This thread was created to prevent anons from spamming new threads, for technology questions they have.
If you are that person, post your simple/small/stupid questions here.
Don't bump. This is a slow board, and will continue to be. Wait for an answer or google it.
If you see other anons posting questions outside this thread, ignore or redirect them here.
Use >>>/g/sqt as a link to find the sqt thread.

Pic releated is from this awesome song:

How do we know someone is using free software compiled from the available source code as is, and not a modified version if that source code (say botnet/spyware attached)?
>>
I'm using 4chan X 1.11.33.2, and I'm getting really fed up of having to manually check "Prefetch Images" on every thread. How can I make it checked by default?

If you're not auditing the code and compiling it yourself you don't know.

So I want to lower the resolution, but I dont know how to figure out what resolutions will work for it. Like I want to play it at a lower resolution that fits the 1600x900 aspect ration but I am literally too retarded to figure it out or even string together a proper google search (everything I tried gave me shit)

I just want to play Civ5

you can't. most of the time checking the integrity of the binary with their hashsums won't work, because it's very hard to recreate the exact same build environment that was used for a binary compiled on another machine. so if you'd compile it again and compared the hashsums they wouldn't match even if both binaries were clean. the only way you can be relatively sure you use clean binaries is to build them from source yourself. with a compiler from a trustworthy source if you want to overdo it.

Hey /g/, I got a free 27 inch apple cinema display from work yesterday. IT said power supply is dead. I went out and bought a voltmeter and suction cups and I'm wondering how I test. I'll keep googling around for guides.
>>
I damaged a SATA port by squishing it with my video card while it had a cable in (I later swapped the cable for a right angle corner type cable, so it wouldn't squish), and now it's all wobbly and can bend out of the motherboard. It'd probably come out if I tugged on it more.

My question to you, /g/, is do I need to buy a new board at all? The port's pretty secure, and everything boots up as normal.
>>
I'm getting a W520 soon and intend to put in a 256GB msata SSD and two 1TB drives. Is it possible to have these 1TB drives set-up in some kind of 'jbod' like way in both Windows and Linux without having the hardware level raid there?

Only thing I see in the settings is to enable that checkbox in the "triangle menu", there is no option to set its default value.

So to be clear:
I have the checkbox in settings that is labeled "Image Prefetching: Add link in header menu to turn on image preloading." checked, but I still have to check the checkbox it makes appear in the triangle menu every time I open a new thread.

mpv can play back BR's afaik.

You can always remux if no media player works though.
>>

Save your settings then go back to default and see if it works. Its "working here"
Are you using the script or the extension?
>>
>>54552546
Most of them are encrypted and you have to use special players. But on the chance it isnt.mpv will play it fine
>>
>>54552596
I'm not sure what you mean by "saving the settings" and "going back to default", it seems to auto-save any changes done in "settings" as soon as I make them, but nothing changed in the "header menu" persists beyond current tab.

You're telling me if you tick the "Prefetch Images" checkbox on one thread and then close it and open a new thread the checkbox is still checked?

I am using the script via greasemonkey.

I'm split between getting a new chair, getting a new PSU or getting a new case.
Basically, I have a fuckterrible "design" noname chair that fucks my back and my buttocks.
I also have a CX430M, and even if it works for my configuration (i7 3770/780Ti), its fan is going to die (goes full WRZHHHHHH) and I want to do some SLI at some point.
My case is a Silencio 352 from Cooler Master. It's pretty "OK" except from the ironic fact that for a "silent" case, it's loud as hell (HDDs have no rubber bumpers or shit like that; "isolation" does jack shit). Also to note, impossible to do cable management in this case, there ARE dust filters but they just don't fucking filter shit, except maybe blocking airflow, so I have to have fans at max RPM to get some air in this bullshit case and it's even louder than just with the drives....
I thought about replacing the chair with something like a MARKUS, replacing the PSU with either a Seasonic M12ii 620W or a Corsair RMx 750 and replace the case with a Phanteks EVOLV micro ATX,
So /g/, what's your opinion?
>>
>>54552719
SLI is retarded and not really functional for the reason you would get it.
Chair seems a better investment.Dont get some shitty chair, invest in your comfy down the line, not short term

sometimes when i watch videos or do "intensive" things on my phone (1st generation moto x) it makes a mechanical static "clicking"/static sound from the rear. it's not coming from the speaker and i'm really confused

i can do it consistently by opening a chrome tab and forcing it to crash by opening 500 pages at once. when it goes to the "chrome is not responding" thing it makes the sound
>>
>>54552680
By the way, you can also try resolutions with different aspect ratio from your screen and have it not look terrible by going to your graphics card driver and setting the scaling to something like:

-"preserve aspect ratio" which will stretch the image to cover as much of your screen as it can without losing the ratio

-"no scaling" if you wish to keep the image crisp but it will leave you with black borders around it

You may also have to force the GPU to perform the scaling and not the screen (never did this on laptops but on desktops it's an issue and you often need to force scaling on GPU because the monitor will fuck it up.)

