardening and whatnot advice here is a new auditing/IDS system based on sysdig: https://github.com/draios/falco
Probably only really appropriate on appliance servers and containers though.
>>
>>54667055
You could just install it without internet, then do
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

It'll have the same effect.

gentoo was written, from scratch, by Emil Brink. The first line of code was written on May 15th, 1998. It is my first program to use the GTK+ GUI toolkit, my first program to be released under the GPL, and also my first really major Linux application. However, it is not my first program! ;^) I've been writing (increasingly complex) code for almost two decades now. I have recently finished my Master of Science degree in Computer Science and Engineering at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.

PROTIP:
man gentoo

Linus writes beautiful code. He has published some side projects that he wrote all on his own and the code is just wonderful. He also lives in the real world while still maintaining his open source ideals and supporting himself through his work.

RMS is basically a homeless loser who hasn't made any real contributions in the last 20 years. He is still super butthurt that Linux beet HURD (but hey, HURD just got basic sound support in 2016!) and basically tries to claim Linux because Linus used GCC and the GNU coreutils. He survives on the charity of others and speaking engagements where he spouts his insane, paranoid, philosophy. Basically he won't be happy until all the programmers are homeless hackers like him and all the companies are shut down. How people are supposed to support themselves and their families in that scenario aren't things he has to deal with because he is basically a permanent grad student. He does make some good points about privacy, but for him, there is no middle ground. Anything that may reduce your privacy even the slightest bit (like movie recommendations on Netflix) is evil according to him, and must be destroyed. In a lot of ways he show classic signs of mental splitting, which is a classic symptom of mental illness. To top it off, when he does write code, he does so in the style of the awful GNU style guide which is a crime against humanity IMHO.

So, in a nutshell:
He's a bird-fucking, self-absorbed, power hungry, toe jam eating pedophile that thinks everything should be free and everyone should be forced to share, who looks like he hasn't showered in years so as to create a static shield around his body to protect from aliens. He also created an OS without a kernel because he's basically Steve Jobs gone communist. Oh, and he calls himself doctor though he holds no PhD.

I want to run a terminal with some commands on startup (I'm just fucking around), the problem is when this is run
urxvt -e bash -c "toilet --gay -f future 'Wellcome, master.' && screenfetch && bash"

it is supposed to open up a terminal, display a message and run screenfetch, and then allow me to continue using the shell, but the screenfetch displays that whole command as the shell like this
Shell: bash c toilet --gay -f future 'Wellcome, master.' && screenfetch && bash

instead of just
  Shell: bash 4.3.30

I get that this has something to do with how screenfetch detects the shell, is there a way to fix this without tinkering with the screenfetch script?

While the artice is out of date, it doesn't lose any value. The new Microsoft partner Canonical gives a shit about freedom and Ubuntu is perverting the whole idea of GNU/Linux systems; it's teaching it's users to care about gratis software instead of free software.

The Amazon lense happening is unforgivable.
"If we can only say, “free software won't spy on you, unless it's Ubuntu,” that's much less powerful than saying, “free software won't spy on you.”"

The Microsoft Canonical partnership is about Windows, not Linux. Its intention is to have Bash and other Ubuntu utilities run natively on Windows. This does not affect Ubuntu Linux in any meaningful way. Just like the Chinese Ubuntu Kylin didn't affect the general version (and the government of China is worse than MS believe you me).

The shopping lense was lame but it's disabled by default and being removed with the next version of Unity. You can mock the statement but it doesn't make it any less true.

That's Microsoft's fault. They don't release their ".docx" as open source, so the free software supporters would have to reverse engineer it, but they have no reason to not support .odf format, since it's open source.

That's like saying it's Microsoft's fault for not enabling Windows Phone on iPhone hardware. They can't do anything about it, plain and simple.
If you let yourself believe that now and always you need to work with MS Office then just give up and accept your fate. But don't complain the next time Microsoft does something you don't like, you have voluntarily chosen your fate.

