Is there a guide on eq'ing with using sine tones? I don't want to buy Sonarworks. But I will if I can't figure out how to eq.

You need logarithmic sine sweep tones to listen through and use a parametric equalizer to correct the response. Listen for the change in volume aka the sine sweep tone getting louder or quieter as the pitch goes up. When you hear a change in the volume, you apply EQ to counter it. You listen through the sine sweep tones again and see if your EQ fixed it. If not, you adjust the EQ filter. If it did, you move on and do it to the entire frequency response spectrum you hear. We can help out with other details here if you ask.

Closed cans will help there, but for gaming they aren't as good as open. Even isolation (which isn't the same as closed headphones) doesn't block out most noise, it's useful for environments with constant noise or hum like engines.

Hi /hpg/, looking for a closed can to complement my hd600 for fun

DT-770's or the fostex thx-00's? Pretty sure the 770's are going to be a lot more comfortable but I'm a bit scared of beyers remorse and the notorious treble they have, supposedly the fostexes sound a lot better and don't suffer from that problem...but they cost over twice as much. Are there any other superior closed competitors in the 150-400 USD price range?

$50 558s arrived.

They sound a bit more laid back than I remember 555s being. The bass overpowers things slightly but it's not huge like for the HE-400. The mids are just very slightly covered by the bass compared to ER-4, which really did have no bass by comparison.

Just my immediate impressions within the first 5 minutes.

555 might have slightly better FR balance, but it's close. They can definitely be listened to for much longer periods as a result of the sound signature.

Even for open headphones, they leak sound like mad. If I put them five feet away I can hear lyrics just as well as if I'm listening to them, and I'm not listening at particularly loud volume. Or maybe Etymotic just made me misremember. Actually, listening to a different song I can't hear them at all from a foot away. It really just depends on the track, I suppose.

I admit that everything sounds slightly underwater.
>>
>>54672098
>The bass overpowers things slightly but it's not huge like for the HE-400. The mids are just very slightly covered by the bass compared to ER-4, which really did have no bass by comparison.
This may be an effect of the high impedance output of your source. HD558 shouldn't sound this bassy, normally.
> Actually, listening to a different song I can't hear them at all from a foot away. It really just depends on the track, I suppose.
Lol what am I reading?? It's due to the different volume of the tracks, dude. When you listened to the first track, the volume was too high. Even if it's an open headphone, the lyrics shouldn't be easy to understand from the outside at a safe listening volume.
>I admit that everything sounds slightly underwater.
Open Sennheiser's classic sound signature. Now you can understand what people mean by Sennheiser's veil.
>>
>>54672170
It wasn't purely a volume thing. It had to do with the frequencies too. They were from different genres and one was a very high pitched anime-ish Asian pop song while the other was slow, bassy and subdued. I guarantee volume didn't have as much of an impact. I tried that first because that was my immediate thought too.

>impedance/source/bass
Quite possibly. I'm listening from a computer monitor plugged into a laptop for now. I felt the 555s had a decent bit of bass too, to be fair, just not (quite) as much.

>veil
I know, but I never heard it before. Now I can hear it only in comparison to the ER-4 which didn't obscure much due to nobass and a relatively balanced sound signature from there.

I'm talking an awful lot of trash about it but the truth is I bought it because I loved the 555 sound signature and this sounds very similar. I'm just being critical but I'm pretty satisfied with it and give it a general thumbs up, especially for this price. I don't think I would recommend it if it was around $120 or higher.

>>
>>54672334
If you don't need isolation, go for an open headphone. For your budget I can suggest either Philips SHP9500 or Sennheiser HD518 or AKG K240.
Closed headphones: Sony MDR7506 or AKG K92.
>>
>>54672572
I don't really need outside noise blocked, but I don't want sound leaking out, if that makes sense. Sorry if I'm using the wrong terms, but don't open headphones tend to leak more sound?

it's closer to v-shaped, on the bassy side. msr7 is cold, a bit on the bright side of neutral. maybe an m50x is portable enough for you? those might be the best. but the hd25 is notoriously sturdy so for portable use they should hold up well.

