I'll start: Is there any good FlagFox alternative for Chrom(ium)?
The top part of the picture is the icon that FlagFox uses, while the bottom part is the icons of literally every single Chrome extension that tries to copy it.
Additionally, as far as I can tell there are no Chrome extensions that even try to implement more than one or two of the features that FlagFox has integrated (VirusTotal, Google Translate, etc.)
Is there an extension that I've missed, or am I forced to just abandon FlagFox if I want to switch to Chrome?

I downloaded a wallet.js file that seemed suspicious but I just wanted to make sure
I put it straight into a zip and deleted the loose file before putting it on virus total
These were the results
I have no idea how viruses work so would my PC have been comprimised by just downloading the loose file?

Only if you actually executed it. JavaScript, like everything else, can't just magically run and compromise your computer by being near it.

Question, how is it that some gpus are good at video editing and 3d rendering stuff but apparently arent good for video games. Like quadro and geforce or radeon and whatever amds equivalent is
>>
>>54647077
that's good to know, I didn't touch the thing
>>
>>54647081
They are also very good at video games, they're just specifically designed for a different task so they are comparatively bad at the task that they weren't designed for.
Or if you meant the actual reason that it's possible, it's because the architecture is different.
>>
>>54647131
Yeah im curious about the architecture thing. I would have though since quadro is good for rendering and 3d rendering that it should be better than consumer geforce cardi honestly have no idea how a video card works or how amd and nvidia cards are better for different thinga (like bitcoin mining).

what the fuck is a microwave powered car? Hmmm... I guess that you mount a rectenna on an electric car and beam microwaves at it. Like 30 KW over 1.5 km has been demonstrated with like 80% efficiency. Cars are already almost faraday cages, by putting mesh or transparent conductor in the windows the whole car would be microwave safe.

Keeping the beam on the car would be a pain in the ass though.

You can send a specific packet from another device in the network to power on the computer.

You might even be able to do it remotely if you have a router that is configured to allow that packet through its firewall but I'm not 100% sure on that. Could be useful if you need to turn your computer on at a certain time and you're not around.

If you take a lossy file, say an MP3, and transcode it to a FLAC, does that file now behave like a true lossless file, in that it will not suffer any further loss of quality when being transcoded to different lossless formats?
>>
>>54649145
No, a lossy file file transcoded into a lossless file doesn't increase its quality. It's also considered to be a bad idea because the lossy quality of the audio file still persists even after the transcode. Avoid transcoding lossy files to lossless, it's a bad idea.
>>
>>54649135
Kaspersky, AVG, Webroot. All of them are very good and come with cheap subscription renewal plans.
>>
>>54649197
You completely missed the point of the question.

I'm well aware of how lossy and lossless files behave and how generational loss works. What I am asking, is if a lossy file transcoded to a lossless format will now _behave_ like a lossless file, in that it will be subject to no FURTHER generational loss should it be transcoded between lossless formats again. I am aware that the initial lossy > lossless transcode has already subject the file to one transcode's worth of generational loss.
>>
>>54649238
No it won't suffer any more loss in quality, it'll just be bigger in size because flacs are larger than most lossy formats. So really, you achieved nothing in the end, all you did was make your files a bit bigger.

They probably won't do anything about it unless you get another letter or two, but I'd recommend looking into prices for verizon plans if they are near you.
Comcast tries not to actually cause any problems to the customer because they'd still rather have you as a paying customer than cancel your service, but comcast does regularly comply with the copyright laws and cancel service.
Verizon, on the other hand, doesn't give a shit.

Anyone know a way to stream audio from my Macbook to my PC? Using synergy so I can use both desktops simultaneously, now I just need a way to get the audio from my Macbook to play through the audio interface connected to my PC.

Never understood why /g/ have to be so snobby about antivirus. Yeah, obviously no matter what antivirus you have the most important thing is to be smart and not download anything you aren't reasonably sure is safe. Still, there's no harm in having the safety net there to catch you in the unlikely event you fuck up. Much better than having some shit silently stealing your info for months/years and just being completely ignorant of it.

It's like those guys who refuse to use a condom because their girl assures them she's on birth control. Yeah, it's probably safe anyway, but you never know. Do you really want to chance it?

>uses system resources
>can have its own security vulnerabilities, which lead your system to be vulnerable to exploits it otherwise would not have been with no AV installed
There's definitely a reason to not use an AV if you're not retarded.

Ultimately, though, you're a fucking retard if you're expecting security on Windows computers at all in the first place.
>>
>>54653600
I'm not sure how being "not retarded" will save you if you happen to get caught up in some 0-day exploit by pure bad luck though. And since you have no antivirus you have little chance of ever discovering you're even compromised, as long as the person that did it isn't an idiot themselves.
>>
>>54653600
>>54653630
Also is the resource overhead of most antivirus really a legitimate concern in this day and age?

>>
>>54652774
You can. But IIRC getting location (and list if you need it) of fonts is system specific. And there is no guarantee that font you want is present. So to carry your fonts with your programm is probably better approach.
>>
>>54653922
I have a kindle (not sure if it's the 6 or what generation) but you can definitely put your own pdf, mobis, and epub files.