This sounded like BS but I couldn't be sure without google.
Sure enough, first result:

"Office Open XML (also informally known as OOXML or OpenXML or earlier as MOX[2]) is a zipped, XML-based file format developed by Microsoft[3] for representing spreadsheets, charts, presentations and word processing documents. The format was initially standardised by Ecma (as ECMA-376), and by the ISO and IEC (as ISO/IEC 29500) in later versions."

After getting a new phone running android two weeks ago, I noticed that phones nowadays could actually do most of what I do with my computer.

So I came to the conclusion that I have no excuse to not give gnu/linux another try. My main OS so far has been OS X on my hackintosh.

I installed linux mint, and after spending the day setting stuff up and fixing things that weren't quite working out of the box (though most things were, I was especially impressed by the fact that external sound card didn't require any drivers and just werked right away) I have to say that I could easily see this becoming my main OS.

It's not quite as comfy and justwerks as OS X, but it does a damn fine job and I feel like the lack of justwerks is a fair trade-off for the power I've gotten as a user.

No questions for now, just felt like letting you know.

Fedora believes in "software freedom" - that is, restricting user software choices to those deemed appropriately licensed by The Powers That Be.
Arch believes in "freedom", as well - the user has control over his or her system and can do what he wants with it.

Freedom is not:
>"I can do whatever I want."
a) There are things you really can't do, like buying a car when you're poor, etc. following this logic, poor people could never be free.
b) Freedom of choice/doing whatever you want is anarchism, which itself always leads to slavery.

Freedom is:
>"I'm not a slave."
To stay free, you need restrictions that protect you from getting enslaved.

I remembered feeling like this maybe 8 or so years ago when I first tried using Linux.

It was weird because after thinking about it enough I realized that the reason I was feeling that way was because of the times when I was just bored and wouldn't know what to do, you often spend time clicking around say the start menu or something.

Instead of treating your PC as a playground to find something to do, try to decide what you want to do _first_, then go do it.
When I realized that everything started making more sense.

I don't know what the default OpenSUSE installation is like. But if you think it's lacking in pre-installed software then maybe a different distribution would be better for you? Like Ubuntu or Linux Mint maybe?

I can plug / unplug my K3565 at Ubuntu / Windows and they don't have this problem.
The chatscript works if I reboot the router, but that sounds dumb so yeah, I investigate the chatscript.

It seems Windows, OpenWRT and Arch have different "chatscript".
For now I'll try to mod OpenWRT's chatscript and see if that fixes the issue.

How do I get redshift to begin on startup? Or more specifically, how do I get this command

Problem is, you can only add actual program that you've installed (as far as I know) and if I select redshift, it will just try to run redshift with no other options. Since redshift needs root to find my location, it doesn't work. That's why I need to run

Question for Arch users:
How often does it break and how much tinkering is needed for daily stable use?
Been thinking about switching from *buntu (read: Mint) to Arch but I am concerned about what I read about the amount of daily tinkering and breaking it due to the rolling updates.
I am one of those who need a stable machine and don't have the time/patience to spend 10hrs a week maintaining and fixing it.
I like the idea of simple, clean OS without all the bloat *buntu throws at me though...

TL:DR: how much maintenance does Arch require?
>>
>>54680571

Stop listening to memes and myths. Install it yourself and see for yourself. Stop just taking other people's opinions for granted.
What do you want me to tell you? That it works normally? Why would you believe me and not the guy below me who will epically post a meme that it breaks all the time?
>>
>>54680571
>>54680586

>I like the idea of simple, clean OS without all the bloat *buntu throws at me though...

There's something called "netinstall" via the Ubuntu mini ISO. There's also something called "--no-install-recommends" for apt.
>>
>>54680571
When I open Mumble normally and try to connect to any server, it freezes for several seconds before giving me the option to force quit.
If I open Mumble through the terminal (only as root), it runs Mumble with all default settings and the audio wizard open, so I have to set everything up again, but it actually connects to servers without freezing.

