>books on game programming
Fucking disgusting. Grab a book on OpenGL and get "Effective C++" that covers C++11, that's all you need. If you don't know C++ then pick up the Straustrup book.

>learning programming by trying to do something you actually want to do is disgusting
>you need to run hello world programs 500 times first
I disagree. Something fun should be done first, to satisfy the initial curiosity and provide continuing motivation.

Nah, the books are shit for the most part. They encourage over-engineering through class inheritance and don't give respect to the pure C++ way of doing things. I know you won't listen but after a few months when you're maintaining that mess of an inheritance tree and lack of standard library use you might wanna come back.

F#, Ocaml is better
you can write games in F# too

Even if you find game programming interesting (and most people don't after they try it) it's still a bad place to learn.
Writing rendering and physics engines is very complicated and specialized, not at all suitable for someone who doesn't know how to program.
Using existing engines and frameworks you'll spend a huge amount of time generating assets, which will teach you nothing about programming.