The whole point is for it to imitate an actual sheet of paper, so I wouldn't recommend attaching something as bright as an LED strip to the top.

You can definitely bookmark multiple books at once, and it will also save your progress in all the books at once.
>>
>>54653922
Kindles 6 is a fine, basic ereader. No backlight though, which is nice to have if you read in bed. You can pick up pretty much anything at the bottom end and it will be mostly comparable. Some people hate on kindles because they don't support the most common ebook format (ePub) but you can convert between formats really easily using Calibre - essential software if you don't plan on paying for your books.
Bookmarks are a pain but technically possible.
LED attached lights are a pain in my experience, I just bought an ereader with a backlight.

Yes, if you are addicted. Consciously break your addiction, it's hard.

No, because you are not copying them in any way.
If that was the case then something like LibreOffice would not exist since it mimics MS Word almost exactly.

I have a Kindle, it's fine, although pdf rendering can be a bit hit or miss depending on the formatting of the pdf in question (tiny text being the worst offender). My only real regret is I now feel I should have stretched to a backlit one in hindsight, but you can certainly survive without it. Overall I've found it to be a good babby's first ereader.

Stop using sites that use flash anyway.
It's pretty much deprecated at this point.
>>
>>54654122
I use the default Chrome player, not the Adobe one
>>
>>54654062
Well that's was pretty much I was thinking.
Then the real question behind the first one - why noone bothered to clone PhotoShop?
Let's lay asaide other programs that do the same, but have different interface/controls/functionality.
PS is a powerfull program with nice interface. It's been around for years, many people like it and used to it. And yet it costs a kidney and a half. So how come there is no PS clone? Sure it's not a trivial task yet there was enough time and (probably) enough willing individuals?
>>
>>54653807
pls respond
>>
>>54654189
There is already GIMP, and while it does not really clone photoshop it has the same functionality.
I think people have just opted to learn how to use GIMP instead of remaking photoshop again.

Dont use a shitt media player. You're missing codes or w/e you windows users have to install to provide basic functionality

but it doesn't need a 3rd party runtime to be viewable on a website.

>>54654298
Unfortunately the people that develop these things don't give a shit about aesthetics, which is why almost all floss programs are less user friendly and uglier than their proprietary counterparts.
Then again, that's also because the userbase for these programs doesn't really care much about appearances either.

Nope.
If you want everything to be fairly recent without spending much time, Debian Sid is pretty good. Ubuntu LTS is good enough for most use cases.

It has almost identical functionality, it is just harder to use and learn so probably less efficient.

That would depend on your distro.
uname -a will show you the version you're currently using. Check that against your distros packages.

So how important is math for a software developer and a programmer?
>>
>>54654505
Relatively important in the sense that you have to be able to do it, but programming is much more reliant on logic and problem solving skills.
It really isn't as math heavy as most people believe it is.
>>
>>54654378
If you're on Ubuntu/Debian, then take a look at http://linux.exton.net/?tag=stable-kernel

Probably similar projects exist for other distros. Personally I run Fedora and just keep the whole distro updated, but if you want to run an older distro but still keep up-to-date kernels, then that's the way to do it.

Start your own business building computers for people too lazy to do it themselves? It's much better to just find something you have a genuine passion for and go with that rather than "well, I like computers, so I guess I'll be a programmer". That sort of thinking is a shortcut to regret. It sounds like hardware might be more your interest than programming anyway.
>>
>>54655196
Well yes, but if it's actually idling (not doing anything at all) then there is little to none difference. If it's doing some idle tasks like defragmentation or search indexing (fuck you, MS!) then its better to turn it off/put to sleep.
>>
>>54655281
Not him, but building computers is fun, helping people when they fuck up their system and then blame you on the hand...

I feel really retarded for asking this, but all of a sudden the controls on the playback screen of vanilla music for android are gone. You know, the duration bar, play order controls, pause, play, etc. I tried restarting my phone and looking through the settings, can't fix it.

Anyone using the app? There was an update recently, not sure if that caused it.

I honestly don't see a market strong enough to keep a decent small business like that afloat.

Specially after witnessing every physical computer store around me go bankrupt.

Seems normies just go to bestbuy and the rest of the people that build computers has no need for stuff like this.

Recommend me a seedbox? Don't need perfect anonymity etc, just need to not be low-hanging fruit for the copyright trolls. Ok this is really bugging me.

A small number of sites pretty much fail to load 90% of the time. Biggest ones are imgur and wikia. It's not a case of just getting a crappy server from them otherwise it wouldn't consistently happen only on this PC

My PC is the only one on the network where this happens., everything else connected views it fine.

Tried with open DNS, tries with my ISPs DNS. Hosts file is empty, every browser does it.

Here's my tracert:

Tracing route to imgur.com [185.31.19.193]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 2 ms 1 ms 1 ms DD-WRT [192.168.1.1]
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 * * * Request timed out.
4 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms 31.55.186.180
5 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms core3-hu0-14-0-1.faraday.ukcore.bt.net [195.99.127.42] (continues on from there normally)

Completely stumped. Any ideas?
