IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Repeating question from the last thread:

Can I play Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri on my T430 (i5 3320M, no dedicated graphics) without it heating up too much or any other issues?

Also, what is a good use for an expresscard slot?

It's designed to shutdown at 100C, so it's pretty close to being bad, but nothing too damaging.

>Does gaming decrease longevity of laptops?
Everything does. Not noticeably, though.

I'll test Civ 5 now and post accurate temps.

I wanna use my T430 for another 3-4 years at least and don't wanna do anything that makes that impossible. Apparently, my last laptop, an Inspiron with dedicated graphics, died cause of a graphics card related issue.

Thanks for your help m8. I've downloaded Alpha Centauri, so I guess I'll do a test run.

They will probably stay the same.

By the way, gaming not only decreases lifetime of your thinkpad, it also decreases your lifetime as well :^)

T430, cost me $250. Backlit kb, 1600x900 screen. Will add a Samsung Evo next month in place of the DVD-RW.

And this is my first chinkpad too. Fucking love this keyboard.
>>
>>54426592
Why replace your DVD drive? Just get the mSATA variant of the Evo.
>>
>>54426592
Replace the hard drive with the ssd, and put the hard drive in the caddy.
>>
>>54426664
Yeah, that's what I was going to do. I just need to figure out a way to transfer the OS and everything else from the HDD to the SSD, so that I don't have to install everything again. I suppose there must be some kind of software for that, didn't look it up yet.

>>54426615
I was under the impression that the T430 doesn't have an mSATA slot, only the T430s.
>>
>>54426780
You were under the wrong impression. If you want to make sure, just take a look under the keyboard and palm rest.
>>
>>54426780
>I just need to figure out a way to transfer the OS and everything else from the HDD to the SSD
Since you're getting a Samsung SSD, you have a few options.
One is Samsung's own software, that happily clones your HDD to the SSD while you get to use your computer in the meantime.
Another is Clonezilla, which you'll need to boot into with a USB stick so it can clone stuff while it's not in use.

>>
>>54426820

Overwatch right now cause its the beta. Borderlands 2 and HL2DM usually, but just got an eGPU setup for my X230 so gonna be able to expand the gaming library.
>>
>>54426816
Holy shit, you're right. But isn't there any performance loss if I use the mSATA slot instead of the main SATA III?
>>54426806
Awesome, but I might have a little bit of a problem. I've made two partitions of my current HDD and I have stuff installed on both of themn. Unless Clonezilla or some other similar software can make partition-to-partition cloning, I'm screwed.
>>
>>54427038
Fuck it, just clone the whole thing partitions and all to your SSD with Clonezilla. You can delete partitions you don't need on either drive later.
>>
>>54427038
During real use, I'd say mSATA is actually faster.
>>
>>54427103
>>54427115
Thanks for the answers. I just had an idea. Since, after getting and SSD, I wanted to upgrade the HDD to a 1TB one and since I found out that I have an empty mSATA as well, I was thinking that I could do the following:
- instal SSD in mSATA slot
- install 1TB HDD in place of the 320GB HDD
- install the 320GB HDD in place of the DVD-RW and onyl use it to store the paging file.

Did anyone try this? Is there any real benefit to storing your pagefile on a separate HDD?
>>
>>54426829
>anyone knows if a thinkpad w700 that came originally with a core 2 x9100 can be upgraded to a qx9300? or there are some restrictions? lenovo was offering is with that cpu as well, but i couldn't find much about it on the internet.
It can be, yes.
>>
>>54425679
God no. I've had to work on those since my wife's kept breaking.
>>
>>54427235
I would just not bother even having a paging file. If you have enough ram for anything you are going to do it should not be an issue. Also it would be best to check that the msata slot in the t430 is actually sata 3. If its sata 2 you would be better of using a 2.5 inch ssd in the main slot and putting a storage drive in the ultrabay. Then at most get a small msata drive to use as either cache or as the page file storage.
>>
Are x220 and x201 good enough for programming? I am concerned about the 12' screen being too small and needing to upgrade later.

another thing is, since I don't live in us t420, x220/201 refurb/used cost around $300-400 here while a typical i3, 4gb and 500hdd new laptop costs $400, in this case are thinkpads still viable option? Plus I am concerned about quality Here.

