Asking "Hey guys, what's your opinion on x?" is frowned upon.
Wireless is frowned upon.
Headset requests are frowned upon.
Isolation ≠ Noise cancellation
If you dislike a headphone suggestion, try giving a better suggestion to whomever asked instead of going "hurr, brand x sucks"

HD600 or HE400s?
>>
>>54495528
My xonar essence stx should be good enough for a pair of hd600s or 650s, right? Or is there an external amp (and dac?) that would be significantly better for under $300
>>
>>54495641
It's more than good enough.

Any opinions on the Plantronics BackBeat Pro wireless headphones?

Reposting from the last thread.
I have the opportunity to get some mth m50-xs for 90 bucks brand new, should I go for it? It'll be my first "real" headphones, not planning on getting an amp or a DAC or anything, unless you guys think I'd need one. Thanks.
>>
>>54495641

I have one for my q701 and asked about it on /hpg/. As I recalled the replies were
>lel soundcards
>sell it
>enjoy your graphic card static

I decided to try audition my headphones on a schiit stack and they sound exactly the same, and the stx had more features.

maybe I have shitty hearing after flying a turboprop for 6 plus years. who knows.
>>
>>54495695
If you like a bassy sound, sure, the price is ok for what it delivers.
>>
>>54495710
>>54495641
It's good enough but an external amp like the fiio e10k offers potentially louder volume and more importantly an analog volume knob. Having a dedicated knob for the headphones is pretty sweet at least for me.
>>
>>54495732
Yeah I'd say I like bass but not if it's muddy, are these nasty bassy or more clear.
>>
>>54495710
good to know. from what i can gather most people think the schiit stack, o2/odac and xonar sound very similar. haven't been able to hear any static under normal conditions
>>54495844
would be nice but not worth the cost, i can just set the amp to 300-600ohms when i get the new headphones

If anyone remembers i'm the guy who decided on keeping his 702's as an end game headphone and they broke 20 minutes after deciding that. One of you suggested opening them up and looking at the cables, well it turns out one of the two cables (red one) has completely come away, almost as if the solder has snapped. I'd imagine soldering that will instantly fix them.

Just a head's up in case one side of your akg's stops working for no reason. I say no reason but I do lay them down on my desk when I take them off because my headphone stand is on a different cupboard in my room. i'm very careful when placing them down...but still, fucking hell.

an e10k isn't louder than a xonar essence stx. e10k is 2.6 volts max and xonar is 7 volts max.

and the xonar is pretty good for noise performance too. I think mostly because it has no potentiometer. The magni 2 uber is -104 db/v, the o2 is -112db/v, and the stx is -110db/v.

It's actually a pretty good dac and amp for high impedance headphones.

I don't really know where to post this, I tried on /sqt/, but with no results. If anyone, I think you guys might be able to help me. It's a little off topic, so feel free to ignore it:

>I have a very unusual microphone problem. I don't have a slightest idea what might be causing it.
>
>I have an Asus 1015pn, and my internal and external microphone doesn't seem to work. I tested the external microphone on my brothers laptop and it works fine. When I try to record something on my laptop there is only static (both on internal and external).
>The really confusing part is the fact, that the same thing happens under Win7, Ubuntu 14.04 and whichever OS I boot from a flash drive. I also have two different external USB sound cards (they have the same chip though), which work on my brothers laptop, but if I try to record something through them on my netbook (tried on Ubuntu and Win7), the same thing happens as with my original sound card.
>To add salt to the injury, very rarely and totally at random (at least I can't determine what it's related to) when I boot up my Ubuntu and plug in the microphone, it somehow works. Usually there is noise in the background.
>The problem started about 2 years ago.
>
>Any ideas?
>>
>>54497357
I agree about HD600 being closer to neutral, but imo DT880 is comfier.
>>
>>54495553
HE400S has slightly slightly better impact, bass, mids and detail but it has a strange treble that's worse than the HD600's. HD600 also has a bigger soundstage and it's more relaxing if you want that kind of laid back signature
>>
>>54497661
I've had the DT990, which seems to be identical in size and everything, and the cups are too small in diameter for my ears. I had constant pain in the top of my ears with that after one hour of use.
>>
I'm thinking about buying a pair of DT 770 with amp. Woul'd you guys recommend them?
>>
>>54497738
They're pretty great V shaped closed headphones. Very easy to drive, any amp will do as far as I know
>>
>>54497684
>seems to be identical in size
It is, i've compared a friends DT990 to my DT880,in a blind test it would be rather hard to tell them apart just from the comfort, still, i felt that the circular shape of the Beyer was more comfortable on my jaw than the oval on the HD600, maybe it's a head size vs. ear size difference that give us different opinions on it.
>>54497738
Yeah, great closed-back option, as long as you are ok with v-shape FR.

