At the rate technology is moving, would the chance of someone like an Iron Man ever be a realistic possibility?
>>

Some aspects of it, yeah sure. Others, no.
>>
the biggest problem is still the portable power source
Maybe if we make tesla wireless electricity then it is possible
>>
>>54541321
No

Power tech is stuck in the 1940's
>>
Could you make a flywheel resist the rotational effects of the earth?
>>
No, the primary issue being power.
You see the experimental military exoskeletons and they look pretty cool, only they're incredibly bulky and have to be hooked up to a huge power supply.
There's no way you could get something like the iron man to fly using rocket engines without it being extremely costly and inefficient.
Another issue being why you would need one in the first place. There's nothing a realistic iron man could do that a drone can't do much better and safer.
>>
No, without the efficient enough power source.

There are several prototypes for power armor so far and the biggest problem (except finding materials both light and durable enough) is providing portable power source.

Unless you want to run on cable all the time...
>>

Well shit is shrinking and I do believe that you could have a suit with similar functions in two or three decades.

When it comes to mobile power sources, we are still in the fucking stone age and that will be the limiting factor with such suits.

You might get something like it but it would probably be used more in construction and rescue more than in combat and it would have to run off an umbillical power source.

The iron man concept is stupid at its core.
A hypotethical suit like that would be infinitely more capable without the human component as it limits the suit to g forces humans can handle and a pilot would consitute a huge percentage of the vehicle weight.
Also the human shape is absolute dogshit in terms of aerodynamics.
Fusion power is nowhere near that level and hasn't significantly progressed in the past half century.
And as for armour, the only vehicles that can take hits from 20mm and larger shells use sloped armor consisting of several thick layers.
They also weigh a lot.
Let's say an iron man suit weighs 300kg with the pilot. Taking a hit from a 50mm or 76mm shell still kills or incapacitates the pilot even if it can't penetrate the armor just because of the momentum it imparts.

it worked in NGE

Least until crazy energy dense batteries.
If you've seen star trek you'll know about the phaser. The hand phasers especially have batteries that have insane amount of energies in them. If you have any kind of imagination, then it's the phaser battery tech you'd steal from the future, since the possibilities are nearly endless.
Assuming you also steal the means to produce a battery like that.

>A hypotethical suit like that would be infinitely more capable without the human component
And who is supposed to control that suit then? AI?
>>
>>54541512
Remote control by a human, just like in Iron man 3.
>>
>>54541526
At which point there's no reason to keep the 'suit' human shaped.
>>
>>54541487

Until facing JDF, who used their brains and aimed at the cable in "End of Evangelion".

And they still carried batteries capable of powering that giantic robot for 5 minutes. Imagine the power output required to run that.
>>
>>54541555
Might as well make it tank shaped. Then you can throw some seating in there and have multiple people control it, and call it a tank
>>
>>54541465
Iron mans suit has the same brain case tech as a woodpecker bird rendering him immune to g-loc
>>
Nanosuit from Crysis would be better. :)
>>
>>54541321
From a security perspective, imagine someone hacking into it. Snapping arms, legs
>>
>>54541589
>brain case tech
Are you saying Tony Stark has had his skull replaced?
And g forces aren't just an issue for the brain, but also for the circulatory system.
>>
>>54541673
Yeah no I'm saying there is a thing between him and the suite which stops g loc
>>
The whole conceit of the Iron Man movies is not the tech of the suit itself - thats do-able, almost, even with current technology. Look at the IronMonger suit for example. Stark was mostly cagey about the Arc Reactor - that was the miracle technology that made it possible and that is why we cannot have such suits.

Until Elon Musk gets kidnapped by terrorists, we wont have that kind of tech.

>>54541418
>drones
did u watch avengers 2?
>>
>>54541526
Remote controlled can be jammed. It needs to have predefined instructions.
>>
>>54541624
That's easy to prevent. You can just mechanically limit it's movement.
>>
>>54541391
>Power tech is stuck in the 1940's
Yeah, cause lithium batteries and supercapacitors really existed back then.