Are there any good new laptops that I should pick instead?
>>
>>54427507
Spend a little extra and get a sexy T520 with a 1080 screen, that'll be good with the 1080 screen height, and it has sufficient cooling for a quad core if that turns you on.
>>
>>54427507
It's fine if you use the entire screen
>>
>>54427507
X220 is great for programming if you're okay with small font, since the resolution isn't great. But the performance is perfect.

I am planning to get a replacement screen for my 1600x900 T420, which suffered a Liquid Crystal Catastrophe (literally, was jumped on by a cat)

Primarily I'm looking at the Alienware M14x HD+ panel and have found:

https://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=17719

http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/Dell/ALIENWARE~M14X~R2/ (second from last, matte 16x9)

The first is much more expensive I assume because it includes the "complete hardware," but is this necessary for me if all my original hardware (minus the panel itself, of course) still works?

Is there a better (non-ebay) source for panels?

Hello there /g/uys, I am getting an old x220 next week and since I will receive it without a drive, I am currently deciding on an SSD to get.

1. What's the speed on the mSATA port inside of the x220? Is it worth getting a nice big fast SSD to stick in there or should I save the big monies for the big SATA drive?

2. Anyone got any experience with the Crucial MX200? It has features like encryption and I have read that it's implemented on the chip and not in software, so in theory it should work with any OS right?

Thanks for your help!

Does someone here run Windows 10 on a ThinkPad T420? Does it works well?
Thanks

X220 can go up to 1080p with the IPs mod the T is 768p from images I can't see a huge difference

I did for about 2 months, but eventually went back to 7 mostly because it felt more natural. Didn't have any issues and everything ran well, however the Lenovo Power Manager does not work on windows 10. So you can't set charging thresholds for the battery.
>>
Thinking of getting a T440/s or the 2nd Gen X1 Carbon. They are both around the same price used. The Carbon has a really nice screen and is the only really big difference I see. Which would you pick?

oh and about the botnet meme, is it a meme or is ssd encryption actually botnet alert? earlier today i saw a thread about the samsung ssd denying security updates because the user didn't accept their policy of stealing all the data. are there ssd manufactures that don't do that shit?

None that are well known for it, if they exist. Just make sure you use the TPM and software encryption will suit you best.
>>
>>54432004
what is TPM? i am planning to use the thinkpad with some form of linux, and i'll probably set this up with truecrypt anyway, so should i just forget about the meme and go for the ssd?
>>

The 2nd gen x1carbon has an atrocious keyboard layout(compare it with the 440s), go with 3rd gen if you want a used x1 carbon. Otherwise i'd say go for the 440s and swap the trackpad with the 50 series trackpad
>>

I feel like the keyboard defeats the main purpose of the trackpoint.

I've been an unapologetic Latitude fanboy since I started working in enterprise environments. Sadly, the only relevant Latitude I use is my work computer, the rest are getting quite dated. when I use thinkpad-rotate to rotate the screen left/right (as in portrait mode) on my x220t, the touchscreen gets all fucked up (basically when I touch one part of it, the cursor shows up on the directly mirrored side, like if I touch the top left part of the screen, the cursor shows up in the bottom right).

So on my w520 I turned off the 1000m in the bios, in order to save battery life, however when I did so the max resolution of my display dropped. I have a T5010 and a T531, both are absolutely top-tier machines, but my favorite is the T5010, for its bezelless drawing surface and excellent airflow solution that pulls air from the edges of the machine instead of just the bottom, cooling the CPU as well as the rest of the internal components (the T530 has a similar setup).

So, i imported a X220 Tablet from USA as laptops are taxfree here (its cheaper, as if you buy a new laptop here you need to pay the Omzetbelasting, which is basically VAT) , but the retard post service labelled as tablet so i had to sent them a rant riddled email to correct that shit because tablets and phones are 10% taxed here and i'm not paying that shit.

btw, that shit was supposed to be processed through customs last week but i guess they got lazy because of the koningsdag, workers day and ascension day. (nice holiday combo)

the correct orientation of both touchscreen and wacom digitizer are not set by thinkpad-scripts. you can actually have it set automatically by using either the gnome panel for wacom, or the KWacom for KDE. (though last time i checked, that feature was broken on KDE 5 version of that software)