>>
>>54497368
stereophile and personalaudio.ru measured it and got 7 volts.

I messed up the math on the noise. It's going to be -107db/v if asus says -124db at full voltage (7 volts).
>>
>>54496987
>>54497017
nvm. I just read through this and I'm convinced that PCM>DSD.
http://www.ayre.com/insights_dsdvspcm.htm

>Any time that the signal is manipulated, more and more noise is added to the signal. These high-frequency noises can lead to damage of downstream equipment including amplifiers and loudspeakers. Therefore the official Sony specification (the “Scarlet Book”) specifies a third-order low-pass filter starting at 50 kHz

>Since DSD is a one-bit format it is literally impossible to perform any signal manipulation at all — even a fade-out. So to perform recording in the modern methods where signals are mixed, EQ’d faded, reverb added, et cetera, all of the DSD signals must first be transcoded into PCM (or analog) signals, then the signal processing applied, and finally re-modulating the signal back into DSD, adding another layer of high-frequency noise.

I think I'll just stick with using PCM and .flac files. Is DSD a placebo meme?

It has crappy bass for planars. It's not any worse than the bass of other $300 cans. And it can be improved by switching pads.
And they're also very sensitive, meaning you can ditch your shitty tube amp.

Sony MDR-7506?
>>
>>54499831

dt770 80 ohm

extremely comfy for long-term listening, not horribly hard to power well, under your budget even with a modmic and will be much, much more comfortable and better sounding than your logitech headset

fostex t50 rp mk3 is also a good and better sounding contestant if you don't like an extremely v-shaped sound signature but is nowhere close to as comfy and different pads that fix the issue seem to really ruin and mess with the sound from my experience with zmf pads on them
>>
Should I get an amp for my MDR-V6s? Would it really make a difference in sound?
>>
>>54500583

Not really. If you get static/hissing/pops you'd be better off going for a DAC instead. amps will not magically turn your V-6's into anything amazing, the only reason to get one instead of using your onboard audio is if it can't power them to high enough volume. It does affect sound but to such diminishing returns that you're better off just buying different headphones than spending 80 bucks on a mediocre amp for a ~70 dollar headphone

Just got HD650s in the post. Despite being pretty darn similar to the 600s I owned before, I like these a LOT more.

I see what people are talking about when they say veiled but I think that's really an exaggeration and they are not as soft on the ears as the 600s. I can see why these would be end-game for plenty of people.

Just my 2 cents.
>>
>>54503277
What are you driving them with?
>>
>>54503295
Only an Objective2; it did a very admirable job with the 600s and it sounds great with the 650s as well.

Main differences I can detect between the two is some lower mid frequency body is slightly shifted back towards the mid-bass which puts a bit more weight behind the sound. Treble extension is also improved, but I would have to A/B them to confirm that.

>not as soft on the ears as the 600s
How can it be both? Anyway I was going to get hd600s, now you are making me second guess myself. Would you say the difference in sound is more due to technical improvements or just a different sound signature
>>
>>54503530
Not the same anon, but i share his opinion. Because the 600 doesn't extend as low (or high) and doesn't have as much umph in the mid bass. Neither are harsh or sibilant at all which is why some gradofags would call them veiled.
>>
>>54503527
Filco Majestouch 2 TKL Ninja w/ Brown switches

>>54503530
The veil is mostly noticeable when listening to aggressive rock; but I feel like I really have to listen for it whereas my temptation is to just enjoy the music. Some people say it's like a curtain is in front of the performance, I don't think that's true at all. This characteristic also lends itself extremely well to classical and vocal jazz, but so far they sound great with everything I have thrown at them.

