You have a computer. It has 5 drives. The total storage is like 10 TB. You install the object storage software and make it run.
It sizes up the hardware and says, "I have 10 TB of storage. Anyone want to store files? Just give me the name and data. Anyone want to read files? Just give me the name."
So your torrent client wants to store a 10 GB file. Passes it to the software with the file name. This is where the magic happens.
The object storage sees the 5 drives and says "OK, I'm gonna divide the file into 5x2 GB chunks and put one in each drive. I'm also going to calculate some parity data and store that so that if a drive fails, I can recalculate the data from that drive from the parity data."
When the torrent wants to read it, it asks for the data and just gets it. The software manages where the chunks of the file are. We (and the client too) will only see a single root filesystem. Simple. As. Fuck.
Oh we're nearing the storage cap. So we buy 3 more drives and add them all to the computer. What does it do? It rebalances the whole load. It takes all the chunks (of all files) and spreads them all over the new drives, so that the whole system is now faster and easier to recover should drives fail.
It's like the holy grail of storage.