Wat is this.
>>
>>54680571
>How often does it break
I've never had it break by itself in over two years of use. I did have to reinstall once, though. But that's to be expected, since your first one or two Arch installations are "drafts" for your perfect OS.

>how much tinkering is needed for daily stable use?
Daily maintenance is almost non-existent (I update packages at least once a day, but that's one command).
But you do have to spend from several days to a few weeks (depending on your experience and general computer literacy) to get things set up the way you want to. Especially if it's your first time facing the command line with no GUI, because that's what you get after installing raw Arch.

I would really recommend Arch but only with one requirement: you know what you're doing or willing to learn to do a bunch of useless linux shit that Ubuntus do for you with a cute GUI.
>>
>>54680627
Fucking weird. After randomly enabling disabling "Force TCP mode", "Use Quality of Service", and "Reconnect automatically" in a fit of insanity, closing and opening Mumble every now and then, it now works perfectly (even with exactly the same settings I had before)

Arch doesn't offer you more "freedom" than a different distribution would. You didn't even specify what type of freedom. Good thing that it's still true for both of the definitions.
>>
>>54680846
Yes it does, Arch is significantly more 'bare-bones' than other distros after installation. Several distros either come with non-free software or push them on you. Either way, your post is not true.
>>
>>54680846
My bad... by 'muh freedoms' I meant freedom to do whatever the fuck I want in terms of customisation and setup.
>>
>>54666835

Using elementary os (freya) and like it, only thing is would like wingpanel to autohide so I can full screen (without manually fulscreening every program).

Wingpanel itself it seems has no more updates, is there any software that can make it autohide?

>I was discouraged by my first failed attempt to rebind scroll wheel to volume control, so I now assume everything is too difficult for me in MPV
Have mine:
MOUSE_BTN3 add volume +5
MOUSE_BTN4 add volume -5

mpv is piss easy; you just need to read the manpage.

Depends on your skills.

Awesome can be gods gift for you if you know Lua, but if you know C, dwm will make you day. Some WM's don't require skills to configure them, check this list: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Comparison_of_tiling_window_managers

tl;dr i3 is nice for basic tiling; give bspwm a go when you need more functionality or use Awesome if you love scripting things in Lua, use dwm if you love minimalism and compiling.

>>54680393
Try
sh -c 'redshift -l 40:-74'
>>
>>54680906

> Arch is significantly more 'bare-bones' than other distros after installation
No, it's not. Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora and Gentoo are just some of the major distributions which offer minimal installs.

>Several distros either come with non-free software or push them on you
So does Arch. It has non-free software in its repositories and a non-free kernel.

>>54680907

See above, you can do the same in other distributions.

That's good and all, but I also love Arch for AUR. It's one of the great strengths of Arch that I won't give up for PPA or whatever.

You can always use Parabola though

Is there any free software that allows extracting RAR files? It's, according to vrms, literally my very last propritary package I've installed.
>>
I really think we just need a new "user friendly" distro. Or rather, a new user friendly desktop environment and a distro to go with it.
But not "user friendly" in this modern way that all software seems to be going these days.

It needs to be done to the same standard of older user friendly software, like the win95/98 days.

They gave you what you needed without any flashiness and didn't go out of their way to hide the way computers actually work under the hood by doing too much for you.

and I think all the extra software that gets bundled with it in the menus should be like a separate package, so users who like to do more customizing will use that DE too without all the extra shit they usually come with, but your standard "user friendly" distro would come with it all loaded up.