The 600s I found soft because of their treble tuning, not due to any overall veil. Like I said, treble including microdetails seem more present on the 650s but not at all analytical.

I don't know about technical improvements, they are still similar phones but I do now see why the 650 has historically cost a bit more.
>>
>>54503530
Oh, and you can get them for 233 GBP shipped from Amazon UK as of right this moment, I don't know if that beats US pricing but it blows Canadian pricing out of the water.
>>
>>54503588
why would you buy a severely overpriced cherry switch keyboard?
>>
>>54503644
I wanted a no-frills TKL keyboard, and the lettering being printed on the side of the keycaps was also very appealing as I find the keycap lettering is usually the first thing to go with normal wear and tear.

I didn't find it overpriced relative to alternatives, but I live in Canada. Those in the US have access to a lot of great mech. keyboard sites without needing to pay 13% import duties and crazy shipping costs. Keyboards are heavy stuff man.
>>
>>54503694
filco shit nears topre level pricing without the benefit of good switches like topres. you can get kbs with cherry switches (and replace the keycaps later) for like $60usd
>>
>>54503619
Yep, when I checked it was $303 shipped where I am. Trying to hurry and make a decision since I don't want to deal with international returns if I don't like them
>>54503570
If you don't think they would sound veiled coming from hd595s I would probably jump on the deal
>>54503588
Now I think I should go for the 600s again, if you think they're more "neutral"
>>
>>54503710
Again, I'm sure that's true and I'm not doubting you, but that $60USD can easily become over $100USD when importing to Canada.

>>54503732
I never said they were more neutral, and my opinion on that matter is irrelevant as everyone perceives neutrality differently. 650 mainly just has slightly better extension on both ends and a more weighty midbass section if I had to sum it up.
>>
>>54503732
http://www.head-fi.org/t/740942/comparison-review-part-deux-a-tale-of-two-sennheisers-hd600-vs-hd650

Also a great read, he basically concludes that they are extremely similar and the 650s are just slightly darker. I can't A/B anymore to confirm that but I do prefer brighter phones usually and I prefer the 650s now.

I am also extremely sensitive to phones with recessed upper mids since the majority of my library is female vocals, and like him I'm pretty taken aback by how well the upper registers are still presented on this headphone.

At this point I don't think you can go wrong with either. There's no way to know for sure without trying both.
>>
>>54503902
Thanks for the link. I would have just bought both and returned one pair but they will probably never be on sale at the same time. Next best thing would be to compare them to my 595s- I think the 600s might be more similar to my 595s based on what you said about the mids, since those are also supposed to be higher on the 595s

Not here. I was looking online for good headphones for around €150 because I've had enough of using my gaming headset to listen to music and these were actually recommended by a lot of people

Now that one wasn't what I expected and wasn't as described by the user reviews online I thought I should visit a place with less shilling (I hope)

I mean, I want good headphones, but I don't want to spend €400 on them because I don't have the money. Not sure if this is possible at all though

>>

I'm reading online that the MSR7 isn't very comfortable. Do you own them? What's your experience with that?
>>
>>54507270
>idk, has something to do with importing them I'm sure
I thought the EU was formed specifically to prevent that.

They are like the HD600/650. They have a bit of uncomfortable clamp at first but they get comfortable over time. You can put them around a bunch of books or bend it yourself. I tried that and ended up doing it too much which screwed up the seal and sent them back the first time.
>>

>I thought the EU was formed specifically to prevent that.
You wouldn't believe the price difference between a Mercedes here and one in Germany
Luckily, I can order them off amazon.de for €197