Good luck.
>>
>>54552776
Thank you for your input.
But why and how would it be retarded/not functional? 780Ti prices are going to drop due to 1080 being released and stuff, I know it's not like CF but there's still a gain...

Its just not worth it anymore.
Back in the 400-500 series sure, things were optimized for it.But now,no one bothers, just like dedicated physx cards, tht shit was going to be amazing shit, and it flustered out pathetically when it was integrated in to normal gpu and software

Its just a fad from the past.

I'm getting worried? Should I replace my 780Ti? I wanted to keep this card as long as possible, but with textures becoming heavier and devs optimizing less their piles of shit, I don't really know what to do. Or I could just stop purchasing new games and stay with my actual library.
>>
>>54552880
The reason physx never took off was because developers only use it to add shitty eye-candy as that would not pose a parity problem with systems that wouldn't support hardware physx.
However we all wanted physx for actual game-impacting stuff, and no big developer would consciously cut out all consoles and a sizable portion of PC market by tying physx to core mechanics.

As for sli it was never an out-of-the-box thing, always requiring driver hacks to make it work for every game. But I have hopes for vr applications where it might be possible to have a single driver setup work on every game, just by making one card render for one eye.
>>
>>54552961
780ti is a solid card to have.
But not a medium level card for 2016 heavy hitters.
I mean can you guarentee you're going to spend and complete the games?
Fallout was so hyped and shit.I have over 800 hours played from 3 and vegas.i was hoping the same with 4, i have less then 30 hours in game and beat it from each faction.I even bought a new rig to play the next gen games. Its sitting powered off for months.

Well you can save $30 (and more in the long run) by going for a 650W Antec Platinum PSU for $99. Your GPU uses some 150-350W. Overclocked cpu ~150. HDD/SSDs don't consume much of anything. New GPUs would consume less power too.

That's not how it works. You can have the exact same bandwidth and more system load by using 4 instead of 2. Does your motherboard support quad channel memory? Doubt it since it's a 1151 socket and skylake (not broadwell/E) does not support quad channel.

Hopefully someone familiar with animation/film software explain this software question to me. I'm not in the business or anything, I've just been very curious about this topic:

Why does it take so long to render a video?

I've read that rendering a single frame in Family Guy (say, 1080p 24FPS?) can take up to four minutes. It must take a whole weekend to render an entire episode. And Fox should provide those people with top-of-the-line workstations, so I can't imagine how long the average joe's computer would take for a single Family Guy frame.

What is being processed as the frame is being rendered? What kind of work is the CPU outputting? Is there vector art? Like are the outlines so infinitesimally small, the CPU is choking to draw a small segment of the frame at a time? Is a bitmap being generated for a video frame?

I can only assume so much at face value, but I know nothing about how the software side of film works in this fashion.

I'm trying to figure out how to access my cctv system by typing in a static IP. Currently I have the NVR stuck with a static IP that is taken directly from the modem. However, I currently only have the 16 cameras directly plugged into the NVR being detected...

I would like to change it so it goes modem -> router -> NVR, the problem is I'm completely fucking clueless when it comes to anything beyond basic networking.

Here's a diagram explaining what I currently have.

without knowing anything about your cameras, this is tough.

How do you assign a static IP address to a camera appliance? Do they have some sort of UI? Or by "Static" do you mean "DHCP reserved"? In which case it is done at your router by each appliance's MAC address.

So I updated my laptop to windows 10, and now it won't make any sounds or pick up my microphone. Everything LOOKS like it's playing (the green bars show up on the mixer and shit), but no sound. I've tried updating drivers, and tried changing sound outputs (of which there is one).