Isn't this kind of like what GNOME was? Before they fucking ruined it?
>>
>>54680571
>How often does it break and how much tinkering is needed for daily stable use?
that shit is more stable than any distribution I have used in my life. All the programs works perfectly. The unique issue I had so far is with the AUR. Gnu Icecat have a dependency issue.
I've been using it for more than a year now.
>>
>>54681398
So Manjaro?
>win95/98
>not hiding the under-the-hood stuff
The only way it's not hidden is by the GUI settings giving you error messages
>>
>>54681351

Parabola isn't Arch.
>>
>>54681447
It's Arch with nonfreedom surgically excised.
>>
>>54681344

You get to enjoy less software working with it, but you can feel superior for using something other people don't.
>>
>>54666835
switched to ubuntu 2 weeks ago. its really neat, it could work with it, but couple of things are shit. after 16 lts update everything kinda went to shit, pc kept freezing after boot, ive read somewhere that it could be problem with gpu driver or something, solution was to boot with downgraded kernel. next, making shortcuts is really retarded and i dont know how to sudo run gui programs (IDE for example) with bash script. Ive tried with pkexec but it doesnt work. And i hope that in future there will be more usefull applications. But all in all it is nice alternative to windozer

You know the faggot claims to be a doctor despite not even having finished his masters?
>>
>>54681353

According to [1]this, there isn't. The unrar package itself is not free. Other software like file-roller or xarchiver use it to deal with RAR files. Stop using RAR or if you don't value your privacy, use those online extraction tools.

What's a good video, or video series I can watch to learn the basics of how to work in Linux?

The best idea is to read the book mentioned in OP, tinker through the Arch Wiki and read the program's manpages.

man program
is basically all you need. To know what program to use, run
apropos download
to get a list of installed programs that do (in this example) jobs for downloading stuff, then you can go to the manpage and learn how the desired program works.

Hello /fglt/. I wanna learn to use Linux and so far my only knowledge is what I've managed to learn from reading posts here and there on /g/.

I plan to start by using
>https://www.edx.org/course/introduction-linux-linuxfoundationx-lfs101x-0#!
to learn the basics. Is this a good source? What else is there?
>>
>>54681923

Wow. Those Peruvian honorary doctorates sure seem legit. Hope my surgeon has plenty when I get my gall balder removed.
>>
>>54682073
You need to stop connecting freedoms with choices. These are two different things. Freedom means not being enslaved; in the tech world this means, not being controlled by the software. If you choose to install nonfree software, you're enslaving yourself (the program controls your computing) which is the direct opposite of freedom (you control the program).
>>
>>54682201
First you should learn Bash. See: >>54674905
>>
>>54682201
that looks like a really complicated way if you want to learn the basics. idk, maybe that course is good, but you can just read any article about bash or whatever topic you're interested in. I like
http://www.funtoo.org/Linux_Fundamentals,_Part_1

also if you want to learn vim, install it and then run vimtutor from the cli

Basic systemd management consists of 6 commands (systemctl start, stop, enable, disable, mask, unmask) so that is another thing you can learn quicky
>>
>>54682225
But in your definition of freedom, you are not "free" to use whatever software you like, even if you know that it's bad for you.
>>
Does emacs integrates well with Kubuntu?
===============================

I want to install Kubuntu as my first GNU/Linux distro because it looks familiar. I learnt to use emacs org-mode on college computers. I remember some vague advice about not installing Kubuntu or K-sounding things on those computers as they don't integrate very well.

My question is are there any issues with using emacs on Kubuntu?
>>
>>54682225

>freedom means you do whatever I say you can do

Stallmanite please. According to freedom one, I can run software for any purpose. True freedom indeed. So since I can use it for any purpose, does that include running a script to remove any traces of GPL licenses and re-licensing it all as BSD/MIT? I mean, that is true freedom.. to be able to use software for ANY purpose

Right now, I need someone to spoonfeed me some basic info. I wanna keep my win10 for now, since I have a lot of pending work on it. Would dual booting be safe and would booting into win10 just require a restart of my laptop? Are there any risks involved where I could end up losing my files on win10 or fucking something up?

After that, I need to know how to install Linux.

One more question; is a virtual box running Linux on win10 demanding of resources that would slow down or heat up my laptop. I'm using a T430 with a 3rd gen i5 and 8gigs of RAM.