Recently repurposed a dead T450s into an upscaling server. Turns out a 940m is a decent gpu to upscale with. The machine was "ran over" and ended up getting written off. I doubt the story though as the guy is known to have a temper.
>>

Jesus christ why.
>>
Do the Thinkpad docks transfer power to the laptop itself? or do you have to then run 2 power cables?
>>
>>54441563
Why repurpose or why did the guy rip the thing to pieces?
For the first, I figured why let decent hardware go to waste.
For the second, CSO's tend to get to do whatever they want. The guy has opened numerous tickets saying this or that didn't work on the machine. I'm assuming he went ape shit on it and destroyed it. He didn't hurt the board though, it still works just fine. Display was in five pieces when he gave it to us.

I guess in other eu cuntries there is some tax/customs for pretty much anything that you'd ship from the murrica, isn't it? how come it's tax free in the lowlands, then? isn't there some pretty rigid eu-wide law on this shit?

>(its cheaper, as if you buy a new laptop here you need to pay the Omzetbelasting, which is basically VAT)
also, I don't get you quite clear here: are you saying that only imports of used electronics are taxfreee and you'd have to pay some tax/customs if you were shipping a new laptop from murrica, or are you referring to VAT that local stores are paying?

Looking to get opinions on a new ThinkPad to replace my old L430.

Old specs:
Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50GHz
2x4GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz
500GB HDD
14" HD (1366x768)
~5lb

Necessary specs:
i7
8-16 GB
At least 250GB SSD
At least 1920x1080 resolution, size doesn't matter

>Is WD40 really safe to use

not sure, yet I would use a drop of some low viscosity mineral oil (i.e. hydraulic oil or something, not thick motor oil) right into the bearing instead, or probably no oil whatsoever if the fan bearing is not worn out and just the cleaning is sufficient to make the fan go silent again

"i7" is very open ended between generations and dual or quad core. E.g. between a dual core i5 and i7 in sandy or ivy vag, the difference is small enough to not be worth it
But I guess a T530 or W530 perhaps? You can do the SSD and memory yourself. The upgrade path is fairly apparent
Or toss a coin on something newer

Depends on how big "small" is but at this point the X201 would still be better

In French they call a byte an octet (for 8 bits), hence b is replaced by o.
>>
>>54446163
But you don't translate the name when making the acronym for any other units, so why would that be special?
>>
>>54446224
I don't know, you ask the French.
>>
>>54445195
Chain lube is probably the better option if you don't have any 3N1 or gun cleaning oil (not CLP/breakfree with cleaners in it, just oil).
>>
>>54444973
There is no T560p. I think you're referring to the P50.
>>
>>54444664
I have used WD40, silicone oil, motor oil, silicone tape and vape juice (propylene glycol) as pc fan lubricant.

the vape juice actually worked excellently and has no corrosive properties to plastic unlike WD40 and some mixed silicone lubes. Avoid petroleum distillates, they can weaken plastic.

imo, go to a hobby shop and get a vial of r/c shock oil. it's pure silicone lubricant. The thicker the better.

What's better - x220 or t420 as a uni laptop and after plugging in monitor and common inputs desktop?
>>
>>54446593

T420 would give you a 1600x900 plus your external if you've got on with that, but otherwise they're both fine.
>>
Thinking about buying a "for parts or not working" x220. The only issue seems to be that there is no hard drive but it looks like it boots to bios.

Any issues or you think I could just swap out the cumstained keyboard and put in an SSD and I'll be good?
>>
Gonna need a new laptop soon, always bein a desktop faggot.

Should I buy the new thinkpad x1 carbon?

Ok I just found a barely used 9c battery for the x220 that I am about to buy. Could anyone tell me what sort of battery life I can -> realistically <- expect with that?

The Quadro NVS160M is a goddamn beast. I don't know what reviewers were thinking trying to play UT3 on it when UT2k3 runs beautifully. In fact, anything released before or around '08 plays great on this machine, though GRID and Colin McRae DIRT have too much postprocessing going on. Most newer games are fine too, Euro Truck Sim is a little choppy but totally playable. I said it before, but it seems like the Quadro has better compatibility with older games than Intel video, which may mean I can get Episode 1 Racer to work.

