For the third consecutive year in a row my WD hard drive is failing.

For the third consecutive year in a row my WD hard drive is failing. This happens every spring, the drive starts shitting the bed and not being detected during boot.

So fuck WD. What manufacturer do you use for HDDs /g/? I'm considering getting a Seagate.

Seconding this. I use two of them as storage drives and they're great.

WD. I have a 640GB Blue and a 500GB Blue. Both are over 3 years old. Both are working great. Though the 500GB is slow.

For the love of god, don't get Seagate. Seagate has been fucking terrible since 2005.

Get a WD Red NAS drive. The blues are made to die. Go for the WD Red NAS Pro if you really don't want the fucker to die. Those ones are made to take the vibration from server racks, so they're quite durable.

HGST drives are solid. Would recommend. I've had great luck with Seagate despite the constant shilling. (all of my drives are Seagate)

Redundant arrays and dedicated backups are always a good idea.
>>
>>54527658

I have 3 hard drives , all western digital.
A 500gb sata2 blue with more than 1000 days power on time (late 2012)
A 160gb sata2 raptor with 550 days on record (bought used last year with 100 days power on time)
And a 1tb sata3 blue with 320 days power on time (bought late 2014)

I only had 1 drive die on me and it was a seagate drive that my pre-built fujitsu came with. Bought the pc in late 2008 , drive died late 2012 (got the 500gb blue as a replacement)

also
>fuck wd
>my drives die
>must be the drives
>no way it's my fault
>or a fucked up power supply
>>
>>54528067
How do you backup?
>>
I got these 2-4gb 20+ year old hard disk drives, they make the weirdest sounds while running but.... they're working :))
>>
>>54527658
You could get unlucky with any manufacturer.

If it happens every spring, do you have a humidity/condensation problem? Hard disks actually don't care about temperature as much as people think, but they really do not like high humidity.

What about your power supply? It's not some Diablotek or no-name shit is it?

If you must go with a hard disk, HGST have the highest reliability. However, SSDs have no moving parts, and since you seem to have bad luck with moving parts, a good solid Samsung or Sandisk SSD might be a better choice.

Using 2 Seagate hdds for 5 years now, still working fine.
When I bought them I couldn't afford anything else so I'm more than happy with how it turned out in the end.

Backblaze agrees with you though. Failure rates among WD drives were higher in 2015 than Seagate's drives.

WD.

No, really. I've had four WD drives running together in RAID for seven years without a single failure. They've by far exceeded their expected lifespan.

just bad sectors out of nowhere, no audible clicking or anything

>This happens every spring

Sounds like your system is fucked up. The #1 killer of drives (besides defects) is heat. What are your drive temps at?

I run a Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD as my boot drive (and oft-used software) and HGST for my secondary and media drives.

I have an external WD My Book that's been going strong for years, though, as a media drive. Currently it's a porn drive (2.7 TB). It doesn't see very heavy use, though, which is probably why it's still working great.
>>
I recently tried a 2tb Toshiba drive, still going fine, heard they are made in the same factory as hgst drives.

My old 6 year ish hgst 500gig deskstar still runs great though.
>>
Sounds like it's your psu or motherboard.

Then again for me it's been 1.5gb and 3tb drives with have all failed. Got a replacement WD 3tbRED and one of them is making odd noises now. Haven't seen a 4tb die yet so i'm going with those and newer 2tb.

PROTIP: Do not sperg rage slam your computer or remove all the fans so it gets too hot inside.

Or if you must subject it to physical shock, get an SSD so it's less likely to take damage from such things.
>>
>>54527769
In RAID 10 for maximum performance?

S-seagate.

I sure hope my 8TB archive doesn't die... still pretty new.