It's a little bit wrong, kind of like software piracy or farting in public. I won't necessarily blame someone for doing it, and there are plenty of situations where it simply makes more sense than the alternative, but I can't really take someone seriously when they try to imply there is absolutely nothing wrong with it either.
>>
>>54556337

Something always bothered me about pro-life that are fine with abortions in case of rape. If the fetus is considered a person, why is okay to kill it when it was born of rape? Is it somehow less of a person because of it's circumstances?

I'm actually neutral on this issue, I don't really care either way but I found it kind of strange.
>>
>>54556388
I guess because in the case of rape you can't argue that the mother could have done anything different to prevent the pregnancy, it was due to factors completely outside her control rather than her own negligence.
>>
>>54556337

abortion is one of those things that you should be able to get, but not something to be proud of or think of as "MY BODY MY RIGHT".
>>
>>54556432
Well I didn't really address what you asked, basically the fetus is still a person, but the mother has no obligation towards that person since she had no part in its creation, so it's harder to say she should be forced to carry it to term even if you would still be depriving a person of life by removing it.

What exactly are the benefits of a low response time? I keep hearing how the lower it is the more fluid it is, but isnt that governed by refresh rate? I always thought a lower response time just reduced ghosting or overshoot or whatever it's called but some monitors have an "overdrive" function which lowers the response time at the cost of more ghosting. Huh? That's a contradiction. What's the deal?

no, response time is like this.

I move my mouse 500 units
the monitor gets that Xms (the response time) later.
essentially a monitor is out of synch with the source, a lower response time means its closer to being in synch (ie why tvs are shit for gaming)

Note that these hard drives were all in constant use and in a datacenter which is probably not indicative of your personal use.

if your family uses it, then those programs are fine (assuming they want them on there as well). The fact you can't open the file location means it's probably on another user's account (same with uninstalling programs). Just try removing utorrent and block skype ads and see if it happens again.

I only needed the GPU I got my old PC scraped together they will get some POWER with the Phenom II 955 and 8 GB ram but I didn't have spare GPU around. Guess I just grab a 5450 that goes forl ike 20 bucks. I just wasn't sure because most of these low end GPUs look like they could heat up badly
>>
>>54558703
You know parallel and serial?
RAID is like parallel sort of.
You have for example 2 HDDs and they both have the same files on their storage but they work together so you can open files faster.
So it's like 1 HDD does the first half of the file while the other one simultanously loads the other half

And because you store files on numerous HDDs it's a bit more reliable because if 1 file gets corrupted you still have other HDDs that store the same file

There are passivively cooled 5450s so it should be fine.
It can also run GTA5 so I'm rather certain it will handle browsing.

Most low end GPUs are low wattage so I doubt they'd heat up badly.
>>

WRONG!

Types of raid can be like that.

>>54558703
raid is a random array of inexpensive disks. it refers to several styles of managing multiple hard drives, but treating them as one. You can have raid that combines all of them into one and is faster at read write but more likely to fail, another which is fast but uses half the disc space as back up, and so forth

SSD aren't necessary in most cases, so buy it only if you really need it. And about the brand I never heard anyone saying they did good SSD, so better check the reliability
about the GPU, with the many you saved it's probably better to go with a R9 390X.

What would be the difference between a 1mbps fiber connection and 1mbps cable connection? Is it worth getting fiber over cable paying slightly more?
>>
>>54559111
I'd argue that putting money into a GPU is wasteful desu. A 1070 or polaris 10 will be like $350. He should use the igpu (p powerful for what it is with the HD530) and wait for the 1070 or polaris 10 for ~$70 more. He could easily get that by going with a cryorig h7/212x for $30.

I also doubt a 550W would be enough for the 390's ~350 peak demand leaving him with 200W for everything else. An overclocked i5 can consume a lot of power. Couple that with the cooler/drives... yeah I guess it's fine. He shouldn't go with nvidia though because they have some fucked up power draw peaks.

Anyway if you don't want to wait for polaris 10/1070 then the build is just fine. You're wasting money with the water cooler but it's your money. You can reroute the money for an 850evo. Also the new caviar blues (check the revision) are rebranded greens. Go with a red. I suggest getting a couple of 14cm fans since the gpu can run pretty hot.
>>
>>54559329
if it's 1mbit/s then it's definitely not fiber, probably just a marketing thing
>>
>>54559329
A fiber connection might have slightly lower latency and wouldn't suffer as much speed loss during peak hours
Having a 1mbps fiber connection is pretty retarded though
>>
>>54559393
It is indeed fiber. It's just that they've capped the speed.