>You wouldn't believe the price difference between a Mercedes here and one in Germany
That's just country specific taxation and like many things within EU not directly related to commerce, this does have a rather considerable effect on it.
>>
>>54505101
Yeah, it kinda is. You'll notice it's a little darker on stax amps. I have a KGSSHV 500V powering my Mk I and I used to own a 727 with feedback mod which is almost the same as a stock 717. KGSSHV wins hands down. But you can always work on building a KGSSHV or a carbon or whatever and take your time with it. No rush. 007MkI on a 717 isn't the best an 007 can do, but it still kills pretty much every other headphone around.
>>
>>54497738
I just got a dt770 80ohm and fiio a3 amp a couple of weeks ago, i'm really happy with the combo so far. I wear em at work for 3-4 hours a day and they're cushy as fuck. Best sounding headphones I've ever had, but then again I've never spent more than $75 for a pair. YMMV I guess but I'm super stoked on my purchase
>>
>>54505101
>have a SRM-717, is it really as hard to drive as people say it is?
You should take any mention about headphones being hard to drive from people with nothing but their gut feel about the subject as a massive grain of salt.
>>
>>54508051
Except the SR-007 is literally hard to drive, by the numbers. KG and spritzer are about as anti-touchy-feely about gut feeling idiocy as you can get.
>>
>>54508090
>Except the SR-007 is literally hard to drive
Because of sensitivity or something else? If low sensitivity, you just need enough voltage or you'll be limited by SPL. I was mostly referring to people's impressions about amplifiers being different sounding here anyway as it's another question entirely.
>>
What's everyone's bit rate and sample rate settings?
>>
>>54508109
It's a stat, not a dynamic. Works totally differently. The impedance is in the hundreds of thousands of ohms. You have a constant bias voltage of 580ish, your power supply running between 300-800 for voltage swing, but anything above about 400 and regulated is fine. Then the big factor is how much current you can push through your output stage.

>>54508116
24/192k just cause. My dac resamples everything to 16/192 anyways.
>>
>>54508116
24/48k

My dac does 24/192, and I ran it that way for awhile. But after watching some sound science stuff on how dac's sample, how sound waves are reproduced and how anything higher than 48k can start to introduce errors, I figured I'll keep it where it's at.

Bit depth is lower noise floor, so while 16bit is plenty good, no harm in going higher there.

The load is very different in scale and type, but that doesn't change the bits about voltage sensitivity or current. That applies to any system, even outside the context of audio.

By electrostatic standards, that it requires more voltage is given by reading the spec sheet.
What makes it so special among other electrostatics?
The capacitance is lower than most of the other Stax, less current is needed for a given slew. The sensitivity at midrange frequencies is average, is it that the response slides downward in the upper frequencies?

My ATH-M50x's arrived today. Pretty new to headphones and stuff so I didn't buy an amp yet. Problem is it works fine on my phone but the audio is super low on my PC. I've checked all the settings I could think of. It's directly plugged into the audio in, my previous headset worked fine on my PC.

receivers aren't good for headphones. Typically they have high noise floor, relatively high distortion, and high output impedance. Though, maybe it isn't so bad on flagship models. They also use a lot of power compared to a regular headphone amp like the o2.

Beyond the magni 2 uber and modi 2 uber, a lot of high end schiit seems shady to me. If you want to spend money beyond that, violectric and benchmark make good stuff.

The part of "can drive *enter any amount* ohms" doesn't make sense. You don't drive Ohms. My phone can drive those Sennheiser headphones just fine too. The impedance is irrelevant on its own, much more useful is to know the sensitivity of the headphones and output power of the amplifier to a load.

I recently got DT880's with a fiio e10k. Upgraded from HD558's. They sound great, although the improvement in quality from HD558->DT880 didn't blow me away like I thought it would. I guess it's to expect, since there's certainly a diminishing return for price/performance. As for comfort, I have quite a large head and HD558's were the perfect size for me (I had them at the largest setting). I especailly prefered the oval earcups. At first, I found the DT880's uncomfortable simply because they were a tiny bit too small, but after like 1 week of use now they feel fine and very comfortable. I guess they just stretched out or something, since now they fit fine. I probably would prefer the fit of the HD600's personally just because of how my head is shaped though. But I got the DT880's 600 ohm for 250$ canadian and the HD600's retail for 440$ canadian. So I'm very happy with my purchase. I was worried about the 600 ohms needing a better amp but my fiio e10k seem to power them just fine. I can also plug them in my nexus 6p and they sound fine, but they don't get super loud.

