T430, cost me $250. Backlit kb, 1600x900 screen. Will add a Samsung Evo next month in place of the DVD-RW.

Since you're getting a Samsung SSD, you have a few options.
One is Samsung's own software, that happily clones your HDD to the SSD while you get to use your computer in the meantime.
Another is Clonezilla, which you'll need to boot into with a USB stick so it can clone stuff while it's not in use.

Thanks for the answers. I just had an idea. Since, after getting and SSD, I wanted to upgrade the HDD to a 1TB one and since I found out that I have an empty mSATA as well, I was thinking that I could do the following:
- instal SSD in mSATA slot
- install 1TB HDD in place of the 320GB HDD
- install the 320GB HDD in place of the DVD-RW and onyl use it to store the paging file.
Did anyone try this? Is there any real benefit to storing your pagefile on a separate HDD?

I would just not bother even having a paging file. If you have enough ram for anything you are going to do it should not be an issue. Also it would be best to check that the msata slot in the t430 is actually sata 3. If its sata 2 you would be better of using a 2.5 inch ssd in the main slot and putting a storage drive in the ultrabay. Then at most get a small msata drive to use as either cache or as the page file storage.
Are x220 and x201 good enough for programming? I am concerned about the 12' screen being too small and needing to upgrade later.
another thing is, since I don't live in us t420, x220/201 refurb/used cost around $300-400 here while a typical i3, 4gb and 500hdd new laptop costs $400, in this case are thinkpads still viable option? Plus I am concerned about quality Here.

No bios password and computrace disabled, no battery though. The one the seller had installed was a knockoff 9 cell which only lasts around 2 hours so I got him to knock off 40 bucks. Kept the knockoff charger, wonder what he's gonna do with just the shitty battery?

Hello there /g/uys, I am getting an old x220 next week and since I will receive it without a drive, I am currently deciding on an SSD to get.
1. What's the speed on the mSATA port inside of the x220? Is it worth getting a nice big fast SSD to stick in there or should I save the big monies for the big SATA drive?
2. Anyone got any experience with the Crucial MX200? It has features like encryption and I have read that it's implemented on the chip and not in software, so in theory it should work with any OS right?

I did for about 2 months, but eventually went back to 7 mostly because it felt more natural. Didn't have any issues and everything ran well, however the Lenovo Power Manager does not work on windows 10. So you can't set charging thresholds for the battery.
Thinking of getting a T440/s or the 2nd Gen X1 Carbon. They are both around the same price used. The Carbon has a really nice screen and is the only really big difference I see. Which would you pick?

I've been an unapologetic Latitude fanboy since I started working in enterprise environments. Sadly, the only relevant Latitude I use is my work computer, the rest are getting quite dated. when I use thinkpad-rotate to rotate the screen left/right (as in portrait mode) on my x220t, the touchscreen gets all fucked up (basically when I touch one part of it, the cursor shows up on the directly mirrored side, like if I touch the top left part of the screen, the cursor shows up in the bottom right).
How do I fix this?

I have a T5010 and a T531, both are absolutely top-tier machines, but my favorite is the T5010, for its bezelless drawing surface and excellent airflow solution that pulls air from the edges of the machine instead of just the bottom, cooling the CPU as well as the rest of the internal components (the T530 has a similar setup).

So, i imported a X220 Tablet from USA as laptops are taxfree here (its cheaper, as if you buy a new laptop here you need to pay the Omzetbelasting, which is basically VAT) , but the retard post service labelled as tablet so i had to sent them a rant riddled email to correct that shit because tablets and phones are 10% taxed here and i'm not paying that shit.

the correct orientation of both touchscreen and wacom digitizer are not set by thinkpad-scripts. you can actually have it set automatically by using either the gnome panel for wacom, or the KWacom for KDE. (though last time i checked, that feature was broken on KDE 5 version of that software)

I'm getting used to the trackpoint quickly, turning off the trackpad in bios to force myself to use it really helped. Only issue I've got is with scrolling, there doesn't seem to be a way to scroll through pages like with multi point touchpad gestures. Any solutions?

I have used WD40, silicone oil, motor oil, silicone tape and vape juice (propylene glycol) as pc fan lubricant.
the vape juice actually worked excellently and has no corrosive properties to plastic unlike WD40 and some mixed silicone lubes. Avoid petroleum distillates, they can weaken plastic.
imo, go to a hobby shop and get a vial of r/c shock oil. it's pure silicone lubricant. The thicker the better.

The Quadro NVS160M is a goddamn beast. I don't know what reviewers were thinking trying to play UT3 on it when UT2k3 runs beautifully. In fact, anything released before or around '08 plays great on this machine, though GRID and Colin McRae DIRT have too much postprocessing going on. Most newer games are fine too, Euro Truck Sim is a little choppy but totally playable. I said it before, but it seems like the Quadro has better compatibility with older games than Intel video, which may mean I can get Episode 1 Racer to work.
N64 emulation is buttery-smooth, and I can get around 2-3 hours of gaming on the 9-cell while cooking eggs with the exhaust.

Running Ubuntu 16.04 I'm getting less than 3 hours of battery life. I'm not sure what battery this came with or how long it's been used, but I thought X220 were supposed to have exceptionally good battery life.
I downloaded TLP and typed "sudo start tlp" in terminal, not sure how much of an effect it's having or if I need to do anything else. I'm using the Unity DE if it matters - I know I could get a little more battery switching to a lighter de or wm but not that much right? This is my preferred DE right now and I'd rather not change if it's not imperative.

Powertop is a powerful power usage analyzer, it's not in any way redundant. Good for finding power hungry processes or devices.
htop is the CPU/memory usage analyzer, you probably have it (or definitely top).

Picked up a T60 for eighty bucks today. Loving how freaking solid this thing feels. Currently running puppy Linux trying to download mint out of the Walmart parking lot on wifi. Not even sure if it will work though. I tried my Ubuntu 15 boot cd and it gave me some crap about needing an i886 kernel because Ubuntu was trying to compile in amd64. because this is not actually lowlands. im on Curacao, the dutch caribbean, we are part of the kingdom but not part of the EU zone, so we dont follow their economic laws. also the Euro is not used here, we have our own currency, which is pegged to the US Dollar. (Dollars are also widely accepted here)