I want to stick Ganoo Linux on an old PC that saw a lot of action being pure Windows XP only. The HDD has about 12GB free space. Assuming I want a 10GB Linux partition and a 1GB swap, what is the safest way to resize the Windows partition to prevent data loss from happening? Somehow I'm skeptical that just defragging will be enough.

Guys, I need help assessing a laptops worth.

Backstory: i bought this Acer V3 571 9423 with the following specs i7-3632QM, 6GB, 500GB, HDMI, Wireless, LED 15.6” e Windows 8.
I bought it for a reasonable price in my country, focusing on the i7 and 6gb specs, which, as a ignorant, were the only things i recognized as "good".
And i cant complain abou this machine. Served me flawlessly for 3 years.
Thing is, as i look for a new one, when i search for "i7" i get machines for sometimes double the price of the one i bought three years ago.
Im certainly assessing value the wrong way.
What is the right way? Was my pc shit?
>>
>>54559512
Why do you need a new one? Those specs hold up plenty well today.
>>
>>54559512
Your laptop is fine. Stick an ssd in there and you're good to go assuming you don't game much. Does your laptop have a gpu? Do these more expensive laptops have ssds? IPS? Gsync? 4k? Thing as paper? Light as a feather? 15" vs 17"? etc.

You can find a huge difference between hardware given the same price. It's best to keep looking if you don't like the price as most likely there's a better priced alternative, always, so keep searching until you find one that is sufficiently convincing.
>>
>>54559416
I'm using mine for a "3rd screen" - connected to WiFi and allows me to control music played in Spotify (official Spotify app on Android allows you to do that without premium now) and Clementine (Clementine Remote app is really fucking good). Disabled screenlock + 30 min screen ofc, and now it's easy to control music without having to alt-tab fullscreen games

Plus when I do stuff around the house I sometimes use it to stream PC audio to it, but I guess I could also use my new phone for this (btw - using Soundwire for this - are there any better alternatives?)
>>
So, I finally decided to build a PC for myself (had a laptop for like last 5 years) and I have a few stupid questions:

GPU I want to buy says it uses PCIe x16 3.0 but the mobo I chose doesn't say what version of PCIe it has. Will this work or do I need to look for a specific mobo with 3.0 PCIe? (I assume this whole version thing depends only on the card)

RAM:
2400MHz CL15 or 2133MHz CL13?
>>
>>54558721
730
>>
>>54559590
something like this is my main idea, but I can't think of a reason why I would not use my new phone instead
>>
>>54559614
RAM speed doesn't make a difference when you have a dedicated GPU.

I'd say the cheaper one. 2400 obviously is supposed to be a tiny bit faster, but the difference would be negligible and 2133 obviously wouldn't bottleneck shit. Timings might make a larger difference, but that still wouldn't really matter methinks

>Tbh i dont even know why i7 is good?m, i just know it is

if you don't know why, then you probably don't need it desu. it definitely applies to desktop versions and maybe less so to mobiles, but if you're not doing any encoding/decoding stuff it probably isn't worth paying extra over an i5
>>
>>54559725
It does. By what ive looked into google, im pretty sure its something silly as you said, but im not confident enough to do it myself. I appreciate you trying to help me though. I love this machine, hope to still have it
>>
>>54559614
2400mhz = 2.4x10^9hz so T= 0.416ns -> response time is 6.2ns. 2133 at cl13 is 6.1. Well I given they have about the same delay the 2400 is better since it carries a higher frequency per clock.

99% of modern mobos have at least one pci3 x16. If you can't verify the info but everything is too expensive then just get it. pci is backwards compatible and doesn't affect performance in any significant way.

>>54559691
It's what I did. Waiting to see what polaris 10 is about. Also 960s are already dirt cheap ~$170. Still going to wait though for decent hardware.
>>
>>54559758
Being honest with you, when i went to buy it i wanted one that could play reasonably modern games and the price for that one was incrediblh cheap.
If processor dont make much of a difference for that i wont be surprised, as im ignorant
>>
>>54559680
It depends on the ram frequency, ram type, gpu, screen quality/resolution, weight, battery, optical drives (e.g. bluray), ssd/hybrids/type of storage/etc.

Differences should be obvious reading the technical details.

right, actually, raid stands for /redundant/ array of inexpensive disks, this infers any particular data can be retrieved from at least two of the disks
"raid" levels that are not redundant are jbod configurations, for example, "raid0". it's improper to call it a raid level, as it's not redundant