Also, what do you guys do with long cables? Pic related. I'd like a cleaner way to manage this cable. Kind of annoying that they don't have a detachable cable. Oh well, I guess the way I did it is fine.

I used my EarPods while mowing the lawn and the noise completely drowned out the music. Now I fear that the wind will do the same when I ride my bike. Don't wanna use foam tip earbuds anymore since they really aren't safe(strong isolation).

I plan on buying new ones anyway since these suck. I'm looking for something better, something with which I can hear individual instruments so I can notate what I hear and mix my own things.
I have $50 in my pocket. I was thinking of getting the Sony MDR7506 due to their apparent ubiquity in studios, but I don't feel just in charging a child $30 for used shitphones (Turtle Beach PX22s with markup because of a COD skull printed on the side). I currently own those Turtle Beach headphones.
My cousin keeps borrowing them.
It's annoying and I might as well just sell them to him.
The price for which I will sell them to will be added to the $50 I already have, to buy headphones for myself.
I will use my headphones for notating music and mixing my own.
I am interested in the Sony MDR7506.
The Sony MDR506 cost $80 which is $50+30
I don't feel comfortable charging $30 for the Turtle Beach shitphones
Therefore I am looking for headphones for notating music and mixing my own that cost $50+x where x is a fair price for these shitphones
Am I clear?

Yeah, you are most likelly missing the extra bass, not many bassy options in that price range, maybe you would like the M50X, assuming you could get it for 100 bucks.
V-moda m80 is cheaper and has a pretty similar signature to the m50x, however it's on-ear, so comfort would be compromised.
A good way to comfirm this would be to eq your m40x, hell, you might even like it enough just with eq and not need to replace it at all.

>Thoughts on Sennheiser hd 25 ii ?
That sounds a lot like "What's your opinion on x" and asking "Hey guys, what's your opinion on x?" is frowned upon.

Most posters around here discount on-ears like the HD25-1 II as not being comfortable. I've worn mine for twelve hour international flights without discomfort. Though they might have come off when I fell asleep.

They have a lively sound that really complements rock, EDM, etc. Being light weight and with a split headband they can be very comfortable. They come with velour earpads as well as the standard leather. The velour are more comfortable but they do not seal as well and compromise the isolation factor.

EQ is the only way you'll get accurate sound with headphones. You use it to minimize the coloration caused by the headphones which are all very non-linear regardless of target. Thankfully many headphones are easy to EQ. Very poor ones with limited bandwidth, peakycolored response or high levels of distortion not so much.

>does it actually matter?
In most cases no, not in the slightest. However, there are pros and cons to all kinds of volume adjustment.

Digital volume control effectively reduces the bit depth which is the dynamic range of the signal. The result of lowering the volume in digital domain brings up the noise floor because of quantization error. The standard 16 bit computer audio signal has a dynamic range of roughly 90 dB without dither and close to 120 dB with it. It's more than you need for listening purposes and gives you quite a bit of headroom to control volume in digital domain.

There's also something called noise shaping which is used to change the noise floor to roughly match the equal loudness contour of our hearing thus perceivably lowering the noise floor further. What you need to know is that in most cases the digital bit depth is not the limitation in noise floor in almost any system and worrying about it even in the case if it is makes no difference during listening unless the volume is cut down by an extreme amount.

Some "purists" dislike the idea of digital signal processing and avoid it completely by using a dedicated audio API like WASAPI or ASIO which prevent you from using volume sliders/mixers like the ones found from media players and operating systems.

Analogue volume control directly limits the voltage of the signal with a potentiometer. Full volume means no attenuation and turning the volume all the way down limits the volume by per channel basis when using the common dual gang pot found in most headphone and audio amplifiers. This can cause very noticeable channel imbalance with heavy attenuation where you hear the other channel louder than the other but disappears when volume is turned up. Stepped pots mostly avoid this and well engineered/manufactured pots have negligible levels of channel imbalance even with heavy attenuation. For this reason it is the best to avoid the extreme low end of analog volume adjustment with pots.