N64 emulation is buttery-smooth, and I can get around 2-3 hours of gaming on the 9-cell while cooking eggs with the exhaust.
>>
>>54447338
No it's at about 90% of the original capacity, it was somewhere around 50 cycles and still has about 85Wh left. How much usetime does your 9c provide?
>>
>>54447373
The Nvidia 9000 series it's based off was a real beast, and they didn't fail on you like the old NVS 140.
>>
If I was going to buy a thinkpad x220 for 150-200$ range and get a ram upgrsde/ GPU- would I be able to play vyida on it as well as do programming projects?

Im looking into a thinkpad for a laptop so I can start programmng and lean what I need in order to make money and enter the super elite hacker world.

But right now, I just also want the laptop to be useful for recreational purposes of hiding my porn in various folders of the system file that wont fuck with its OS.

Joking aside, the think pad sounds great to use I just wana know if this thing can play recent RPGs while I study compsci as im a fresh student and dont know shit about hardware atm.

Thx

Okay /g/. I took the bait and sniped a refurb X220 off Ebay. I'm loving the sturdy feel, compact size, great keyboard and specs. One prob though:

Running Ubuntu 16.04 I'm getting less than 3 hours of battery life. I'm not sure what battery this came with or how long it's been used, but I thought X220 were supposed to have exceptionally good battery life.

I downloaded TLP and typed "sudo start tlp" in terminal, not sure how much of an effect it's having or if I need to do anything else. I'm using the Unity DE if it matters - I know I could get a little more battery switching to a lighter de or wm but not that much right? This is my preferred DE right now and I'd rather not change if it's not imperative.

tldr: New refurbished X220, short battery life. How do I increase the battery life?

Firstly check if your battery is up for recall.

>>54448570
Almost three hrs on a 48% worn batt is impressive, but what >>54448570 said.
>>
>>54448437

I really like the idea of ordering a 9cell for max battery life. However, it would be fatter than the current battery right? Does it perhaps stick out horizontally(parallel to the keyboard) or vertically(downward to the floor) at all more than the stock battery?
>>
>>54444973

Depends on what you mean by worth it, they're nice laptops with good specs and resolution. Their only "fault" is it has the inferior keyboard layout, but if that doesn't bother you whatever. If you can afford one, I say go ahead.
>>
>>54448612
Yeah the tradeoff it the 9 cell bat sicks out a bit.
>>
>>54448612

The x220? It will have a cylinder sticking out the back.
>>
>>54448581

Thank you anons. Now I have tlp and acpi installed, would powertop be in any way redundant? And what about this htop program I've heard about? Can I really gain significantly more battery life by using those applications or are they mainly just informative?

>>54448570
>>54448580

Any recommendations on where to buy the best thinkpad x220 batteries, or which one I should buy?
>>
>>54448667
Powertop is a powerful power usage analyzer, it's not in any way redundant. Good for finding power hungry processes or devices.
htop is the CPU/memory usage analyzer, you probably have it (or definitely top).

Get a genuine battery, on ebay for example.
>>
>>54448667
powertop is just informative, you run it and it tells you estimates of how much power different devices are using.
htop is like plain old top, just a little fancier.

>>54448667

Picked up a T60 for eighty bucks today. Loving how freaking solid this thing feels. Currently running puppy Linux trying to download mint out of the Walmart parking lot on wifi. >I guess in other eu cuntries there is some tax/customs for pretty much anything that you'd ship from the murrica, isn't it? how come it's tax free in the lowlands, then? isn't there some pretty rigid eu-wide law on this shit?

because this is not actually lowlands. im on Curacao, the dutch caribbean, we are part of the kingdom but not part of the EU zone, so we dont follow their economic laws. also the Euro is not used here, we have our own currency, which is pegged to the US Dollar. (Dollars are also widely accepted here)

> only imports of used electronics are taxfreee and you'd have to pay some tax/customs if you were shipping a new laptop from murrica, or are you referring to VAT that local stores are paying?

Im referring to the VAT that local stores charge, thats what the Omzetbelasting is. a VAT.
Imports are either taxed or not taxed depending on the category of the product. by example, phones and clothing are taxed but most computer hardware is not.