I would assume so since the only thing I can find is the 500a which is a pretty old headphone. the 600 is considered by most to be their best headphone outside of the hd800 and orpheus. the 598 to the 600 isn't that big of a jump but if the 500 is anything the the 518 or lower-tier sennheisers the jump should be considerable.

>source , computer but i have big woofer too
>preferably closed

>I like bass but deep instead of loud
>I like to listen:classical instrumental music,rap,electro and folk[guitar+singing]
>I had Superlux headphones for 25 euro they were very good,I gave them to brother because he needed them more than me in jail

>$200-300, flexible if quality justifies price
>Japan, but I'm American so I can obtain headphones there very easily
>Cellphone
>Over-ear, but on-ear might be more manageable for mobile use
> preference for closed, but again that might be harder with mobile headphones
>Id like them to be fairly comfortable
> Neutral/Natural, I guess? I'm not an audiophile but I don't want crazy bass or anything.
>a variety, classical, rock, rap, pop, game osts, spoken word
>ATH-A900x for home use, Monster Inspiration (noise cancelling) for on-the-go.

Here's the thing, though:

Are there any decent-sound-quality, not gigantic, on or over-ear Bluetooth headphones anyone here might recommend for mobile use?

I'm using my Inspirations now which are perfectly fine, but I'd enjoy going cordless in the future.

Pic slightly related. I'd love to take these everywhere but they are far too big.

Looking to get my brother headphones for his birthday
>$100-150, with $150 being a pretty hard max
>murrika
>Laptop
>looking for closed over ear
>He listens to house and dubstep, so i'm guessing something on the bassier side
>Some $20 Sony over ears i got him before

I thought he'd appreciate something better, and he didn't seem to like my MDR-V6 when I showed him so I want to go for something different. Currently I'm thinking either the Beyerdynamic DT 770 or the audio technica ATH-m40x, they seem to fit the bill but I wanted some more opinions.
>>
>>54676201
>DT770 of M40X
you are on the right track, most people i know didn't cared much for my v6 but liked my v-moda m80, i guess bright signature just ain't for everyone.
>>
>>54674666
I think it's more that it's a discontinued product

v6 is like 25 years old and still going

that's not veil, veil is the supression of the "airy highs" or open headphones that have more in the upper mids and highs. what you're hearing is just distortion. maybe there is a hair against the driver or something? my 598 have never done this.

>>54675238
>>54675128
actual answer: orpheus. as for headphones you could possibly afford, depends on what you like but:
he1000 (maybe edition x?)
ether
hd800s
one of the LCDs
a stax
>>
>>54676224
Yeah people seem to generally prefer bassier stuff but I like them.
I'm pretty sure he also didn't like the coiled cable which I thought was funny.
But great, I'll keep looking to choose between the two, thanks.

Is the piston basic edition shown below have the same innards as the piston 3?

ask head-fi. I know youth and dazzle are basically the same inside as piston 3.

So, I'd really like a set of cheap (<$30 pref, <$40 absolute) IEMs with the focus on comfort.

I'm also open to different tips for sets I already have, but the sets I already have all take the same tips (comply 400) but I just don't like that the "body" of the earpiece is supported by whatever is stuffed in the ear canal.
>>
>>54677882
hje-120k. most comfortable I have owned I and I own quite a few cheap IEMs.
>>
>>54677862
yeah okay buddy, plenty of high end stuff that's more linear and less treble happy than the hd800.
>>
>>54664488
What is wrong with those headphones? Are they sick or something? Do they have headphone cancer with headphone tumors?
>>
if i wanted a iem for daily use what should i get? i would prefer a durable build like metal. a buddy suggested i should buy a rha like him and i like the metal jack. <120 would be ideal
>>
>>54678451

Preferred tonal balance?

RHA is great, and I like my Soundmagic e80.

comply tips are good as foams because they don't really change the sound that much. the problem is they disintegrate over time. eventually little bits on the outside will peel away from the outside until it's a bit fucked up.

personally I just use silicone. medium to large size. it's a shallow fit IEM, plus the bore is overall shaped where every other IEM I know of is circular. it conforms to your outer ear cannel great, so it's easy to slip them in and out and get a good seal without having to cram them in your ears for a bit like a lot of IEMs.

when I use foam I use the thicker earplug-style ones. they boost bass but they also hold up much better and they're easier to get in your ears than comply.
